  3. Louis Michel Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er
Louis Michel Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - More airy but with depth of aroma too. Extra wide - panoramic - the mineral stature of the last, perhaps faintly more incisive. It's a wine I'd wait longer to open - maybe 3 years to start with - but it's also a great wine. BILL NANSON

OUTSTANDING - A more elegant, airier and more floral-suffused nose combines notes of spiced pear and enough Chablis elements to be more than just interesting. The refined, delicious and caressing, if not quite as concentrated, middle weight flavors possess very good punch on the firm, balanced, moderately dry bitter lemon-inflected finish. This markedly stony, linear and chiseled effort is also quite good and worth considering. BURGHOUND

The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with touches of frangipane infusing the citrus fruit and hints of dried orange peel coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy-textured opening. Good delineation, quite saline, with a twist of sour lemon dovetailing into a slight nutty/smoky note on the finish. One of the finest Premier Crus from Louis Michel. NEAL MARTIN

  5. Genot Boulanger Meursault Clos du Cromin 2021
Genot Boulanger Meursault Clos du Cromin 2021

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - 1.5 ha – the part closest to Meursault village – plenty of clay but the limestone is quickly found below. Hmm, spiced, deeply aromatic – partly due to some noble reduction. Broad, vibrant wine – faintly tannic, spiced, classic Meursault – bravo! BILL NANSON

Fruit aromas range from citrus peel to apricot with accents of butter and spice. The texture is rich, but the body is balanced by the racy acidity of the 2021 vintage. This wine will drink well on release but is undoubtedly suited to at least mid-term cellaring. The village-level vines of this lieu-dit are at the base of the slope just outside the town of Meursault; the domaine farms 1.5 hectares here to produce this delicious certified-organic wine. 6. Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons 2021
Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons 2021

Broader, more incisive, still with a little noble reduction. Cool fruit, calmer than the first impression of the Cromin but similarly juicy in the middle and finishing flavours – a hint more austerity – citrus skin bitters – in this finish so I’d wait a little longer to open but an excellent wine with fine intensity. BILL NANSON

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons, which was not affected by frost and consequently bestowed a generous 50hl/ha, has a minerally bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with touches of wet limestone and struck match. The palate is well balanced with a spicy opening, fine depth and a keen thread of acidity; a sprinkling of white pepper appears towards the finish. NEAL MARTIN

  7. Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes 2021
Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes 2021

This nose is narrower than the Levrons – but deep and again with that faint noble reduction the top notes more spiced. More incisive to start – a bit more energy on dsplay here too – a more herbed complexity that mixes with heavier citrus notes – impressive and also for keeping a little while, also a little tannin on the end of my tongue! BILL NANSON

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes has a little more delineation and vigour on the nose compared to the Levrons with menthol-tinged citrus fruit, lime and crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with a little more "bite" than the Levrons, modest depth with a nicely detailed, Meursault-like finish. Fine. NEAL MARTIN

  8. Genot Boulanger Chassagne-Montrachet Cru Les Vergers 2021 1er
Genot Boulanger Chassagne-Montrachet Cru Les Vergers 2021 1er

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - 2 parcels here; one in the Clos st Marc. Broader more generous aromatics – very inviting with a hint of sweetness but nothing exotic. Mouth-filling, melting, open – almost fluid in style – just a beautiful shape and mouth-watering style – a bottle of this wouldn’t last very long on my table – bravo! BILL NANSON

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a pure and perfumed bouquet with yellow fruit, marzipan and light almond scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a touch of white pepper and orange rind mixed with tropical notes towards the finish - peach and passion fruit. NEAL MARTIN

  9. Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Chardonnay Cuvee Reserve 2022
Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Chardonnay Cuvee Reserve 2022
The entry-level white Burgundy comes from old-vine parcels in the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The vines have an average age of 48 years and, as with all the wines, harvesting is done by hand. For this cuvée, about half is vinified in stainless steel and half in used oak barrels. This gives a nice balance of fresh fruit with a light touch of oak.

  11. Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022
Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022

From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.

In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.

Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

  13. Vouette et Sorbee Blanc dArgile Brut Nature R20
Vouette et Sorbee Blanc dArgile Brut Nature R20

It's a super mineral, nutty wine with crunchy stone fruits. There is lovely, pulpy fruit but also racy, crunchy acidity and terrific length with a twist of pleasant astringency. It takes you (the 60 miles) to grand cru Chablis and back again. ROB WALTERS, importer

    Review on a previous release
Proving superior Blanc de Blancs is quite possible in the Aube's Pinot Noir paradise, this opens with lemon cream and persistent white chocolate and nougat through the palate. Details of white flowers, peach and almond. Very gourmand and complex, and quite a counterpoint to the more austere Chardonnay Champagnes from further north. 100% Chardonnay. Single parcel. Oak fermented. TIM HALL, decanter.com

  14. Peay Vineyards West Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2022
Peay Vineyards West Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2022
The 2022 Chardonnay (West Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, mint, tangerine peel and a kiss of French oak all grace this tasty Chardonnay. Time in the glass releases some of the wine's textural intensity.ANTONIO GALLONI

The 2022 Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast sports a bright yellow/straw hue and is expressive on opening with notes of pear, white flowers, orange blossom, and fresh hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied, it reveals a nice linear feel, but it has a lovely, high-quality carriage of citrus oils (lime) and a long, great, mouthwatering finish. Drink this over the next 10 years. 17. Eleni et Edouard Vocoret Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2022
Eleni et Edouard Vocoret Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2022
The 2022 Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot underwent partial tressage in the vineyard this year, so the Vocorets could compare. They found the fruit ripened earlier with more intense aromas. These will be bottled separately. It has a lovely peachy, nectarine-tinged bouquet that blossoms in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with touches of grapefruit and white peach. It is very elegant and pure, with a touch of spice towards the finish. Simply a mouthwatering prospect - difficult to believe this is not a Premier Cru. NEAL MARTIN

TOP VALUE - This also displays an ample amount of mineral reduction on the aromas of brine, algae and white orchard fruit. There is even better density to the sappy and palate soaking medium-bodied flavors that also flash focused power on the stony, moderately austere and beautifully persistent finale. This is also excellent. BURGHOUND

De Bortoli PHI Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021
From the Lusatia Park vineyard at Woori Yallock, purchased by De Bortoli family in 2016. Whole-bunch pressed, barrel fermented and matured for 9 months in both new and used French oak casks. Bright green gold. Restrained with good fruit purity. Yellow pear, white nectarines and a hint of jasmine, the palate is a happy mix of being both textured and refreshing. A very even wine that finished long with some green apple crunch. PHILIP RICH, wine companion

  20. Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
    Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023

From the Full Moon Vineyard in Gladysdale. Wild ferment and 100% mlf. There's only one wine from winemakers and friends Steve Flamsteed and Dave Mackintosh, and it's always a good 'un. A bright green gold. There's aromas of ripe stone fruits together with some savoury and complex briny notes. On the palate, this has lots of flavour and punch, finishing long with a refreshing touch of grip. Delicious now and over the next 4–6 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.

A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Classy, understated and delicious. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Fron

    ON THE 2023

This is fresh, crunchy and clean, with mineral and spice notes and plenty of salty undertones. Sliced lemons and apples. Medium-bodied with a fresh finish. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

The Brajkovichs remain firmly on top when it comes to New Zealand Chardonnay, finding another gear over the last decade as the competition around them heats up. They are undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest white wine producer and have set a blistering pace for the variety over the last four decades.

Yes, this small family winery that's sandwiched between a winding river and a busy highway is  a world beater. Collectors from the across the world are eager to snap up their wares upon release. Pulling off the highway just beyond the outskirts of Auckland and stepping through the lemon-yellow archway that leads into the tasting room it all seems a bit impossible. Maybe better suited to a few souvenirs, tea and scones perhaps? Then you taste the wines.

  23. William Fevre Chablis 2022
    William Fevre Chablis 2022

FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. Drink from 2025-2030 JASPER MORRIS MW

TOP VALUE - There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit. There is also slightly better volume and richness to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a refreshing, clean, dry and sleek finale. This is very good for its level plus it should reward a few years of keeping if desired. BURGHOUND

Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age. DECANTER

    Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Chardonnay 2023
Before I tell you that Bruce Dukes' career has spanned over 3 decades and that he's had years of experience both locally and abroad, it's likely a good idea to start at the finish: Bruce Dukes is wholly talented, and while he makes high-quality acclaimed wines for his own estate - Domaine Naturaliste - he also does this for a raft of other, smaller producers in Margaret River and Geographe. His winemaking style is one of fresh, pure fruit over obvious or intrusive winemaking artifact, and the wines routinely possess a polish and eminent drinkability. ERIN LARKIN

Aromas of crushed stones, lemon peel, sliced pink grapefruit and subtle ground spice. Medium-bodied with a lot of pleasant white tea character. Jasmine and leafy herbs come through. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Tasting with Bruce is a pretty remarkable experience. The guy knows his business and he knows he is getting things done, better than most. He is a crazy character though. You have to strap in and get ready for the ride. He runs from jovial and humorous through to intense and stern. Kind of like his wines. Some of them are driven, intense and focused things, some are a little more uplifting and joyous. This one definitely sits somewhere in the middle and we love it!

