From a block planted in '00/'01 on loam-dominant soils. A very bright green gold. Aromatic with classic citrus fruits together with some white peach, ripe pear, orange blossom and jasmine. Mouth-wateringly juicy and delicious with an underlying, fine vein of acidity. It's super now and will continue to be so for quite some time. Yum. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

From plantings in the early noughties and a distinct block that sings from a somewhat different hymn book, is the idea.

Flavourtown starring riesling! This has width and depth, a sumptuousness yet the tickle of brine and crushed granite minerality feels stippled through the wine. The mainstays are cumquat, green apple, a touch of blackcurrant, even some laid back tropical fruit notes and a squeeze of mandarin. It has that kind of open weave deliciousness and gulpability that urges drinking. Great to see this somewhat jazzy and looser knit riesling from this great producer. All in. Pale straw-green; the intense, yet tight, bouquet of citrus blossom leads in to a piercing palate with a seamless fusion of lime, apple and slatey acidity. It is the acidity that underwrites a 20-year future for the wine, its statement of the very cool place of its birth plain for all to see. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY

Deepish yellow colour, with lightly-browned toast and honey aromas, a trace of paraffin wax and a hint of beeswax, too. Aged release. A slight green-straw hue and a very good colour for its age. It's showing no signs of slowing down soon, thanks to the acidity across the fine palate. Welcome to the Riesling deep end. Not dramatic, but really profound, with massive structure. This is all wrapped in very refined mirabelle and fresh honeycomb aromas. Great textural complexity and chalky minerality. Flows so gracefully over the palate, gliding off into the distance. A mix of vines planted just after 1945 and young vines from a massal selection. The 2020 Riesling Clos Saint Landelin is already open and shows exquisitely ripe tart apple notes. A gorgeous aromatic overtone of apple and yarrow carries over to the palate, where a super-smooth, concentrated palate projects generosity without any fatness. Quite possibly the most delicious Pobblebonk to date. Riesling, friulano, pinot grigio and ribolla gialla are the friends, each fermented wild in used French oak, on full solids and later blended. It’s heady with meadow flowers, lemon blossom and hints of lemon verbena, really spicy with nutty, leesy aromas, and the palate is both textural and alive with fine acidity. The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Auslese, made with possibly just 5% botrytis, has a subtle scent of gentle lemon. The palate combines exquisite creaminess with candied lemon, smooth and serene, rich yet absolutely chiseled and streamlined, pushing forward with freshness and drive. The Juffer 2023 Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label, displays a quite aromatic and attractive nose of honeyed yellow peach, almond, rose, candied grapefruit, anise, smoke, William pear, a whiff of candy floss, and acacia. The wine combines intensity and a certain lightness and freshness on the palate, as both ripe, yellow fruits (canned yellow peach, quince, and pear) interplay with fresher elements including mint and anise. The finish is pure and aromatic (tangerine, mango), and proves nicely focused, despite the richness at play. This is a superb, playful riper Auslese. (94) mosel fine wines

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett shows the typical refined and fragrant slate and bright, elegant Riesling aromas of this famous terroir. The 2023 Kabinett is light, round and lush, effortless in its generosity and finesse and stimulatingly saline in its delicate and irresistible finish. The Merle never fails to sit among the very best releases of Clare Riesling, year after year, no matter what price bracket you quote. For me, this is one of our iconic Rieslings. The colour for this latest release is a near transparent lemon. The wine is elegant and refined, fresh and focused and offers drive, impeccable balance and endless length. A line of sea breeze acidity runs the length, the intensity never drops for a moment, and that freshness is still evident throughout. The 2024 The Merle Riesling is powerful and tightly controlled, with a long spool of flavor—lemongrass, white pepper, cheesecloth, bay leaf and scratched lime—that draws out over the finish.
