    Blain Gagnard Batard Montrachet 2022
A background hint of wood sets off aromas that include the essence of spiced pear, acacia blossom and an array of spice elements. Here too the big-bodied flavors are succulent and concentrated with evident power that seems to build on the compact, balanced and equally built to age finale. I underscore however that this is presently an almost impenetrable block and I would suggest not touching a bottle for at least five to seven years. BURGHOUND

    Prosper Maufoux Bourgogne Blanc 2023
Notes of baked apples, pink grapefruit and crushed stones lead into a buoyant and vibrant core of white nectarines and young ginger. A gush of nervy acidity excites the palate while a subtle undertow of minerality completes the wine. This is a stonkingly great Bourgogne for the price, you couldn’t ask for much more. GABRIELLE POY

  7. Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2024
    Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2024

The close spaced planting of this part of the Tiers vineyard imparts a slightly different flavour and textural feel to the Chardonnays from the old Tiers plantings. Intense aromas of tropical fruits, brioche and spices. The palate is ripe and textured although the chalky acid and light citrus edge hold the definition and line through to the long finish. Supremely balanced with the oak and fruit integration seamless and refined. Excellent wine. (96) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

Wow! This is something. I know many prefer the Tiers Chardonnay, but for the last two years I have leaned towards this 1.5m and I don't apologise for it. Elegance and purity seep through this wine's veins and I want it all.

Brian Croser describes 2024 as a model vintage and this release is tight and laser-like focused on opening. Concentrated stonefruit lands all the praise early on - the flavour intensity compared to the Tiers Chardonnay is telling and is due to a combination of close-planted vines and different clones. Grapefruit, slivers of almonds and fine drops of lemon juice draw out to a long finish. Baked cheesecake, vanilla pod, a touch of oyster shell and hints of brioche continue to peel back veneers of interest that seem to be brushed on ever so delicately. The precision is elite and the concentration supreme yet its presence is graceful and charming. Give it time to evolve and you'll be rewarded further more. Brilliant stuff. (97) STEVE LESZCYNSKI, QWine Reviews

Pear, grapefruit, green banana, almond biscotti and spice, bread dough and some honey/floral perfume, with just a tiny bit of matchstick. It’s juicy and flavoursome, but tight in acidity, with a distinctly flinty texture, along with a creamy nougat richness, and a tight citrus finish of excellent length. Wonderful wine. 8. Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2024
    Tapanappa Tiers Chardonnay 2024

This has to rank up there with the best of the Tiers Vineyard Chardies yet released. It was an ever so slightly warmer vintage than the previous and this is reflected in the depth and fruit concentration expressed with relative opulence. Lots of nectarine, and cashew with a spicy pear edge to it. The fine chalky acid really holds the tension ensuring a defined and exceptionally long finish. A dry savoury and tight subtle astringency on the finish provides the final flourish to an outstanding wine. (97) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

The vines used for Tiers were planted in 1981, which is pioneering territory for Adelaide Hills. The clone is unknown, though they think it’s related to the cuttings brought in by James Busby in 1832.

There’s a bit of ooomph and weight to this wine, though it’s still clearly ‘fine wine’. Pear, banana, cashew and spice. It’s glossy and slick, but has a good cut of grapefruity acidity to offset, and the finish is long and offers powdery grip to close. A little more generous than some years, I feel, but very good Chardonnay here. GARY WALSH, Wine Front

  9. Fabien Coche Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022
    Fabien Coche Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022
Coming from 7 parcels of beautifully situated vines owned by the estate all within Meursault just below the village. This wine is whole bunch pressed then raised in a 3000 litre foudre before being moved back to stainless steel for 6 months in tank and bottled with no fining or filtration in January after a total of 16 months on lees. This is clearly not an average Bourgogne blanc with weight texture and character way above its humble appellation label. A Bourgogne blanc that delivers freshness and attractive Chardonnay fruit yet is also very complex and fine.

    Girardin Bourgogne Blanc 2022
The grapes for Cuvée Vincent are carefully sourced from select vineyards across Burgundy, including sites in the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Inviting aromas of green apple, pear, lemon zest, and white peach, accented by delicate notes of toasted almonds and wet stone. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with crisp acidity framing flavors of citrus, ripe orchard fruits, and a touch of creaminess. The clean, mineral-driven finish leaves a lasting impression of elegance.

