This makes it an outlier among Rüdesheimer Grosse Lagen. The vines are 50 and 20 years old. Just a hint of honey plays on the nose, with a slight note of shriveled, dry fruit that was common in 2020. The palate is rounded and really concentrated, with insistent, bright, dried lemon notes and citrus pith. Brash Higgins RSM Semillon Riesling 2022From 1975 plantings in Blewitt Spring, riesling (70%) and semillon (30%) are picked together, kept on skins for a couple of days, then basket pressed for co-ferment in old barrels and one steel vat. This is a fuller-bodied expression of two varieties that are often represented in more trim form. Lightly oily and saline of feel, this still has zest and verve, with pungent lime oil, stone fruit, lemon pith, mint, fresh fenugreek and a bitter tonic note. It's an engagingly eccentric blend. The high-risk part comes after the canes that feed the fruit are cut – causing that fruit to concentrate – effectively using the vine as a drying rack for the fruit. This wine sits in a range the Blancks call "Les Classiques". These are easy, accessible wines made from the traditional Alsatian grape varieties. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.

Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.
The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

Fermented over the course of three weeks – for a riesling – in a 10 degree room and then left to ferment (or to stop fermenting, naturally) over the course of another week, in a 1 degree room. Finished wine has 10 grams/litre residual.There’s decent intensity the the fruit flavour here but it’s mostly defined by its soft, fluid nature, and by the savoury-like notes about the edges. Yes there’s some fruit sweetness here too and it plays its role but it’s a long way from being a dominant factor, other than of course than contributing to the wine’s softness. From plantings in the early noughties and a distinct block that sings from a somewhat different hymn book, is the idea.Flavourtown starring riesling! This has width and depth, a sumptuousness yet the tickle of brine and crushed granite minerality feels stippled through the wine. The mainstays are cumquat, green apple, a touch of blackcurrant, even some laid back tropical fruit notes and a squeeze of mandarin.
