Henriques & Henriques Madeira Sercial 10yo 500mLSercial is the driest style of Madeira and this 10-year-old has vibrant acidity. A rich tawny colour with aromas of fruit cake, nuts, dried orange peel and citrus freshness. An initial figgy richness on the palate gives way to notes of fresh citrus, toasted almonds, walnuts and savoury umami notes. Finishes crisp and dry with a delicious salty tang. This type of Madeira won't improve with bottle age, but an open bottle can keep for several months. DECANTER

Diego & Damiano Barale Dolcetto 2021Fruit entirely sourced from the Monforte d'Alba Cru of San Giovanni, which lends the wine a darker element and a touch of the more savoury, ironstone character. They are background notes to the brighter, fresher more gregarious elements that come to the fore. There is weaves of spice, rosehip tea. Primary, approachable and oh so drinkable. This is for consumption not contemplation. Not the wine to open while considering Everettian many worlds interpretation (sorry, continuing a theme from previous offers) but one to drink while listening to a solid play list and cooking something fun. Today the estate is run by two sisters and each as a daughter who is slowly taking over the reins. It's a crazy combination of staunch traditionalism and a modern view on what it means to craft such historically important wines. It is an estate for which we have almost endless admiration, for many reasons not which least is the incredible quality focus they bring to their whole suuite of wines from cru Barolo to this not so humble dolcetto.
If there was ever a wine that could convince you we should be drinking more Dolcetto, then this is it. While Barolo and Barbaresco are the undeniable international stars of Piemonte, Dolcetto is it's heart and soul and a wine that is always on the Piemontese dining table and with examples like this, you can see why. Some dark red cherries and berry fruit are dusted with sweet cake spice and peppery goodness. It's a plush little package is knotted together wonderfully with a firm press of tannin, which sweeps across the palate to clean everything up at the back kept fresh by a jolt of bright acidity. E. Pira Chiara Boschis Dolcetto d'Alba 2023The 2023 Dolcetto D'Alba was scheduled to bottled soon after I tasted it. A youthful purple/magenta color, it was spicy out of barrel, with a lovely lift of cracked pepper, fresh black raspberries, and purple flowers. Considered a favourite amongst Madeira’s winemakers due to it’s ability to balance acidity, sugar and alcohol, at this level Verdelho produces a striking, off-dry wine that can also be served as an aperitif, with tapas dishes or more complex seafood dishes.
