Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda 2017The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is flat out stunning. All the purest essence of Rionda comes through in a captivating Barolo that dazzles. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, rose petal, licorice and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that lift from the glass. Exotic and racy, the 2017 is a flat-out stunner. Now, for the million dollar question. Is it better than the 2016? Right now, I give an edge to the 2017 for its greater finesse and total sense of exotic beauty. But time will be the judge. I do look forward to tasting the 2016 and 2017 side by side! ANTONIO GALLONI
Bright red cherry, mint, potpourri, new leather, liquorice root. So fragrant. Fresh, very fine, tannin has a succulence, and they sit so well within the wine, melting through its core. Red fruits (strawberry in particular), tea and blood orange, and a superb long finish of precision and freshness. A beautiful expression of Vigna Rionda, and one that belies the heat of the vintage. Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Villero 2020
The 2019 Barolo Villero is the most inward of the wines in this range. It offers good depth, but today the acids and tannins are simply overwhelming. Time in the glass releases hints of tobacco, cedar, dried herbs and earthiness. It will be interesting to see if the Villero softens in bottle. Today, it is a bruiser, but a promising bruiser. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Forest floor, new leather, fragrant purple flower and spice aromas mingle together on the polished 2020 Villero from Giacomo Fenocchio. Full-bodied and smooth, the rather concentrated palate doles out liquor-soaked cherry, black raspberry, licorice and tobacco. Tightly knit, velvety tannins provide enveloping support. Drink 2028-2035. KERIN O'KEEFE
Ripe red/ruby in color, the 2020 Barolo Villero offers nice purity and ripeness in its notes of preserved cherries, menthol, fennel, and roses. It gains in intensity without weight on the palate, revealing ripe concentration, plush, ripe tannins, and good freshness. With mouthwatering saline and tension, notes of dried apricot on the back palate, and a long finish, it's a lovely wine to drink 2025-2037. AUDREY FRICKE

Querciabella Camartina 2003
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the 2003 Camartina is a drop-dead gorgeous effort. Fat, rich and opulent, it will reward consumers with its generous super-ripe fruit, great length and beautiful overall balance...It is a very refined effort in this vintage. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Even though this is 17 years old, the colour is still an amazingly deep garnet even if the rim is now transparent. Oo, that is rather lovely! Lots of evolution and subtlety, with a hint of quite attractive dustiness, on the nose. It does taste very much more like mature Cabernet (even Bordeaux) than anything informed by Sangiovese. Dry (but not drying) finish and really appetising – perhaps that's thanks to the Sangiovese. So it's all Cab on the nose and possibly Sangiovese on the finish. Long and playful. Tasted 5/22 WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com
Lifted spice and a head-spinning top note are joined by aromas of dark fruits, cassis and a touch of bright cherry mixed with woodland undergrowth. I love the ebullient personality of this wine - there's a crunchy, sappy green note to the juicy fruit which adds a counterpoint to the lush, velvety texture and creates a lovely, bright energy. It all comes together with an expressive exuberance. A wide-awake wine! DECANTER2007Cabernet Sauvignon, sangioveseItaly495$320.00 As low as $288.00 -
De Bortoli Melba Cabernet Sauvignon 2021Deep red with purple in the rim; a complex bouquet of cedar, cigarbox, cassis and flake tobacco, the palate full bodied and elegant, stately and savoury, with abundant fine-grained and insistent tannins and driving length. A very elegant, suave kind of cabernet, and true to its Yarra origins. It's delicious now but has an assured future if cellared. HUON HOOKE, The Real Review
Bold colour. Blackcurrant, blackberry, hazelnut, that terracotta-like earthiness you get in many anfora wines, dried flowers and sweet herbs. It’s medium-bodied, intense and deep in black and red fruit, a little tobacco, loads of chewy earthy tannin, and a lively perfumed (and tannic) finish of excellent length. So much energy. Love this. Fratelli Revello Barolo 2020The 2020 Barolo is everything a wine in this peer group should be: open-knit, inviting and ready to drink. Macerated red cherry, sweet spice, cedar and tobacco are pushed forward to round things out. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Nervy minerality with fresh raspberries, strawberries and white pepper. Medium body with juicy, chalky tannins and a pithy finish. Drink or hold. ZEKUN SHUAI, JamesSuckling.com

