Lilbert Fils Extra Brut
STAFF PICKS 2024 - ALEX WILCOX
The Prince Wine Store team uncovered the Lilbert on a recent trip to France and we were very lucky to be given a small allocation for Australia. This tiny producer (3.5 hectare) is a great addition to our Champagne portfolio. For me this is what champagne is all about - pure fine and elegant with an underlying power - this is truly an anywhere, anytime great bottle of Champagne. If you haven't tried it, you really should.
Bertrand Lilbert's crafts his wines from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Northern part of the Cote du Blanc, the NV is a blend of 50% reserve wine and 50% from 2016 for this most recent bottling. As small grower Champagne prices continue to skyrocket this cuvee is great value for money and will stand up against many bigger name Blanc du Blanc. Elsewhere, these wines have a cult like following, something we hope to help build here. This will be a feature of my Christmas Day in Tamworth. ALEX WILCOX
Lilbert-Fils is a small, slightly under-the-radar grower in Cramant with a loyal following, and it's easy to see why. With 50% of the blend for the first wine of the house coming from a perpetual reserve of Cramant Chardonnay started in the 1990s by Bertrand Lilbert's father, this is an entry level that is anything but simple and youthful. The style is rather floral, with apricot and jasmine notes floating over a real hit of savour from the reserve and a bone dry, mineral presence. It's singular, yet harmonious; a blanc de blancs that takes care of the simple pleasures, yet hides rather a lot under the bonnet. TOM HEWSON, decanter.comNote on previous release:
As is consistently the case with this wine, the nose is airy and almost delicate with its softly yeasty aromas of Granny Smith apples, lemon-lime and a floral top note. The ultra-fine if firm mousse contributes to the impression of refinement on the equally pure middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean, dry and delicious but not really austere finale…BURGHOUNDNVchardonnayFrance376$125.00 As low as $112.50 -
Lilbert Fils Blanc de Blancs PerleThe NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Perle Grand Cru is fabulous. A Champagne of uncanny depth and intensity, the Perle is quite structured in this release. White pepper, flowers, crushed rock, mint and lemon peel abound. More than anything else, I am struck by the wines. ANTONIO GALLONI
A lower-pressure cuvée originally inspired by Mumm's erstwhile Crémant de Cramant, it offers up attractive aromas of yellow orchard fruit, sweet citrus, hazelnuts, buttery pastry and flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming palate that's suave and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. WILLIAM KELLEY, wineadvocate.com
Bertrand Lilbert's wines have long been insider favourites, particularly the intensely characterful, clean-cut and aromatic Cramant Chardonnay, and the Perle - which follows a tradition in the village of reducing the pressure of the mousse by one third to give finer, creamier bubbles. This hits a sweet spot with its pear, apricot juice and citrus oil intensity, fragrant with jasmine-like florals and rounded out by a third of the blend coming from a perpetual reserve system… TOM HEWSON, decanter.com

Albino Rocca Barbera d'Alba Superiore Gepin 2020
The 2020 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Gepin is deep, flavorful with tons of character. It emerges from the Cottà cru, where the wines are naturally rich and creamy. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and incense all open nicely. A year of aging in cask adds structure. What I like most about the 2020 is the combination of fruit intensity and depth, but in the restrained, classic style that is the norm here these days. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
The name of this wine is taken from the previous farmer. Gepin tended these old parcels of Barbera in the great crus of Ronchi (Barbaresco) and Cottà (Neive), planted between 1950 and 1974.This wine has improved out of sight in recent vintages (in part thanks to enhanced barrel integration) and has now become a regular in our portfolio. Where the classic Barbera is raised in tank, the Gepin matures for 12 months in low-impact, large Austrian casks (from you know who) and is bottled unfiltered