Named for Hamish David Walsh, and as it happens, my brother is David Arthur Walsh. A blend of Burnside Chardonnay (raised in anfora) and Osmington (three year old oak).

Well, this is a wild one for sure. It’s kind of sweaty and clove spiced, oyster shell, white mushroom, lime and cape gooseberry. It’s saline and savoury, powdery and dusty in texture, some cashew cream in the mix, with a curry leaf finish of good length. It’s kind of dirty, and yet, I find it strangely compelling. Fantastic intensity of flavour matched to fantastic length. This is a chardonnay for lovers of chardonnay. There's cedarwood oak in play, and a kind of nutty-creaminess too, but it's the blaze of pear, white peach, grapefruit and steel that really woos. Citrussy acidity teams with the pear characters to give the wine an air of juicy refreshment, but everything is in the context of flavour, bold and delicious. An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 25% mlf. A very bright green gold. Attractive scents of ripe white pears and nectarines, lemon curd and just the right amount of flint. Packs a punch on the saline, gently textured, gently chewy palate. Great stuff and the perfect entrée to the year's superb lineup of single-vineyard chardonnays. (95) PHILIP RICH, wine companion

Honeycrisp apple skin, lemon zest and green plum. Winter melon and starfruit. Plumes of talc powder, pomice and honeysuckle. Plenty of white delicate florals and a blush of nectarine. Intoxicating acidity and a kefir creaminess on the finish. A spray of saline and oak appears in its round shapes rather than toasty notes. Alive with energy and creeping unsuspecting power. Drinking well now and will cellar 3-5 years, a great wine for the bite of calamari or richness of abalone. (95) SHANTEH WALE, wine pilot

This is also aromatically cool and almost as reticent with its airy aromas of white pepper, mineral reduction, essence of pear and a suggestion of wood influence. Then there's a twist of finishing intensity - you can sense a little oak today - average 5-year-old barrels - a mix of 228s and 350s. Wait 2 years and the oak will be gone - that's a great wine. 40. William Fevre Chablis Fourchaume 2022 1er
William Fevre Chablis Fourchaume 2022 1er
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - The classic, almost fizz of golden-yellow citrus - very inviting. Really vibrant in the mouth - such energy. A wine that directs you into its vibrant finish but holds you there with super length. Ultra classy, possibly a great Fourchaume! BILL NANSON

The domaine's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume, a parcel selection in Vaulorent, opens in the glass with notes of sweet citrus fruit, white flowers and oyster shell, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy palate that's cool and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. William Fevre Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er

FIVE STARS - From multiple plots: east facing kimmeridgian marl in Pied d'Aloue (0.50ha), one hectare in Chapelot, (more soil here, fatter wine), then the rest in Bréchain, where vines dating back to 1936, give tension. What a beautiful bouquet. This has the sensual aspect of a delightful sunny summer, yet with an entrancing freshness behind. This is quintessential right bank (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

SWEET SPOT - An elegant, pure and wonderfully airy nose more freely reflects its aromas of white flowers, prominent mineral reduction and plenty of seashore elements. There is at once more volume but, somewhat surprisingly, even better refinement to the medium weight plus flavors that retain excellent detail while also flashing an almost pungent stoniness on the driving, firm and impeccably well-balanced finale. One to look for as this is very impressive. BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - Deep, wide - structural wine, less of the fruit - a great invitation. A more direct wine of citrus energy, chalky almost. Less large vs the Fourchaume but more in all other directions - beautiful, saline finishing wine. Yes! BILL NANSON

William Fevre Chablis Vaulorent 2022 1er

SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING - A much less expressive nose, indeed it is all but mute, requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus blossom and seawater. The richer and slightly more powerful flavors also possess a sophisticated mouthfeel along with excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. In a word, terrific. BURGHOUND

Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. (96) ANDY HOWARD MW, Decanter

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, a cuvée where Didier Séguier permits himself the the luxury of using only Fèvre's best old-vine parcels and which is always one of the high points of the range. Wafting from the glass with notes of citrus oil, oyster liquor, white flowers and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. (95) WILLIAM KELLEY

The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montée de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - A wonderful, more vertical nose - what depth and minerality at the base. Extra CO2 here today. More overtly mineral, none of the golden fruit of the Fourchaume - really alive and energetic wine - and I love it - bravo! BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

More lime than lemon in colour, the nose is so stylish yet with obvious concentration beneath. I love the texture of this wine, which has taken on a little bit of the cashmere qualities of this sector, while nonetheless retaining its mineral core. Very stylish once again. (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 2022