From 60-year-old vines in the south of Meursault just next to Les Perrières. "A fuller yellow and less bright, but not racked or fined yet. The bouquet suggests a bit of freshening up could be in order. That will certainly happen. The fruit in the mouth is quite delicious, with enough concentration, a vigorous apple, just a touch of citrus, and fine length. JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

Girardin Meursault Les Genevrieres 2022 1er

OUSTANDING.  Hints of exotic tea add interesting to the floral, citrus and white fleshed fruit aromas. Here too the mouthfeel of the refined middleweight flavors is super-sleek with equally evident minerality adding a sense of lift to the sneaky long finale that is firm but not especially austere. This isn't as dense as the Charmes but even so, it's still impressive. BURGHOUND

Mid lemon yellow. A faint reduction and a light oxidation, shows the straight from untouched barrel nature of the sample. The oak speaks quite loudly, then there is good acidity behind, and fine length – but not so easy to see at this moment. However, the exceptional length of the finish indicates that when this settles down it will be a classy wine. JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

***** One barrel, not new. A pale primrose with a startlingly fine and pure bouquet. Magical. There is a refined yet exceptionally intense pure fruit, with a saline and citrus touch behind. Ultra stylish and very pure. The finish extends beautifully behind. Bravo! (98) JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

This is also quite floral in character with its spicy white orchard aromas where a hint of citrus confit lurks in the background. On the palate there is a refined and succulent texture to the middleweight flavors that also display focused power on the firm, moderately austere and clearly built-to-age finale where a hint bitter zest slowly surfaces. This is also impressive though at least some patience is strongly advised. BURGHOUND

Two barrels made. A glowing pale lemon and lime colour. Though the barrels are not new they still lend a touch of coconut to this sublimely opulent Montrachet. The riches are properly balanced on the palate though, with waves of perfectly ripe fruit sweeping through the mouth. Some tropical notes, and lower in acidity to taste, thanks to the power of the fruit. (98) JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

    DON'T MISS!
A reticent if discreetly beautiful nose reflects notes of green apple, just sliced citrus, white flowers and a lovely array of spice nuances, especially anise. The highly seductive, even opulent, big-bodied flavors are almost thick thanks to the abundant dry extract that also buffers the powerful, serious and intensely mineral-driven finish where a similar hint of bitter zest appears. This is presently an almost impenetrable block and to my taste this is best purchased with the intent to cellar it for at least a decade. BURGHOUND

  23. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022
Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022
Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. Olivier Morin likes a long slow fermentation forthe whites, using natural yeasts. The reds are vinified without sulphur until after the malolactic fermentation. JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

Textural and elegant Chardonnay from Chitry about 10min South-East of Chablis. Apple and peaches with a delicious vibrant mineral finish; highlighting the Kimmeridgian and Portlandian soils were the vines grow. This is an honest Burgundy wine showing a sense of place and true authenticity.

  25. Nathalie Theulot Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Blanc 2022
Nathalie Theulot Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Blanc 2022
Nathalie Theulot’s Côte Chalonnaise white is usually a domaine bottling drawn from vines in Mercurey. In 2022, hailstorms reduced yields by 60%, meaning this year’s wine includes a measure of purchased grapes. It’s a delicious, pulpy white that wafts from the glass with buttercup, fleshy stone fruit and citrus. The palate is attractively punchy and succulent, its’ satiny texture flecked with stone fruits, rock melon and sweet orange with a nip of reduction tying everything neatly together. The finish is bright and tangy with lingering grapefruit pith and smoky spice flavours. Value-conscious Burgundy hunters will find satisfaction here.

From the Dash Farm's vineyard which is also a single vineyard wine, designate, but here done in a slightly different style.

Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey. Character filled, compelling drinking, a chardonnay not afraid of flavour but happy resting in a space that feels cooler and brighter too. Apple, cashew, almond, pulpy grapefruit, cumquat, cinnamon. Go forth, this is super drinking. (95) MIKE BENNIE, the wine front

  28. Yeringberg Babyberg Marsanne Roussanne 2023
    Yeringberg Babyberg Marsanne Roussanne 2023
Our first Babyberg is a playful and modern take on a Marsanne Roussanne blend, with which
we have a long and proud history. The result is golden yellow/orange in colour with herbal, honeysuckle and orange blossom aromas. The lively, floral palate has a lovely apricot-laden, spicy, roasted nut richness balanced by distinct pithy, chewy phenolics that are reminiscent of fine black tea. SANDRA DE PURY

