STAFF PICKS 2025 - ALLICIA RAE (WSET)

My family and I recently had this wine at my dad's 70th birthday lunch at Hogget Kitchen (Owned by Patrick Sullivan and William Downie). We liked it so much, we ordered a second bottle…and I'm still thinking about it! I think it will be making a reappearance for Christmas. For me, this was the perfect blend of fruit, oak, lees and malo. To paraphrase Goldilocks; not too lean, not too oaky, but just right. ALLICIA

This is from a vineyard planted in 1990, and it seems all the wines from 2024 are made the same way. 30% new oak. Full malo. And that’s a nice thing to do.

Lemon and ginger, lemongrass, almond, a little oyster shell salinity. It’s a tight and frisky wine, lots of zip and energy, maybe a little too much sour green apple and bony texture, some chamomile mouth-perfume, lemon peel, lime and licking a 9V battery zip with a dash of Angostura bitters on a finish of good length. Almost a Riesling character to this wine. I like it... GARY WALSH, thewinefront.com

Light-medium yellow colour; apricot and peach aromas, laced with subtle nuttiness; the palate is intense, medium bodied and rich, the richness and alcohol warmth growing towards the back-palate, ending in a long tail with a slight grip. HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com