Fratelli Revello Barolo Giachini 2020The 2020 Barolo Giachini comes across as quite closed today. The aromatics are expressive, and yet the wine feels much more reticent on the palate. Sweet red cherry, leather, pipe tobacco, cedar and dried flowers open with great reluctance. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle helps this come together a bit more fully. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Refined, complex and nuanced nose with grainy minerals, grapefruit, white pepper and a mossy edge. Transparent but broad on the palate with lots of crushed wet stones and a tight, nervy finish. Le Cinciole Camalaione 2019The 2019 Camalaione is a dense, full-bodied wine. It is the most opulent of the wines in this range and also one that is the most similar to how these wines were made in the past. Deep, inky and layered, Camalaione has a ton to offer. The 2019 was vinified in amphora and spent two years in French oak barrels, 50% new, then a year in cement. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Syrah. Wynns Coonawarra Black Label Cabernet 2022
21 days on skins and matured for 16 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and barriques. The colour is a deeply pigmented magenta. The purity of just-ripe, immaculate blackberries, currants and plums is astounding. It’s almost stark in its pureness of fruit and restraint of oak additions. Elongated tannins and lingering acidity with Nyon olive brine, nutmeg and the slightest touch of fresh picked bay leaf. Confident and completely unsullied. Stunning now and will only improve with age. This is a testament to scintillating fruit and the winemaker’s appreciation of it. 96 SHANTEH WALE, wine companion

E. Pira Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi 2020The 2020 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, savory wine. Black cherry, gravel, incense, menthol and licorice all build in this virile, strapping Monforte Barolo. The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Mosconi has some of the extra ripeness of the vintage with cherry cream syrup, grenadine, watermelon candy and a drop of Pastis. The wine ends on a powerful note with a balanced combination of fruit and fine oak tannins. The palate is very alive, and the fruit feels very vibrant at this young stage. E. Pira Barolo Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 1500ml2 BOTTLES AVAILABLE
Nervy and complex nose with excellent depth. Oranges, nutmeg, steel, mineral and a touch of white pepper and oyster shell. Broad and expansive on the palate with very structured, chalky tannins that extend to a lengthy, mineral finish. Long and youthful. From organically grown grapes. Can drink now, but better from 2027. JAMES SUCKLING
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Cannubi is a fine and delicate wine, although there is a little more grit and richness in this warm vintage. The quality of the fruit is exceptional, especially its crisp ripeness. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, rose blossom, pink pepper and white limestone add considerable high-toned notes. The freshness is great and the fruit stays juicy, fueling a long, elegant finish. MONICA LARNER2020NebbioloItaly457$905.00 As low as $814.50 -
Massolino Barolo DOCG 2020STAFF PICKS 2024 - FRANKE
Fairing from iron-rich soils of Serralunga, the Massolino family carves out a niche for themselves in Barolo as being wines you can age, but also enjoy young due to the modern-classic style. Large format Slovenian oak tempers the fine tannins and a youthful elegant red fruit of strawberries is backed up with crushed herbs and hints of star-anise. Delightful. FRANKE
The 2020 Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. It offers up scents of pine, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed herbs. Delicate and elegant, with gorgeous aromatics and tons of presence, the 2020 is impeccably done. This bottling has aged quite well in the past. I imagine that will also be true of the 2020. ANTONIO GALLONI
Bright and lively red fruit character with dried flowers, stones and hints of tree resin. Medium-bodied, clean and focused on the palate, with fine tannins and a linear finish. Shows freshness and poise. Polished. Try from 2027, but already a joy to taste. JAMES SUCKLING2020NebbioloItaly457Special Price $91.00 Regular Price $108.00 -
Massolino Barolo Margheria 2020The 2020 Barolo Margheria is a very pretty wine that shows the gentler side of the year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, new leather and licorice all take shape in the glass. The 2020 is a soft, uncharacteristically open-knit Margheria that will drink well with only minimal cellaring. ANTONIO GALLONI
I like the freshness and vivid red-fruited character. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly chewy tannins. It’s compact and structured with a tense and lively aftertaste. Vivid and bright with hibiscus undertones to the orange and berry character. Try from 2027, but already very pretty. JAMES SUCKLING2020NebbioloItaly457Special Price $199.00 Regular Price $235.00 -
Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2021Dark and earthy to open, new leather and walnuts, wafts of bergamot, spice and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, deep in flavour, red and black fruits, kind of rustic, but in a pleasing way, not least in the tea and grainy tannin grip department. There’s a cinch of orange peel bitterness, with a long grated nutmeg and slightly rusty tannin finish. Really opens up after some air. Such character. A very serious Lange Neb! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
The word benchmark gets bandied around a lot, but this is a Nebbiolo that justifies that term from an already hyped vintage. This year’s wine is drawn exclusively from declassified, mostly young-vine fruit from the great Castiglione Falletto Cru of Bricco Boschis. Cropped at yields below 40 hl/ha, the grapes are entirely destemmed, and fermentation is spontaneous. Malolactic conversion was in cement tanks during the spring following harvest. The wine was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak botti and bottled unfiltered.2021NebbioloItaly457Special Price $85.00 Regular Price $100.00 -
Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova 2020Extremely perfumed with strawberry and forest floor with some sandalwood, roses and candied watermelon. Domenico Clerico Barolo 2020This Barolo shows plums, cranberries, fresh roses, violets, pomegranate and blood oranges. This interpretation exhibits a juicy acidity and chewy ripe tannins with a slightly toasty finish and the dustiness of Nebbiolo, but with a savory finish focused on licorice. The tannins will soften and develop more complexity in two to three years. JAMES SUCKLING