Golden colour. Honey nut cornflakes, mint, apricot, nashi pear, a bag of white mushrooms. It’s a rich and juicy wine, but also quite nutty and savoury, all the peanuts and smoked ham, quince, quite waxy, but also has this woody grainy grip to it, though I quite like the texture here, and it finishes saline and unami with solid length, and something of an orange and Islay whisky character in the mix. Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2023
There’s so much flavour, detail and complexity within, and yet it feels ethereal and feathery light – a bit of a yin and yang wine in a way. Stone fruit and citrus, especially grapefruit, doused in ginger spice with a refreshing ginger lemon tea, even quinine flavour à la tonic water. Flutters of flinty sulphides, harmonious with exceptional texture via creamy lees, a slip of spicy oak and a finish that stretches to the horizon. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

It starts quietly. With crunchy quince, umami notes of button mushrooms, oat biscuits and gingerbread, and then other aromas start to spill out – lemon curd, lemon tart with meringue, apples, honey coted nuts. Palate delivers texture and juicy acidity with a pink grapefruit and brown lime finish. It’s full of generous fruit with a mist of citrus essential oils, all in place with a good drive showing an interesting personality. Delicious drinking. (94) KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

Bright medium yellow colour with a smoky note on the initial aroma, with nougat, toasted nuts and beeswax, and on the palate, intense lemon/citrus and a hint of honey emerging. It is well concentrated and deep, with brilliant acidity underlining the focused and penetrating fruit flavours. Wonderful chardonnay. (From Main Ridge). (96) Huon Hooke, The Real Review

In pure quality terms this is right up there with the Heytesbury release. It is though a cleaner, purer style, its grapefruit and stonefruit characters bell clear, its creamy mouthfeel so perfectly played and placed. I loved the 20222 release of this wine and I love this 2023 as well. It’s a wine of genuine power, noteworthy finesse and outstanding length. It is, essentially, chardonnay in all its glory. Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2023

"It's the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I'll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. Fine-boned, but delivers just enough flavour. I was so taken by its balance and charm. Superb drinking. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

There would be a lot of wineries who would love to have this as their top chardonnay. But of course, Leeuwin has that little matter of Art Series above it. This really is one of the best and most complete of this line. Seems to have struck a nice balance between the early more opulent styles and some of the later leaner styles. The vintage has helped but the fruit is so pretty with typical cashew, light grapefruit and a little lemon character supported by such exquisitely applied oak. Very good.

    Dormilona Clayface Chardonnay 2023

No oak at all as Clayface is an amphora wine; the fruit is basket pressed to a single Italian amphora. This started out shy on the aromatic front, even if the palate came out textural and seductive. It’s worth decanting so that all the aromas and flavours are revealed: stone fruit, dabs of Meyer lemon and preserved lemon, too. The palate is invigorating, with ginger spice, galangal, and there’s a tanginess offset by a light layer of butter/cream, but oh-so light. It’s complex, energising and different. Yup, minuscule quantities. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Matured in clay amphora from gooder bits of good vineyard in Margaret River.

This has some mojo. Succulent texture with a rub of granitic chew, elements of terracotta and briny savouriness amongst peach, nectarine and cumquat sweet-sour tang. Exotic in a way, but pleasingly so, very even and well balanced in flavours, evocatively perfumed and generally, wildly drinkable. Lots of charm and x-factor here. Keen. Medium-full yellow colour with a smoky struck-flint aroma overlying lemon/citrus fruit, a touch of oak spice, all in balance. The palate is superfine and seamless, elegant and long, with touches of oak and reductive smokiness meeting citrus and stone-fruits, the back-palate swelling into a big finale. A beautiful wine, everything is in its place and the finish seems endless. Very impressive chardonnay. (98) HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

Nectarine, cumquat jelly and rosewater, ginger and cinnamon, hazelnut, chamomile and mint, and while I’ve likely written some outlandish stuff here, in essence, it pretty much just smells and tastes like a very good Chardonnay. It has plenty of flavour, though it’s not heavy, hazelnut and salted pistachio, a subtle cultured butter character, a chalky and stony thing to texture, acidity is cool and fine, green mango and ripe lemon closes out a finish of excellent length. It has a certain X factor that pushes it up to 96 points for me. Outstanding. GARY WALSH, thewinefront.com

This is from a vineyard planted in 1990, and it seems all the wines from 2024 are made the same way. 30% new oak. Full malo. And that’s a nice thing to do.

