  1. Saint-Gall Blanc De Blancs Orpale 2008
Saint-Gall Blanc De Blancs Orpale 2008
100% chardonnay from grand cru villages in the Côte des Blancs (Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Avize, Oger) from the 2008 vintage. 7g/l dosage

Luminous golden colour and fine cords of bubbles. The nose first reveals notes of citrus, candied lemon and yellow fruits. Then it evolves and reveals smoky notes of blond tobacco and roasted nuts. The finish is refreshing and long, ORPALE 2008 was imagined as a jewel of a cuvee. The 2008 Orpale is an exceptional, passionate cuvée that naturally has a special place at the table, served with gourmet aperitifs or with fine dishes during a meal. Domaine Wine Shippers, Importer

  2. Champagne Jean Vesselle Extra Brut NV
Champagne Jean Vesselle Extra Brut NV
80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. In 1975 the domaine decided to introduce a ‘natural cuvée’, they didn't add the usual dosage. This resulted in a clear, lively Champagne that was ideal as an aperitif. At this time there were only three producers making this kind of Champagne, each had their own name for the wine: Brut 0, Brut Savage, and in the case of Jean Vesselle, Brut 100%. Today the wine - this wine - is named ‘Extra Brut’. It's very interesting considering the popularity of 'Extra Brut' and zero dosage wines today. It has the power and roundness of Pinot Noir with the drive and minerality of Chardonnay. French Wine Centre

  3. Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2015
Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2015
The 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs marries textural intensity with a good deal of freshness. White pepper, dried herbs, chalk, mint and citrus make a strong opening impression. I especially like the energy and tension here, but there’s plenty of depth, too. I would give the 2015 a year or two in bottle, maybe more, as it is quite reticent in the early going. It, too, is seriously impressive for the year. Disgorged: July 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Antonio Galloni VINOUS

  4. Bonnaire Cramant Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc Extra Brut 2013
Bonnaire Cramant Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc Extra Brut 2013

100% Chardonnay made from the oldest vines of the estate, grown on two of the very best parcels in Cramant: the lieu-dits of Le Bateau and Les Terres de Buisson. Showing a very fine mousse with chalky minerality and citrus notes it finishes with great length and palate presence. This is the essence of Cramant, a stunning blanc de blancs with impeccable finesse and pinpoint balance. Matured for 6 years on lees and disgorged in March 2020, with a 5 g/L dosage. 5. Ayala Blanc de Blanc 2016
    Ayala Blanc de Blanc 2016

The 2016 Le Blanc de Blancs is one of the better wines I have tasted here of late. Exuberant and quite expressive, the 2016 soars with cents of lemon confit, marzipan and sweet spice, all in a forward, open-knit style that offers good near-term appeal. All this needs is a bit more focus in its bouquet, but is still a big step up from the past. Light tropical accents linger on the close. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

  6. Maison Gamet Champagne 'Rive Droite' NV
Maison Gamet Champagne 'Rive Droite' NV
This plush Champagne has delicate apple blossom and chamomile notes wafting through finely meshed flavors of white cherry, peach skin, raw almond and fleur de sel. Well-balanced, bright and lightly mouthwatering, with a minerally finish. Disgorged December 2022. Drink now.  Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

The NV Brut Rive Gauche (base 2019) is a deep, vinous Champagne. This is mostly Meunier and Pinot Noir, which is exactly what comes through in a Champagne packed with red fruits, spice, cedar and dried flowers. The Rive Gauche is a bit rustic, but appealing in its own way. It will be a fine companion at the dinner table. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

  7. Brocard Pierre Champagne 'Tradition' NV
    Brocard Pierre Champagne 'Tradition' NV
Brocard Pierre's entry-level and only blended-grape expression of Champagne, Cuvée Tradition Brut, spends three years on the lees in bottle before release, which in our opinion, makes it one of the best quality-for-value wine of Champagne.