DON'T MISS - A toasty nose features notes of smoky grilled shellfish, pear and algae. The dense and equally serious larger-scaled flavors don't have quite the same power yet they are clearly more refined on the markedly bitter citrus zest finish that displays outstanding length. This is exceptionally classy and while it too could use more depth, that is all but assured if given a chance. BURGHOUND

Open, almost delicate aromatics. Supple, concentrated - but with a large growth of great flavour, lots of salinity, ultra complex and large finishing. This is a baby, I think there's much more to come. BILL NANSON

William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots 2022

FIVE STARS - A glowing pale lemon and lime. Sunny and fresh at the same time, with an extraordinary tension on the nose. Still a wine of discretion, Didier has made wines which completely avoid heaviness while still delivering all that is necessary in concentration and backbone. Sublime persistence. (97) JASPER MORRIS MW

DON'T MISS - This is the coolest and most restrained of this group of 2022s with its elegant aromas of prominent mineral reduction, lemon-lime, spice and oyster shell. There is almost painful intensity to the intensely stony and strikingly well-detailed larger-bodied yet still beautifully refined flavors that display huge length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Preuses, this is very classy and built to repay extended keeping. BURGHOUND

William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2022

FIVE STARS - Mostly from old vines, a good half planted between 1948 and 1952. Translucent lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is not ready to unfurl yet there is a sense of sublime purity about the nose. A wine in perfect harmony on its wide bench of white fruit. Just a little touch of spice behind, good acidity. Sign up for this! (98) JASPER MORRIS MW

DON'T MISS - This is aromatically quite similar to the Côte Bouguerots but with more floral influence. The rich, big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors are also seemingly chiseled from Kimmeridgian, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent, very dry, balanced and stony finale. This is also extremely impressive and equally built to repay extended cellaring. BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - mainly planted before 1950 by that father of William Fevre. Always the only wine in this - or pretty much any line-up of great Chablis that makes me think - Chevalier-Montrachet! A more alive and zesty aromatic from this - almost 2021 in style. Plenty of gas you must wait for it to fade. Here's a wine with (almost!) the density of Preuses but the fluidity of the Bouguerots. A haunting finish that holds impressive intensity. Properly grand and still far from the finished article - Grand Vin for sure! BILL NANSON

  46. Delamotte Blanc de Blanc 2018
    Delamotte Blanc de Blanc 2018
The 2018 Brut Blanc de Blancs is a blend of fruit from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, six villages in the Côte des Blancs. Crushed rocks, mint, slate, lemon peel and green pear lend notable freshness. Like most wines in this vintage, the Blanc de Blancs is airy and medium-bodied in structure, but it shows lovely tension and fine balance. There's plenty of Delamotte class, in an understated style. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The Delamotte 2018 Blanc de Blancs is showing well today, evoking a gourmand, complex bouquet of pastry, almonds, ripe orchard fruits, spices and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and chiseled, it’s enveloping and round with a fleshy core of fruit, though not as fleshy as the 2012, concluding with a tense and long finish. 47. Louis Michel Chablis 2023
    Louis Michel Chablis 2023

The quite strict 2023 Chablis Village offers Granny Smith and orange rind on the nose, with light mango scents emerging with aeration. The palate is taut and fresh with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish. Drink over 4-5 years. NEAL MARTIN, Vinous

The grapes come from eight different areas, which are mainly located on the left bank of the Serein river, Pargues in the Forêts valley, and Vaillons. They are blended with the parcel located just below the Montée de Tonnerre, to create this authentic Chablis. No added yeast, long fermentation using indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled vats. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

Matured for 6 to 10 months. In stainless steel tanks, with the least possible handling. Long moderately cold stabilisation. Fining using bentonite if necessary. The wine is gently filtered once before bottling

  48. Mac Forbes Little Yarra 'Gladysdale' Chardonnay 2021
Mac Forbes Little Yarra 'Gladysdale' Chardonnay 2021

From a vineyard planted in Gladysdale in '09. Matured in seasoned barriques. My pick of the '21 single-vineyard chardonnays, this has a complex bouquet of just-picked nectarines, white flowers and oyster shells. The palate is nicely balanced, with good weight and concentration. It's also chalky textured, saline and long. And, like Mac Forbes' single-vineyard wines, in particular, it's been built to last. (96) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Petite Yarra. AOC? Clay with mudstone and dry-farmed vines.

It glides. With a silky texture, lightly yoghurty core and a chalky, citrusy finish. Quite light on its feet with blanched almonds, crisp green apple, just a hint of crunchy white nectarine as it’s mostly citrus driven. All fresh, smooth and minerally. She’s pretty.