Jaeger Defaix Rully Blanc 1er Cru Le Cloux 2022Here the wood treatment is more subtle on the very pretty and more floral-suffused nose of citrus, anise and white orchard fruit scents. There is a finer texture to the punchier medium weight flavors that culminate in a bone-dry, balanced and even more persistent finale. The underlying tension is palpable and overall, this chiseled effort is very good and a wine that should amply repay mid-term keeping. Jaeger Defaix Rully 1er Cru Rabource blanc 2022A subtle but not imperceptible application of wood sets off the cool and airy blend of white orchard fruit, citrus confit and a hint of crushed anise. Conterno Fantino Barbera d'Alba Vignota 2021The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Vignota is a tasty entry-level offering. Cristom Eola Amity Hills Chardonnay 2022
From eight different sites in the Eola Amity Hills, winemaker Daniel Estrin learned how to make Chardonnay from Litorrai's Ted Lemon. Paul Gerrie makes up the bulk of this wine with Eileen and Louise. 100% barrel fermented Estrin uses a tactile approach to the lees inclusion in this wine. At the entry-level, this wine is still over-vintaged, which builds tension in the wine. Notes of tarragon and chipped flint frame the smoky grilled lemon aromatics. Stony flint streaks introduce the palate, green mangoes, and grilled lemon peel. Delicious and a tad unbelievable as their entry-level bottling. CLIVE PURSEHOUSE, Decanter
The 2022 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills is a total pleasure on the nose, wafting up with notions of sweet spice, chamomile and ginger-tinged yellow apples. Round and supple, this possesses a core of juicy acidity that enlivens it's tart orchard fruits as a salty sensation forms toward the close. It tapers off with tension, cleansing and fresh, leaving a mineral twang and hints of sour citrus. Beautiful. ERIC GUIDO
A bright medium yellow hue, the 2022 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills is elegant, with a juicy, decadent feel to its notes of sweet oak spice, delicate, floral perfume, wet stone, and fresh white peach. Refreshing and mouthwatering, it’s medium-bodied and crisp, with good ripeness of acidity and a clean, elegant finish. It’s going to age well over the coming 6-8 years. JEB DUNNUCK

Nuanced behind the concentration. Ripe orchard fruit, with underlying citrus, clean and mineral with weight and length. I love the crystalline finish. JASPER MORRIS MW
A higher-toned perfume – a little more chalky freshness. Extra fresh, extra mineral in the mouth. A subtle tannin and then an extra depth of finishing flavour. A faint, positive green accent only in the finish of this wine today. Super wine BILL NANSON

Goisot Blanc Saint-Bris La Ronce Blanc 2020
FIVE STARS - A pale colour with some lime tints. Fresh apricot and pineapple but not disagreeably tropical. If you could have pineapple blossom it would be that. The most powerful fruit of all on the palate and with that delicious light bitterness at the back that assures longevity. Just like its pinot friend. Keeps coming back. Splendid! JASPER MORRIS MW
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - As fresh as the Corps de Garde but with more width in the deeper, riper, fruit notes. Ultra-mineral, cushioned by the fine fruit, always mouth-watering – almost juicy in this case. Intense finishing great wine – bravo. BILL NANSON

Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet 2022
OUTSTANDING - Cool but ripe aromas include those of mostly apple and acacia blossom along with an interesting hint of tangerine peel. There is solid size, weight and mid-palate density to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that easily buffers the moderately firm acid spine shaping the youthfully austere yet sneaky long finale. BURGHOUND
FIVE STARS - François is fortunate enough to have 5.85 hectares of Puligny-Montrachet from six plots. He is planning some parcellaire cuvées in 2023. We are back to finesse with this wine. The 2022 Puligny is beautifully aromatic, with all the floral character one could hope for. This has a brilliantly light touch despite the energy and the intensity. I think it is going to be a show stopper. Excellent natural acidity as well. JASPER MORRIS MW

Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet Champs Gains 1er 2022OUTSTANDING - Here the nose is compositionally quite different as it manifests notes of petrol, iodine and a shellfish hint along with plenty of floral nuances. Here is both fine punch and concentration to the sappy and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors that also exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent and firm finale. This won't win any awards for finesse but the fine quality is unassailable. BURGHOUND2022chardonnayFrance358$410.00 As low as $369.00