Wynns John Riddoch 2021Very deep, dark, impenetrable purple colour; a gorgeous fragrance of spicy superripe berries and a hint of licorice, super concentrated and almost essency. Traces of soy sauce and nori. The wine is highly concentrated on the palate; powerful, profound and rich, with masses of sweetly ripe berry fruit and no sign of herbal varietal touches. A profound and multi-dimensional cabernet that will richly reward long-term cellaring. It drinks superbly already but it would be sacrilege to open it before it's had more time to build the tertiary complexity that we know will come with time. (99) HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com
The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (98) ERIN LARKIN, wineadvocate.com
One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. (98) RAY JORDAN, rayjordan.com.au
"In one word - 'epic'. Having just returned from ten days in Bordeaux tasting a vast number of youthful Cabernets, among other styles of wine, if this beauty had been slipped into the mix, it would have lounged somewhere near the top of the pile…John Riddoch is more akin to an elite Saint-Estèphe than a typical New World Cabernet…'21 JR is pure, stunningly plush, deeply fruited but seemingly weightless and incredibly detailed. It is a superb thoroughbred with impeccable balance, and it is as relevant for an old-world geek as it is for a new-world disciple. It is time that Wynns John Riddoch sat alongside the acknowledged world Cabernet greats, and this vintage will undoubtedly help make this dream a reality. (19.5/20) MATTHEW JUKE

Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 2022
Screwcap. Three sources here. First, Massolino’s younger vines in Serralunga—in other words, declassified Barolo fruit. Then, Monforte’s Cascina I Maschi (Massolino credits this cool, chalky site with giving the wine lifted perfume and freshness). And finally, a parcel in Alba on lighter, sandy-clay soils, bringing generosity of fruit. The blend is roughly one-third from each of these areas, and there’s little doubt the sum of these parts brings even more finesse and early-drinking appeal to what has always been an outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo.
The 2022 is another gorgeous release from this label. It is a pure-fruited, pretty wine (suggesting strawberry, cherry, violet, anise) with ripe, chalky tannins and a terrific, perfumed finish spiked with graphite-like minerality. Following very gentle extraction, it aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 15 months, as opposed to 24-plus months for the Barolo wine. To call this a bargain is to grossly understate the case!

