The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is another terrific wine in this range from Piero Busso. Ample and expressive, with terrific depth, the 2019 offers up copious dark red fruit, blood orange and sweet spice tobacco. Firm tannins wrap it all together. Busso bottles two cuvées from his 1.2 hectares of vines in the Albesani cru (the other is the Viti Vecchie offered below). On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that here, “…the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. The vines were planted between 30 and 70 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with an ideal southwest exposure. Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco San Stunet 2019
San Stunet is the only Busso vineyard not in Neive, and instead is in the village of Trieso. Busso farms 1.5 hectares of vines, which sit at 400 metres in altitude on a steep gradient (16%). San Stunet soils are mostly yellow marl with a lot of limestone. The Busso vines lie on the southeast face of the ridge which delivers the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this cru. The site is late ripening, usually picked 10 days after the estate’s other vineyards.
The winemaking is identical to the Albesani Vigna Borgese, but this has both more flesh and is punchier, suggesting both more tannins and acidity. Decant it and serve it in a Burgundy glass and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful Nebbiolo loaded with character (dark cherry, honey, leather), depth and structure. It would ideally get 10 to 15 years bottle age, but if not, then lots of air.

Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco Gallina 2018The 2018 Barbaresco Gallina is the most open-knit and forward of the three 2018 Barbarescos I tasted. Ripeness feels a bit pushed here, but it works nicely within the style of the wine. Super-ripe red cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, orange peel and exotic spice overtones build effortlessly as the Gallina shows off its racy, flamboyant personality. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Purchased in 1999, the domaine farms 1.3 hectares of what is possibly the best-known MGA of Neive (made famous by Bruno Giacosa). Sitting at 240 metres altitude on a low and twisting ridge opposite the Albesani Cru, Busso’s vines are south-west exposed and face the river. It’s a windy microclimate despite not being particularly high. The soil here is the limestone-rich Sant’Agata marl with sandy and calcareous layers. In 2015 Piero began to separate his oldest vines here (planted in the 1950s), for a separate old vine bottling (see below). The vines for this wine were planted between 25 and 50 years ago. Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesanii Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016Very stylish and textural, with a fine-grained structure, dominated by red fruits. Firm tannins back up the nicely textured fruit, which shows great concentration. An intense wine showing such finesse.

Introduced in 2015, Busso’s Gallina Viti Vecchie is drawn from a small parcel of 1953 vines planted in the heart of the Gallina cru. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay (bluish-grey marl), but there is also some sand. Piero Busso describes this wine has having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée. Babo Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Red fruits, and really quite dusty and peppery, along with some floral notes. It’s medium-bodied, tannin has a gentle chew to it, and a whole lot of dusty spice cupboard character, but it’s fresh ,with some cranberry crunch to acidity, and a dry and gently ferrous finish of solid length. The latest wine from Justin Bubb and the Babo team is a Langhe Nebbiolo, sourced from vineyards near the famed town of Castiglione Falletto. The sites mainly face southwest between 300 and 400 metres above sea level. The 2021 vintage came with challenges: spring frosts affected yields, and the summer months were warm, but the fruit quality at the end of the season was fantastic. The fruit was handpicked, destemmed and macerated for about a week with twice-daily pumpovers. Arpepe Grumello Buon Consiglio Riserva 2016Very fine, pure, ultra-mineral expression of Nebbiolo here. Strawberry, raspberry, spice, fennel, mint and stones. You can almost feel an alpine breeze running through your hair as you taste it (that is, assuming you have hair, otherwise maybe around the nape of your neck). There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps. At the moment it feels a little tense, there's a swell of flavours at the fore, but it needs time. Tobacco and balsamic earthy notes balance the berries and dry spices. The Brunate is another super-impressive wine in this range. To be perfectly honest, the Brunate has never been one of my favorite wines here, but the 2019 is undeniably great. Perhaps the combination of parcels Vietti has today explains the multi-dimensional vibrancy that comes through. This is simply magnificent. This cru captures the first and last rays from the sun, hence the name 'inferno.' Heady notes of dried rose petals, dark chocolate and mountain herbs lure you in. The palate unfolds with layers of florals, spiced red cherries and mulch, held together by an architecture of tannins and energy. While its immediacy is undeniable and incredibly tempting this offers great aging potential. GABRIELLE POYPoached strawberry and cherry, aniseed/liquorice root. Juicy liquorice-laced pumice stone and volcanic dusty tannin is terrific, and it's so spicy and long to close. What a specific and terroir driven wine this is. Unlike anything else. Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Castellero 2019The ridge that descends from Bussia, wedged between Cannubi Boschis and Pugnane, terminates in the Castellero MGA. Well known for its more poised style, it doesn't differ here: leafy lightness, dried cherry, bright mint and milky aromas are allied to a graceful, relaxing attack then firm tannins, fierce acidity and a fresh, juicy red currant and pomegranate fruit character. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged in 4,000-litre Klaus Pauscha Slavonian oak. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Brooding and a little exotic on the nose with hints of dark spice. Conterno Fantino Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris 2019The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is another terrific wine from Conterno-Fantino. Crushed flowers, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers and worn-in leather give the 2019 striking aromatic presence. Here, too, Fabio Conterno has done a terrific job in taming the Monforte tannins. The Gris never has the completeness of the other crus, but in 2019 it is positively striking. Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2017Mauro Veglio's property in Paiagallo is at mid-altitude in what is called Vigna San Sebastiano, bordering Terlo, to which it is closer in style than the opposite side of the MGA. Garnet in colour, it has notes of watermelon, earthy strawberry and lemon leaf. Elegance and freshness prevail over the powerful palate. The 2017 Barolo Paiagallo is the most open and racy of Veglio's 2017. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, dried flowers, orange peel and cinnamon all develop as the 2017 opens in the glass. This is an especially ripe, forward Barolo, but it also has a bit better balance in its tannins. ANTONIO GALLONI
In this wine you glimpse the future of the estate. The lack of smaller oak here reveals a more open profile of red fruits, florals and fruit tannins (not oak tannins) which give life and an entirely different shape to the structural profile. The 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo is a proud and exuberant wine that does enormous justice to the vintage and to the mighty Nebbiolo grape. This is remembered as a warm growing season, and this wine is richly layered, generous and beautifully intense as a result. Dark cherry aromas are folded within spice, cured tobacco and leather. In 2011, Scavino bottled a small amount of the 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo, a blend of fruit fruit from a handful of top-notch sites to celebrate the winery's 90th anniversary. A hauntingly beautiful wine, the 2011 graces the palate with notable nuance and detail. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries are all laced together in an exquisite Barolo endowed with real class and pedigree. The Novantesimo is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. That is little wonder. Look at the vineyard sites: Fiasco (Castiglione Falletto), Monvigliero (Verduno), Cannubi and Vignane (Barolo), San Bernardo (Serralunga), Bricco Ambrogio (Roddi) and Rocche dell’Annunziata (La Morra). Lustrous and just mid ruby. Closed and brooding on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Gorgeous and fresh on the palate but very backward and just hinting at red currant and raspberry. The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni DOCG 2019The 2019 Barolo San Giovanni is the more powerful of the estate's two Barolos. It offers up scents of mocha, spice, dark cherry, plum and leather. There's a bit more new oak too, which adds intensity as well as volume. The San Giovanni emerges form the oldest vines on the property, but I have to admit I like the straight Barolo a bit more because of its greater finesse. Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2018Monforte d'Alba. 20 days on the skins.
Concentrated lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and concentrated with fully integrated oak notes adding a spicy edge to the wine. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit on the palate. Generous and youthful with a layer of long, polished tannins. Perhaps the most approachable of their 2018 Barolos, but also has potential to age. WALTER SPELLER
The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about. Dried herbs, iron chalk, white pepper, crushed flowers and mint all grace this inward, brooding Barolo from Veglio. A whole range of savory, earth and mineral notes abound. Heathcote Estate Nebbiolo 2021Convincing nebbiolo. Tannic as all get-up, in a good way. Undergrowth and cherries, pomegranate and tobacco, decayed roses and mint. The Nebbiolo block is off a new section of vineyard established in 2017, and has been organic from the ground up. Picked in mid-April, it was harvested 7 weeks after the shiraz. The fruit was hand picked, hand sorted de-stemmed. Whole berries were transferred to oak fermenation vats for natural fermantation. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to older french oak 500L barrels for maturation. Giovanni Rosso Barolo La Serra 2019Harvest time: middle of October.
The fermentation lasts some 25 days according to the vintage with daily pumping over of the wine mass with délestages at half of the period (fermentation in concrete tanks).
The aging is conducted in 25 or 50hl large barrels of Fontainebleau Forest oak (from 18 to 36 months according to the vintage)
Perfumes: the nose is vivid, powerful and neat; austere at the beginning. Wild berries, coffee, licorice, violet and mint. Good balsamic tones.
Taste: powerful and structured; savoury with clear tannins; very long finish.