The Tradition is made of Pinot Noir (80%), Chardonnay (10%) and Pinot Blanc (10%) grapes from vineyards planted on clay-calcareous soil near Celles-sur-Ource. 2018 vintage reserve wine makes up the dominant base, while 30% comes from different réserve vintages. The juice was fermented in oak (15%) and stainless steel (85%) at controlled temperature. The wine then spent 4 months in stainless steel, and it was aged on lees for 2.5 years. It has 6g/l of dosage.

A flattering nose dominated by the Pinot Noir. Good harmony in the mouth, strength associated with freshness but not heavy accompanied by a slightly mentholated finish. Ripe citrus. Unctuous mousse. Chalky, mineral and saline and mouth coating. Generous autolitic notes.

  8. Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2015
    Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2015

The predominance of Pinot Noir (50%), produced exclusively from grapes selected from the Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages, provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot. Chardonnay (30%) brings the elegance and finesse of a perfectly balanced wine, while a small percentage of Pinot Meunier (20%) rounds out the blend.

Veuve Clicquot’s Vintage collection is unique for its use of wines vinified and aged in large oak casks (10%), which adds strength and aromatic intensity. The cask-aged wines bring an additional complexity with their spicy notes and subtle roast coffee and toasted aromas. Veuve Clicquot

  9. Lassalle Cuvee Special Club 2012
    Lassalle Cuvee Special Club 2012
The 2012 Brut Spécial Club is gorgeous. Radiant and expansive in the glass, the 2012 offers up a compelling mélange of dried pear, apricot spice, chamomile crushed flowers and almond. There’s lovely complexity and nuance, as well as captivating balance between the freshness that is such a house signature with the natural radiance of the year. The 2012 can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade, maybe more. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

  10. Louis Roederer Collection 243
    Louis Roederer Collection 243
Based on the 2018 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from a solera established in 2012, as well as younger foudre-aged reserve wines, Roederer's newly released NV Brut Collection 243 is a pillowy, enveloping Champagne evocative of crisp stone fruits, honeycomb, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and generous, with an ample core of fruit, bright acids and a saline finish, it will offer demonstrative drinking on release. William Kelley, Robert Parker

  11. Champagne Hebrart Premier Cru Rosé Brut NV
Champagne Hebrart Premier Cru Rosé Brut NV

The NV Brut Rosé is flat-out delicious. The word 'balance' is so overused in wine, but I really can't think of a better way to describe the Brut Rosé. It is not nervy nor overly rich, but just impeccable in its poise and overall harmony. A healthy amount of Pinot lends volume and intensity to this Chardonnay-based Rosé. This is the sort of wine that is opened and disappears within a few minutes. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

  12. Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2016
    Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2016
Based on 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, the 2016 Champagne Vintage Brut is released only after 6-7 years on the lees (sur latte). It pours a straw hue and displays a more expressive profile on opening, with notes of tangerine and fresh flowers, its red fruit coming through with fresh red raspberry and peppery spice. It's medium-bodied and rounded through the palate, with excellent structure, powerful concentration, and a long finish. This has a refined yet powerful feel and will be a wine with significant longevity and slow maturation over the next 15-20 years. True to the house style, it has a sturdy backbone and is emblematic of a fantastic vintage champagne from Pol Roger. The mousse is pinpoint and rounded on the finish (95) JEB DUNNUCK

The 2016 Brut Vintage reveals a complex, gourmand bouquet with aromas of ripe orchard fruits, nectarine, pastry, nuts, sweet spices and ripe white fruits, signs of a warm vintage. Full-bodied, broad and vinous with a fleshy core of fruit, it's rich and elegant with a penetrating, saline finish. It will drink at its peak in five to 10 years WINE ADVOCATE

A very elegant and silky vintage Champagne with a seamless harmony of candied citrus fruit, sushi ginger and dried cherry character with racy acidity and delicate minerality at the long, straight and refined finish. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

  13. Sven Joschke Pet Nat Chardonnay 2022
Sven Joschke Pet Nat Chardonnay 2022
After playing around with Chardonnay from the Barossa in V21 as a test run, we had to put it into a Pet Nat. It showed linear acidity and minerality with that classic Chardy depth. A nice cool Barossa year in 22 suited this Chardy too. Fruit was picked at 10.9 baume, ph super low, immediately bag pressed and chilled to facilitate settling of solids. Tank vinification temp controlled with a component of non-fermented juice kept separate for post fermentation dosage. Juice was then added back to the base wine once settled, bottled and allowed to ferment in bottle. No adds, fining or sulphites, just the juice.

