  4. Ministry of Clouds Tempranillo Grenache 2023
Ministry of Clouds Tempranillo Grenache 2023
60/40% tempranillo/grenache. From grower and estate vines with whole berry and whole bunch carbonic maceration, extended time on skins (four to five weeks), with one grenache parcel at 25 weeks; maturation in 3500 and 5000L foudre, eggs and puncheons. Tempranillo leads with cherry, anise, cola and black plum accented by spicy stem and skin notes; the grenache percolates up with wild raspberry and rosehip notes while giving the palate a more open feel, moderating its partner’s tannins through the middle, cleaning up the tail and giving this real gastronomic purpose. 5. Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2023
    Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2023
From bush vines planted in 1929 and 1949 with some whole bunch in the mix.
Talk about personality. This is bunchy, meaty, floral and more, its light-but-bright fruit completely infiltrated by savouriness and smokiness and general herbal complexities. This wine is drastically dry and tannic in, as far as I'm concerned, the best of ways. It works as a wild ride through the streets of modern Australian grenache. I love it. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON

  6. Rimauresq Cru Classe Rose 2023
    Rimauresq Cru Classe Rose 2023
'Rimauresq is one of a handful of estates in the Côtes de Provence designated Cru Classé (“classified growth”), with more than a century of elite rosé behind it, and after tasting this latest arrival, I’m reminded of how transcendent a proper Provençal rosé can be. There’s a lot going on here.  Put your nose in the glass and the fragrant scrub-brush of Provence sprouts up around you, beckoning you to the azure shores of the Mediterranean. Load up. IAN CAUBLE, Master Sommelier

A blend of Cinsault, Grenache Gris, and Tibouren, the Cru Classé that highlights classic Provence terroir of sandy, gravely soils. A mineral thready that pins down crunchy red fruits, some rose petal lift and wonderful vibrancy without sacrificing lush fruits.

  7. Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2023
Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Cotes de Provence Rose 2023
Pale, shimmering orange-pink. Spice-accented red currant, cherry and floral scents pick up a hint of orange pith with air. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and red berry flavors and a touch of candied lavender. Finishes long and silky, with repeating florality and a zesty snap of white pepper. 8. Spinifex Papillon 2023
    Spinifex Papillon 2023

Pete Schell's Papillon and I have had a thing going for a while. If I spy it on a wine list it's often what I'll go for as it consistently delivers a great drinking experience and matches a range of foods. This year it's 66/31/3% grenache/cinsault/counoise 3%. Spacious, sapid and energetic, it's all raspberries and cranberries daubed with exotic spice, rose petals, sour cherry, dried herbs and stone. That whoosh of sour red plum at the end gets me every time. So good! (95) DAVE BROOKS, thewinecompanion

This is 66% grenache, 31% cinsault and 3% counoise. Always the shapeshifter is Papillon.
Cool and fresh. Lively and bright. A chillable, slurpy, crunchy red emerges. Red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, alpine herbs, some menthol-like lift, aniseed and pepper, a touch of white chocolate. Good energy here. Some real get up and go. Freshness implicit. Cool. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Light cherry red hue. Raspberry, blueberry and anise aromas. Bright on the palate: juicy raspberry fruits with hints of rosemary and dusty earth adding complexity. The freshness of the acidity makes for a deliciousness that really appeals, and tannins kick through at the back end to dry the finish. STUART KNOX, The Real Review

  9. Exopto Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2023
Exopto Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2023

This wine has dropped the Bozeto styling and is now simply called Exopto. New name, same vibrant, great-value Rioja. This pan-regional expression of Rioja’s three principal grape varieties is conceived as a lively, easy-drinking introduction to the range. Most entry-level wines from this region are based on Tempranillo (a variety easier and more profitable to grow), yet here Garnacha represents 65% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from very old vines in the sandy, river-stone terroirs of El Agudo and Al Casillón at Alfaro (Rioja Oriental). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (high-county Rioja Alta), and some Ábalos Graciano adds freshness and finesse.

The wine ferments in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then ages for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. These days, Tom includes a measure of semi-carbonic maceration for extra buoyancy. Opening with perfumes of dusky berries and well-judged spice, this is a wonderfully aromatic, restaurant-friendly wine. It’s a wine that impresses with its precision rather than power. Even so, the warmer year gives an open, juicy wine and a great deal of drinking pleasure: spice, vibrancy and velvety flow flecked with notes of espresso, dried flowers and wild woody herbiness to go with its smoky blackberry fruit. If you’re looking for a bright, succulent grower Rioja, few will deliver better value than this.

Chaffey Bros Pax Aeterna Old Vine Grenache 2023
Old-vine grenache off Kevin Schild's vineyard in Vine Vale; 30% whole bunches.
A light ruby colour and fragrant aromas of raspberry, red plum and cranberry fruits dabbed with exotic ginger spice, light amaro tones, dried citrus rind and pressed flowers. Airy and spacious with a meaty, savoury flow across the tongue, light chalky tannins tugging at the roof of the mouth and a lively, lacy line of acidity. DAVE BROOKS, winecompanion.com