Lemon and ginger, lemongrass, almond, a little oyster shell salinity. It’s a tight and frisky wine, lots of zip and energy, maybe a little too much sour green apple and bony texture, some chamomile mouth-perfume, lemon peel, lime and licking a 9V battery zip with a dash of Angostura bitters on a finish of good length. Almost a Riesling character to this wine. I like it... GARY WALSH, thewinefront.com

Light-medium yellow colour; apricot and peach aromas, laced with subtle nuttiness; the palate is intense, medium bodied and rich, the richness and alcohol warmth growing towards the back-palate, ending in a long tail with a slight grip. HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

Domaine Pattes Loup Vent d'Ange AC Chablis 2020

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - Much more airy - almost vertical - perfumed and showing beautiful definition. A wine with more structure - extra breadth - cushioned intensity. A beauty. BILL NANSON

The 2020 Chablis Vent d'Ange has a light bouquet with lemon verbena, and citrus peel touches, just slightly smudged at first but gaining clarity with aeration. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly reduced entry, fine depth, plenty of extract, and a saline finish. Just a hint of blackcurrant leaf on the finish. Fine. NEAL MARTIN

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - Hmm that's direct, fine fruited - what an invitation. Wide, vibrant - almost as incisive as the 20s but with a little extra ripeness to the fruit. Just in bottle a month - that's a simply great 2019 villages! BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

Creamy, ample and layered, it is a fabulous introduction to these wines. Lemon confit, mint, apricot and sweet floral notes are all laced together in a Chablis of total nuance and class. Rich and oily on the palate with superb textural intensity, it is a real winner. Ageing in steel keeps the flavours bright. What a wine. All of the wines in this range are terrific, but I would be tempted to go for the straight Chablis. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The 2018 Chablis Vent d'Ange AOC was the only Thomas Pico bottling that I could include in this report -but what a great Chablis AOC it is, possible the best you will find! Displaying wonderful focus and precision on the nose, this is intense and mineral-driven. Captivating! The palate is poised and full of energy and tension, achieving Premier Cru quality, with fantastic salinity on the finish. Pico at his best. Bravo! ANTONIO GALLONI

  43. Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay 2022
    Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay 2022

It has all the hallmarks of the site – Block 2, off Stevens Road, obviously, all Gingin clone, whole-bunch pressed to French oak, wild fermentation. And while there’s lees stirring throughout its nine months in barrel, there’s no mlf. It’s still a little frisky from youth as the acidity holds sway, yet in-between pink grapefruit and lime juice, zest and pith, too. There’s some depth and texture via lees input and the oak, yet all well placed and adding extra dimensions to this enjoyable wine. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Some years I prefer Stevens, and in others, the Reserve. This year, Mr Stevens takes the tray.

Has a slight struck match character, along with lime, grapefruit, white peach, some fennel, light spice and almond nougat. Medium-bodied, lively acidity with plenty of fine flinty texture, green olive , a little parmesan rind, citrus, white peach, and again that lovely almond gloss to temper the wine. Finish is lively and long. Balance between freshness and flavour is excellent here. Lovely wine. (95) GARY WALKSH, The Wine Front

L.A.S. Vino Barrels of Metricup Chardonnay 2023
The 2023 Barrels of Metricup Chardonnay leads with pineapple and pressed linen, yellow peach and Pink Lady apples. In the mouth, the wine is rich and full, loaded with opulent fruit and exotic spice. Everything is kept in check, and there is a long spool of flavour through the finish. For a mild, long year, this is concentrated, powerful and ripe. It's really good."

    Domaine Goisot Bourgogne Aligote 2022

OUTSTANDING - A ripe yet very aligoté nose offers up mostly notes of citrus confit and spice. There is fine mid-palate density to the delicious and lightly stony flavors that deliver fine length on the bone-dry and highly refreshing finale. This is a lovely example of the genre and worth a look. BURGHOUND

Very aromatic, some nice width to these aromas too. Juicy, easy, open, faintly saline accents in this complexity - just a modest suggestion of reduction in these flavours but it's a very drinkable, indeed delicious wine… BILL NANSON