  14. Raventos i Blanc 'de la Finca' 2019
Raventos i Blanc 'de la Finca' 2019
Earthy and golden, toasty and generous but beautifully edged with a crunchy green apple finish. Mineral, with jasmine, garden weeds, honeysuckle and waxy pollen. A faux sweetness of syrup-soaked gooseberries, pistachio husk, golden bread crust then acidity and maritime minerality. The finish is long and persistent and speaks of ocean floors of eras gone by, as this is a wine of place, and that place is all fossils! Limestone, limestone, limestone, oil lamp-come-olive brine salinity, preserved scallop shells and sour stones provide the mineral backbone.

  15. Eminence 'Cute Brut' Zero Dosage Rose NV
Eminence 'Cute Brut' Zero Dosage Rose NV
The fruit for this was handpicked and gently whole bunch pressed, before being transferred to old French oak for fermentation. No yeast, enzyme or nutrient was added and the ferment was kept at around 15 degrees to preserve aromatics. After primary ferment, the barrels had a small sulphur addition before resting over winter on the yeast lees. 11 months later, we assembled a blend of 38% pinot noir (white base wine), 2% pinot noir red wine (for that lovely colour), 30% chardonnay and 30% pinot meunier. The chardonnay was a blend of vintages, but the pinots were 2019 base wine - so this wine must be labelled NV.  After fermenting again (creating the bubbles!) It was then aged on lees for 30 months before being disgorged with zero dosage.

  16. Raventos i Blanc 'de Nit' Rosado 2020
Raventos i Blanc 'de Nit' Rosado 2020

Dry pink of great elegance. A lovely faded rose pink colour, it smells of gently boozed strawberries, dusty rose aromatics - perfumed without any outrageous fruitiness or excess. Nice false sweetness on entry -the balance is ultimately off-dry, juicy and gentle, with high quality delicate bubbles underpinning the fruit, cutting the fruitiness and running on to a super-gently acid close.

  17. Bellebonne Vintage Rose 2020
    Bellebonne Vintage Rose 2020
Bellebonne is relatively new in the fine wine scene and the wines are quickly gaining traction, and rightly so.
Wine maker Nat Fryar created Bellebonne on the backs of making quality sparkling wine at Jansz for 20+ years.
The 2020 vintage Rose is made from 100% pinot noir grapes from Tasmania and expresses delicately wound fruit of fresh strawberries, sour cherries and Turkish delight. There are some lovely background autolytic notes for the classical Champagne fans out there but have no fear - everything is thoughtfully and delicately in check.

  18. Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz 2012
    Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz 2012

I know, I know. Every year I urge you to consider including this classic Australian wine style in your Christmas drinking schedule. And, look, here I am again, tempting you with the latest vintage of Seppelt Show Shiraz, first made at Great Western in the 1890s: deep purple foaming in the glass, full of rich, dark aromas of squishy bramble berries and sweet soy, bold and chocolatey and super satisfying in the mouth. Is there a better wine match for roast turkey and glazed ham? I don’t think so.  MAX ALLEN

What a wonderful wine this is in the genre of sparkling red for Australia and generally as an iconic totem in Aus wine. I’ve been trying to buy a bunch of older releases of this wine from auction sites for fun, and when I am successful, pretty happy with myself.

Liquorice and tar, first up, then the stewed plum, dried cranberry, cherry cola going on. It’s got bright flavours under the char and game meat qualities, tight, fine bubbles that feel a little looser than expected but still vigorous enough to lift things. Very savoury release, this one. Good tannin profile under the fizz and tart acidity too. It’s a pretty darn good release, this. Feels sophisticated in its way. MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com.au