Louis Michel Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - More airy but with depth of aroma too. Extra wide - panoramic - the mineral stature of the last, perhaps faintly more incisive. It's a wine I'd wait longer to open - maybe 3 years to start with - but it's also a great wine. BILL NANSON
OUTSTANDING - A more elegant, airier and more floral-suffused nose combines notes of spiced pear and enough Chablis elements to be more than just interesting. The refined, delicious and caressing, if not quite as concentrated, middle weight flavors possess very good punch on the firm, balanced, moderately dry bitter lemon-inflected finish. This markedly stony, linear and chiseled effort is also quite good and worth considering. BURGHOUND
The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with touches of frangipane infusing the citrus fruit and hints of dried orange peel coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy-textured opening. Good delineation, quite saline, with a twist of sour lemon dovetailing into a slight nutty/smoky note on the finish. Genot Boulanger Meursault Clos du Cromin 2021
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - 1.5 ha – the part closest to Meursault village – plenty of clay but the limestone is quickly found below. Hmm, spiced, deeply aromatic – partly due to some noble reduction. Broad, vibrant wine – faintly tannic, spiced, classic Meursault – bravo! BILL NANSON
Fruit aromas range from citrus peel to apricot with accents of butter and spice. The texture is rich, but the body is balanced by the racy acidity of the 2021 vintage. This wine will drink well on release but is undoubtedly suited to at least mid-term cellaring. The village-level vines of this lieu-dit are at the base of the slope just outside the town of Meursault; the domaine farms 1.5 hectares here to produce this delicious certified-organic wine. Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons 2021
Broader, more incisive, still with a little noble reduction. Cool fruit, calmer than the first impression of the Cromin but similarly juicy in the middle and finishing flavours – a hint more austerity – citrus skin bitters – in this finish so I’d wait a little longer to open but an excellent wine with fine intensity. BILL NANSON
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Levrons, which was not affected by frost and consequently bestowed a generous 50hl/ha, has a minerally bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with touches of wet limestone and struck match. The palate is well balanced with a spicy opening, fine depth and a keen thread of acidity; a sprinkling of white pepper appears towards the finish. NEAL MARTIN

Genot Boulanger Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes 2021
This nose is narrower than the Levrons – but deep and again with that faint noble reduction the top notes more spiced. More incisive to start – a bit more energy on dsplay here too – a more herbed complexity that mixes with heavier citrus notes – impressive and also for keeping a little while, also a little tannin on the end of my tongue! BILL NANSON
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Nosroyes has a little more delineation and vigour on the nose compared to the Levrons with menthol-tinged citrus fruit, lime and crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with a little more "bite" than the Levrons, modest depth with a nicely detailed, Meursault-like finish. Fine. NEAL MARTIN

Mouth-filling, melting, open – almost fluid in style – just a beautiful shape and mouth-watering style – a bottle of this wouldn’t last very long on my table – bravo! BILL NANSON
The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a pure and perfumed bouquet with yellow fruit, marzipan and light almond scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a touch of white pepper and orange rind mixed with tropical notes towards the finish - peach and passion fruit. NEAL MARTIN

Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022
From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

Review on a previous release
Proving superior Blanc de Blancs is quite possible in the Aube's Pinot Noir paradise, this opens with lemon cream and persistent white chocolate and nougat through the palate. Details of white flowers, peach and almond. Very gourmand and complex, and quite a counterpoint to the more austere Chardonnay Champagnes from further north. 100% Chardonnay. Single parcel. Peay Vineyards West Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2022The 2022 Chardonnay (West Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, mint, tangerine peel and a kiss of French oak all grace this tasty Chardonnay. Time in the glass releases some of the wine's textural intensity.ANTONIO GALLONI
The 2022 Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast sports a bright yellow/straw hue and is expressive on opening with notes of pear, white flowers, orange blossom, and fresh hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied, it reveals a nice linear feel, but it has a lovely, high-quality carriage of citrus oils (lime) and a long, great, mouthwatering finish. Drink this over the next 10 years. Eleni et Edouard Vocoret Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2022The 2022 Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot underwent partial tressage in the vineyard this year, so the Vocorets could compare. They found the fruit ripened earlier with more intense aromas. These will be bottled separately. It has a lovely peachy, nectarine-tinged bouquet that blossoms in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with touches of grapefruit and white peach. It is very elegant and pure, with a touch of spice towards the finish. Simply a mouthwatering prospect - difficult to believe this is not a Premier Cru. NEAL MARTIN
TOP VALUE - This also displays an ample amount of mineral reduction on the aromas of brine, algae and white orchard fruit. There is even better density to the sappy and palate soaking medium-bodied flavors that also flash focused power on the stony, moderately austere and beautifully persistent finale. This is also excellent. BURGHOUND

Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
From the Full Moon Vineyard in Gladysdale. Wild ferment and 100% mlf. There's only one wine from winemakers and friends Steve Flamsteed and Dave Mackintosh, and it's always a good 'un. A bright green gold. There's aromas of ripe stone fruits together with some savoury and complex briny notes. On the palate, this has lots of flavour and punch, finishing long with a refreshing touch of grip. Delicious now and over the next 4–6 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion
One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Classy, understated and delicious. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Fron

This is fresh, crunchy and clean, with mineral and spice notes and plenty of salty undertones. Sliced lemons and apples. Medium-bodied with a fresh finish. Drink now. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING
The Brajkovichs remain firmly on top when it comes to New Zealand Chardonnay, finding another gear over the last decade as the competition around them heats up. They are undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest white wine producer and have set a blistering pace for the variety over the last four decades.Yes, this small family winery that's sandwiched between a winding river and a busy highway is a world beater. Collectors from the across the world are eager to snap up their wares upon release. Pulling off the highway just beyond the outskirts of Auckland and stepping through the lemon-yellow archway that leads into the tasting room it all seems a bit impossible. Maybe better suited to a few souvenirs, tea and scones perhaps? Then you taste the wines.

William Fevre Chablis 2022
FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. Drink from 2025-2030 JASPER MORRIS MW
TOP VALUE - There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit. There is also slightly better volume and richness to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a refreshing, clean, dry and sleek finale. This is very good for its level plus it should reward a few years of keeping if desired. BURGHOUND
Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age. DECANTER

Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Chardonnay 2023Before I tell you that Bruce Dukes' career has spanned over 3 decades and that he's had years of experience both locally and abroad, it's likely a good idea to start at the finish: Bruce Dukes is wholly talented, and while he makes high-quality acclaimed wines for his own estate - Domaine Naturaliste - he also does this for a raft of other, smaller producers in Margaret River and Geographe. His winemaking style is one of fresh, pure fruit over obvious or intrusive winemaking artifact, and the wines routinely possess a polish and eminent drinkability. ERIN LARKIN
Aromas of crushed stones, lemon peel, sliced pink grapefruit and subtle ground spice. Medium-bodied with a lot of pleasant white tea character. Jasmine and leafy herbs come through. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING
Tasting with Bruce is a pretty remarkable experience. The guy knows his business and he knows he is getting things done, better than most. He is a crazy character though. You have to strap in and get ready for the ride. He runs from jovial and humorous through to intense and stern. Kind of like his wines. Some of them are driven, intense and focused things, some are a little more uplifting and joyous. This one definitely sits somewhere in the middle and we love it!2023chardonnayAustralia432$30.00 As low as $27.00 -

Walsh & Sons Hamish Chardonnay 2023
Named for Hamish David Walsh, and as it happens, my brother is David Arthur Walsh. A blend of Burnside Chardonnay (raised in anfora) and Osmington (three year old oak).
Well, this is a wild one for sure. It’s kind of sweaty and clove spiced, oyster shell, white mushroom, lime and cape gooseberry. It’s saline and savoury, powdery and dusty in texture, some cashew cream in the mix, with a curry leaf finish of good length. It’s kind of dirty, and yet, I find it strangely compelling. Hard to rate, interesting to drink! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Palliser Estate Om Santi Chardonnay 2022This is an exercise in power and balance. It's off the 100% organic Om Santi vineyard utilising clones 15 and 95. It has lovely length and mouth-feel, with a really fine line of acidity running through it. The flavours are full and focused, with a core of nectarine, grapefruit, nougat and a tingly, tangy minerality. A very classy chardonnay indeed. Dry River Chardonnay 2022Concentrated chardonnay with purity and power. White peach, nectarine, citrus flavours contrast tantalisingly with spicy oak and saline/oyster shell flavours. A core of sweetness is perfectly balanced by tangy acidity. Accessible now but should develop well with bottle age.
