Faiveley Gevrey Lavaux St Jacques 2021 1erThe 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers one of my favourite bouquets from Faiveley in this vintage: open redcurrant and wild strawberry scents, touches of sous-bois and truffle, very expressive and charming. The palate is well balanced with finely-chiselled tannins, quite energetic, perhaps because compared to their Les Cazetiers, this was barely touched by the frost. Almost confit-like on the finish. Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee 2016The 2016 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is an elegant, sensual Champagne. In other words, classic Vilmart. Crushed flowers, mint, chalk, slate, dried herbs and citrus peel are all beautifully delineated. Brisk acids wrap it all together in style. The 2016 needs a few years to be at its most expressive, as it is pretty reserved today. Even so, all the elements are impeccably put together. The barrels used here are one to three years old. Notes of honeysuckle and lime blossoms, blood orange peel, anise and cardamom are a fragrant overtone heralding this fresh Champagne, which shows good tension and drive. The refined, chalky mousse is lacy in texture, buoying finely meshed flavors of ripe apricot and quince paste, raw almond, vanilla wafer and candied ginger. Ends with a long, mouthwatering finish. Hospices de Beaune Beaune Nicolas Rolin 2021 1erLike previous vintages this is on the darker side of the spectrum but the fruit remains upbeat and sappy in the mouth. Considerable tannins provide the framework while notes of spice, turned earth and a dusting of pepper waft from the glass. It is a little reserved at the moment, that’s to be expected, but the sumptuousness and creaminess of the very old vine fruit, the line of acidity that adds the fresh, sappy elements, those solid but beautifully formed tannins and bead of minerality that bursts through the palate, they all tell a story of a beautifully composed wine, raised by a master of his craft, that should develop wonderfully for at least a decade or so, probably much more. The final flush of florality and mineral laced fruit is enough to excite anyone who loves Burgundy.

The 2021 Pinot Noir The Haven Vineyard has closed a touch since I tasted it in early 2023, but it's still impressive and perfumed. From vines planted in 2001, it's expressive and detailed, unfurling scents of raspberry, blackberry, conifer forest, resinous herbs and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is effortlessly balanced, its concentrated flavors framed by silky tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, layered and spicy finish. 300 cases were made. Littorai Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 1500mL3 BOTTLES AVAIALABLE
The 2021 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard has tightened in bottle since I first tasted it in early 2023. From vines planted in 1991 and 1994, it opens with struck flint and takes plenty of time to unwind its pomegranate, rhubarb, licorice and bergamot aromas. The light-bodied palate reveals complex flavors, but it's youthfully coiled at this stage. It has a chiseled frame of chalky tannins and firm acidity and a long, citrus and tea leaf finish. It becomes more expressive as it opens in the glass and will reveal its full potential after several more years in bottle. 345 cases were made. (94+) ERIN BROOKS