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2021Neive. Just mid ruby. At first very closed but with aeration, aromatic cherry fruit creeps up. WALTER SPELLER Jancisrobinson.com
The 2021 Barbaresco Albesani is a super-classic wine that is going to need time to come around. It possesses notable structure and the understated depth that is common of Barbaresco. Time in the glass brings out scents of herbs, white pepper, autumn leaves and spice. All this needs is time in bottle. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The 2020 Barolo Parafada is a delicate, focused wine. Bright red fruit, mint white pepper and crushed herbs are all nicely delineated. This mid-weight, nervy Barolo is all class and very approachable now, but it needs time to be at its finest. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Parafada is a small MGA in a basin with full south, east and west exposures. Massolino's interpretation is surgical: super-zesty with earthy strawberry, liquorice, fresh violet and a Pinot-like elegance. Sottimano Pajore Barbaresco 2021
This wine comes from a 1.5-hectare plot with white soils and 40- to 50-year-old vines. Pajoré tends to produce austere wines with an etched mineral note and without the glossy softness you can get in some of the other parcels. The Sottimano 2021 Barbaresco Pajoré saw submerged-cap fermentation until January 20, 2022, marking one of the longest maceration times to date for this estate. This pretty wine has a ferrous or metallic note coupled with crushed mineral. These shape an angular, almost cubist personality. However, you also get tart cassis and crushed peppercorn. The wine is indeed more austere, and this bodes well for a long aging window. The tannins are grippy and tight. (96+) MONICA LARNER
So perfumed, the 2021 Pajorè from Sottimano is a stunner, with enticing aromas of mocha, ripe red berry, camphor, violet and forest floor. The intense, full-bodied palate is super savory, delivering succulent raspberry, Marasca cherry, baking spice, star anise and hints of hazelnut before a cool, minty finish. Tightly knit, close-grained tannins provide support while bright acidity keeps it balanced and energized. A gorgeous wine. Drink 2028-2036. (96) KERIN O'KEEFEThe 2021 Barbaresco Pajorè has shut down massively since I tasted it last year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, game and tobacco infuse the palate with tremendous complexity. Readers will find an austere, classically built Barbaresco for the cellar. Time in the glass brings out the natural breadth and structure of Pajorè. Quite simply, this is an archetype. What a wine. Sottimano Fausoni Barbaresco 2021
Fausoni is a 1.5-hectare plot with old vines up to 70 years old in age. The Sottimano 2021 Barbaresco Fausoni delivers more oomph and texture thanks to clay and sandy soils that definitely make the difference. In terms of aromas, this wine is quite floral and delicate with citrusy oils, dates, tamarind and lavender. The tannins are elegant and chalky. (96) MONICA LARNER
Aromas of mocha mingle with underbrush, blue flower and exotic brown spice on the intensely fragrant Fausoni from Sottimano. On the palate, firm, fine-grained tannins accompany spiced cranberry, blood orange, licorice and chocolate. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. This will be even better in a few more years once it has fully come together. Drink 2028-2036. (96) KERIN O'KEEFE
The 2021 Barbaresco Fausoni is a wine for readers who appreciate the more linear, old-school style of Nebbiolo. Chalk, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cedar, blood orange and sweet red cherry fruit all race across the palate. Sottimano Cotta Barbaresco 2021
This wine comes from a 2.8-hectare vineyard purchased by Andrea Sottimano's father in 1969. Today, the vines are 80 years old and planted in very wide spacing that once had vegetables and artichokes between the rows. The soils are sandy like in Rabajà and Asili. The 2021 Barbaresco Cottá was the last wine in our flight. That's because it has the biggest concentration and richness. It offers a full bouquet with sweet berry fruits, dried herb and dark spice. It makes a big impact on the palate, and it shows an intense, long-lasting mouthfeel. All of these Sottimano wines are racked into oak sometime after January, and malolactic fermentation proceeds very slowly (finishing at the end of summer or closer to harvest). This gives the wine a reductive character. The aromas here are very delicate and fine with carob, forest fruit, orange rind and blue flower. The tannins are powdery and fine. This beautiful Nebbiolo drinks like a Pinot Noir (97) MONICA LARNER
Intense aromas of iris mingle with fresh cranberry, ground clove and camphor on the fabulous Cottà from Sottimano. Focused and elegantly structured, the delicious, balanced palate features juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and saline alongside vibrant acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. What a beauty. 2028-2036. (97) KERIN O'KEEFE
The 2021 Barbaresco Cottá is quite the powerhouse. As usual, it is marked by a huge mid-palate of fruit, but more classic winemaking these days keeps that in check while also adding the notable structural dimension to balance things out. Black cherry, licorice, incense, graphite, tobacco and scorched earth all build in a virile, potent Barbaresco to treasure for the next two decades. This has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI

Voyager Estate The Modern Cabernet 2021
First poured, a ghastly apparition appeared – as if this had been placed in a corset and cinched tight. In a vinous sense, that means decanting or letting this beauty breathe in the glass. It has all the varietal appeal of Margs: its shapely tannins, supple and ever-so-slightly grainy and its savouriness. Very little oak impact (15% new French barriques), other than offering a complementary light seasoning of cedary spices. 95 JANE FAULKNER, wine companion

Oakridge 864 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021Fruit from a 1996-planted vineyard. Four weeks post-fermentation maceration, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. Virtually identical winemaking to the Original Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but, as always, this is the denser, more powerful and structured wine. On the nose there's a core of perfectly ripened black fruits, crushed violets, dark chocolate and graphite. The medium bodied, firmly structured and persistent palate is equally good, and anyone fortunate enough to still have a bottle 10–15 years (if not longer) from now will be well rewarded. 97 PHILIP RICH, wine companion2021Cabernet SauvignonAustralia506$110.00 As low as $99.00