Ornellaia 2021The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That's not at all the case with the 2021. Gabin et Felix Richoux Irancy Veaupessiot 2018Thierry embraces each vintage for its uniqueness, which makes for a lot of diversity between years. Veaupessiot, like the other Irancy wines in the range, when first opened can hold its cards close to the chest—2010, 2013 and 2015 vintages are exceptions. Like a great Nebbiolo wine, the initial resistance begins to soften with time open and all its noble qualities begin to unfold from the glass. They are a rustic, clean style of wine that with patience shows an array of specific noble complexities unique to this place. Veaupessiot is the most elegant and brightly aromatic than the other lieux-dits bottlings, Les Cailles and La Palotte. Spot on aromatics of cherry inlaid with a hint of Asian spice and blue flowers. The palate gives an immediate sweet fruit attack and quickly settles into a medium-bodied frame. Gentle and flowing rather than a wall of flavour and extract, this Bourgogne shows real earthen terroir characters backed by lovely purity of fruit. Great example of Bourgogne from this Pernand domaine. Lovely crisp, bright, crunchy fruit. Great purity but there is also a freshness and acidity which makes you want to drink more. Not at all hefty but lifted, delicate and showing so much finesse. Well worth considering this for your ‘drinking’ Pinot. Onannon Tuerong Robinson Pinot Noir 2022A savoury and brooding wine with dark red fruits wrapped in woodsy, herbal spice. It's earthy in that forest floor after rain type of way with plenty of wholebunch giving sinew to it's frame and a distinctive savoury injection. Onannon Main Ridge Tudibaring Pinot Noir 2022So pretty and appealing thanks to its up-front red cherries and spice flavours. At first quite fruit-sweet, then other elements come into play: tangy, tart, pomegranate-like acidity, a touch of menthol. The oak is oh-so-subtle, adding some background nuances to the lighter-framed palate with lacy tannins. This is lovely. Onannon Red Hill Harrisons Road Pinot Noir 2022There’s plenty of whole bunch character, though the fruit here is up to the task. Dark raspberry, cherry, peppery and spicy, cardamom pod perfume, with a little toasty oak. Good flavour, density and weight, a dry grip to tannin with the graphite character of whole bunch as a positive, and the finish is long and firm. Nicely done. Very good wine. Hurley Hommage Pinot Noir 2022Homage faces north-east, is the smallest of the vineyards, was planted from cuttings taken from Main Ridge Estate, and – important on the Peninsula – is the most sheltered of the vineyards.
This release is better than excellent. It’s elegant and fine-boned but it has genuine power, most of the latter formed, assembled and employed through the back half of the palate and out through the finish. It’s a Pinot Noir for lovers of Pinot Noir. It’s modestly sweet-sour but it’s silken and cohesive, its black cherry, meat, toast and floral elements singing as one. This is my favourite of the 2022 Hurley Vineyards pinots; they’re all good, but this for me is the most complete. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Hurley Lodestone Pinot Noir 2022Lodestone is north-facing and the warmest of the three sites. But it’s planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 (along with some MV6), and the soils the vines are planted in are rockier. (The Hurley Vineyard is currently for sale, if anyone is interested.)
This is an excellent release. Taut, perfumed, meaty in essence but pretty at the same time. Floral. Its tastes of game, black cherries and strawberries-dipped-in-chocolate, the latter of which makes it sound ‘sweet’ but it’s not; there are so many earth/spice/smoke/meat characters here that it largely comes across as savoury. Escarpment Pinot Noir 2021The 2021 Pinot Noir is svelte and balanced; it's really settled into itself now at two years post-harvest. There's a nice, fleshy green parsley note on the nose. The fruit tastes ripe and fleshy and feels it in the mouth too. Nice mineral acidity shapes the wine and keeps it alive in the mouth. This is super pleasurable drinking here. There are pomegranate pearls and pink peppercorns. There is energy here. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
This is composed of 61.5% Te Muna Road Vineyard, with the balance from in town. It was plunged once daily and spent 20 days on the skins. Aging was in 22% new oak for 11 months, with a further nine months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. ERIN LARKIN, The Wine Advocate

Escarpment Pahi Pinot Noir 2021The 2021 Pahi Pinot Noir has a gorgeous nose that's totally expressive and pure in its outlay of aroma, with Pink Lady apples, pomegranate pearls, layers of red cherry, white strawberry, star anise, a hint of arnica/mint and a ripple of sumac and blood orange/ginger spice through the finish. Superb, gorgeous with lovely energy. The nose is laced with freshly turned red earth, which is crazy because there is no "freshly turned red earth" in the vineyard, yet it is ferruginous, iodine-y, etc., which carries through all the 2021 single-vineyard Pinots. Tannins are silky. With 58% whole bunch, there's "big bunch energy," joked winemaker Tim Bourne. I agree.13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
Pahi tends to have a lifted perfume—"'Te Muna Road perfume' we call that," says Tim. Grapes were picked on April 3 and spent 25 days on skins. Clone 5 and Abel were used. Aging was in 25% new oak for 20 months, racked once, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. (95) ERIN LARKIN,. The Wine Advocate
An enticing fragrance of fresh dark cherries and dried herbs, plum and sweet wood with a light smoke touch. There’s a gentle perfume and floral frame. On the palate firm touch with a core of ripe dark berried fruits for contrast. There’s some subtle power with tannins and acidity framing the wine nicely and a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Firm and dry, lengthy and well made, I feel this wine needs some cellar time to complete its harmony. Best drinking from 2025 through 2032+. Domaine Rapet Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru 2022The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a notably perfumed bouquet with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, wild heather and touches of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious, with a fine bead of acidity and a degree of precision on the finish that does the appellation proud. A notably earthier nose combines notes of red currant, dark pinot and a whiff of the sauvage. There is markedly better volume to the delicious and more complex medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic and more structured finale. Sandhi Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2021The 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills has a medium ruby color and pretty scents of cinnamon stick, aniseed, iron, underbrush and charcuterie with a core of red cherries and cranberries. Medium-bodied yet very concentrated, it has a powdery frame, sparks of refreshing acidity and a very long, graphite-driven finish. There is a lovely smokey cedary thing going on here, its really inviting giving the pure red fruits and soft sweet spices a lovely counterpoint. A touch of darky cherry and a little wild strawberry as well. That smoky things continues on the palate with combo of black and red forest fruits to the fore and a little garrigue like finish that close it out.