Oakridge LVS Barkala Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
From one of the few cabernet vineyards in the Upper Yarra; planted at 240m elevation in Wandin East. Matured in French barriques (30% new) for 15 months. A medium crimson purple. Perfectly ripened cabernet fruit exhibiting aromas of dark cherry, violets, a little bramble and some complexing bell pepper. Medium bodied and compact, the fruit has swallowed up the oak and while it's a touch firm once it fleshes out a little (and it will) this should provide considerable pleasure for a decade or so. 95 PHILIP RICH, wine companion

Frankland Estate Cabernet 2022There’s a brashness of youth on show, with plumped-up, slightly raspy tannins, cedary oak and cigar smoke, too. This needs more time to amalgamate, and it will as the foundation is solid; cassis, brambleberries, leafy freshness and woodsy spices fill out the full-bodied palate. Arpepe Rosso di Valtellina 2022This is your perfect introduction to understanding Valtellina.
Elemental wine, earthy and of pumice and granite, bright cherry, dried herbs, alpine herbs, so fragrant and so pretty in the palate. Grippy, fine, silty tannins, lots of dried citrus peel and dried blood. Freshness in all this. Far out. So much on. This is outstanding, The drinkability through the roof, and yet structure in tow. Beautiful wine all up. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front
Sweet violets and red and dark fruit on the nose. Layered and complex profile. Very juicy with a light to medium body and dry, extracted tannins in the finish, yet fierce and still rugged. Quite a personality. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING2022NebbioloItaly457$64.00 As low as $57.60 -
Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 1996Full red-purple; concentrated, ripe, cassis and blackberry fruit leaps from the glass, with oak present but trailing behind. The palate is as rich, ripe, succulent and concentrated as the bouquet suggests, redolent with cassis, and long, lingering tannins. Ceretto Barbaresco 2021
Tasted from barrel, the 2021 Barbaresco is a very pretty, easygoing wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, spice and white pepper give the 2021 lovely aromatic lift to match its mid-weight personality. This is shaping up well. ANTONIO GALLONI
Balsamic aromas of camphor mix with grilled sage, rose and culinary spice on this fragrant red. The vibrant palate offers cranberry, star anise and blood orange before a saline close. Taut, polished tannins and bright acidity provide the framework KERIN OKEEFE

Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot 2021
Here's the star wine in this flight from Ceretto. The 2021 Barbaresco Bernadot is a beautiful expression with great balance and pretty aromas of bright berry, cherry-cranberry, pressed flower, balsamic aged vinegar, dark fruit and rye biscuit or something with dark grains. The wine shows great acidity and good intensity with a long finish, and it remains sprightly overall, carrying its medium fruit weight with grace. (95) MONICA LARNER
Ceretto's 2021 Barbaresco Bernardot is laced with dark cherry, grilled herbs, mint, tobacco and cedar. This is a decidedly floral, earthy Barbaresco endowed with fine balance and plenty of immediacy. This opens beautifully with some air, as the fruit emerges, wrapped by plenty of Bernardot muscle. This is classic Treiso. ANTONIO GALLONI

This has stunning cassis and blackberry fruit with delicate notes of spice and smoke. Excellent concentration and focus on the palate, the abundant fine tannins effortlessly carrying the very long, plush finish that already makes this irresistible! JAMES SUCKLING
The 2021 The Farm Single Vineyard Cabernet Malbec is a singularly impressive wine: it is juicy and vibrant, but it is also layered with spice, rose petals, leaf/bramble and black tea nuance. The wine is detailed, incredibly so for the price (approximately $35AUD), and is possessed of the Clare Valley regional leafiness that so defines the Cabernets (and, to a certain extent, the Malbecs) from here. It's really good. ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2020 1500ml1 AVAILABLE
The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here. (96) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
The Vietti 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a very delineated wine with sharp ferrous notes, cherry cola, redcurrant and chalky mineral. It is extremely precise in terms of its aromas. The effect is direct and layered, showing different sides and increasing complexity as it opens in the glass. Dried floral notes, purple flower and iris also appear delicately. The chalky tannins feel abrupt at this young stage, but this wine is built to last nonetheless. Only 3,512 bottles were created. (96) MONICA LARNER2020NebbioloItaly457$1,155.00 As low as $1,039.50
