  1. William Fevre Chablis 2022
    William Fevre Chablis 2022

FIVE STARS - To bottle in November. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. Drink from 2025-2030 JASPER MORRIS MW

TOP VALUE - There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit. There is also slightly better volume and richness to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a refreshing, clean, dry and sleek finale. This is very good for its level plus it should reward a few years of keeping if desired. BURGHOUND

Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age. DECANTER

    Giant Steps Sexton Chardonnay 2023
Right now, this is the most salivating and seductive of Giant Step's superb array of single-vineyard chardonnays from '23. Perfectly ripened white peach, pear and some marine scents lead onto the palate, which is gently textured, saline and structured. The finish is energetic, nutty and long. Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Chardonnay 2023
Before I tell you that Bruce Dukes' career has spanned over 3 decades and that he's had years of experience both locally and abroad, it's likely a good idea to start at the finish: Bruce Dukes is wholly talented, and while he makes high-quality acclaimed wines for his own estate - Domaine Naturaliste - he also does this for a raft of other, smaller producers in Margaret River and Geographe. His winemaking style is one of fresh, pure fruit over obvious or intrusive winemaking artifact, and the wines routinely possess a polish and eminent drinkability. ERIN LARKIN

Aromas of crushed stones, lemon peel, sliced pink grapefruit and subtle ground spice. Medium-bodied with a lot of pleasant white tea character. Jasmine and leafy herbs come through. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Tasting with Bruce is a pretty remarkable experience. The guy knows his business and he knows he is getting things done, better than most. He is a crazy character though. You have to strap in and get ready for the ride. He runs from jovial and humorous through to intense and stern. Kind of like his wines. Some of them are driven, intense and focused things, some are a little more uplifting and joyous. This one definitely sits somewhere in the middle and we love it!

  5. Walsh & Sons Hamish Chardonnay 2023
Walsh & Sons Hamish Chardonnay 2023

Named for Hamish David Walsh, and as it happens, my brother is David Arthur Walsh. A blend of Burnside Chardonnay (raised in anfora) and Osmington (three year old oak).

Well, this is a wild one for sure. It’s kind of sweaty and clove spiced, oyster shell, white mushroom, lime and cape gooseberry. It’s saline and savoury, powdery and dusty in texture, some cashew cream in the mix, with a curry leaf finish of good length. It’s kind of dirty, and yet, I find it strangely compelling. Hard to rate, interesting to drink! GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Walsh & Sons Roi Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Bright, medium-deep purple colour; raspberry and dried-herb aromas, mild varietal character, some meaty barrel-derived nuances. Soft, medium full-bodied palate with a wash of powdery tannins, better with food but a very good early-drinking cabernet with some depth and structure. HUONE HOOKE, The Real Review

Palliser Estate Om Santi Chardonnay 2022
This is an exercise in power and balance. It's off the 100% organic Om Santi vineyard utilising clones 15 and 95. It has lovely length and mouth-feel, with a really fine line of acidity running through it. The flavours are full and focused, with a core of nectarine, grapefruit, nougat and a tingly, tangy minerality. A very classy chardonnay indeed. (96) AARON BRASHER, The Real Review

Concentrated chardonnay with purity and power. White peach, nectarine, citrus flavours contrast tantalisingly with spicy oak and saline/oyster shell flavours. The Macon-Villages comes off old vines that are located in the parcel called "Les Sertaux", in the village of Bussiere. Defintely a punch above here with that lovely expansive fruit of the 2022 vintage counterd by some zingy acidity. Its peppy but with a lovely generosity too. Lovely little wine.

Saumaize-Michelin Pouilly Fuisse Clos Sur la Roches 2022 1er
The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche 1er Cru has a backward and more austere bouquet compared to the preceding Vieilles Vignes, opening with aeration, the 20% new oak neatly integrated. There is a light Crustacea scent underneath the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a subtle pepperiness on the entry, very elegant in style, building gently towards a lively, persistent finish. Elanto Balnarring Chardonnay 2023
Fantastic intensity of flavour matched to fantastic length. This is a chardonnay for lovers of chardonnay. There's cedarwood oak in play, and a kind of nutty-creaminess too, but it's the blaze of pear, white peach, grapefruit and steel that really woos. Citrussy acidity teams with the pear characters to give the wine an air of juicy refreshment, but everything is in the context of flavour, bold and delicious. This is an exceptional first release, and a truly beautiful wine. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

Flavour and flinty minerals ride shotgun in this delicious chardonnay, with a kiss of spicy French oak to elevate. Nectarines, nougat and fennel flavours flesh out the palate while the volcanic soils inject a minerally cage of phenolics. It alludes to decadence at a great price point - there's a lot to love here. Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 25% mlf. A very bright green gold. Attractive scents of ripe white pears and nectarines, lemon curd and just the right amount of flint. Packs a punch on the saline, gently textured, gently chewy palate. Great stuff and the perfect entrée to the year's superb lineup of single-vineyard chardonnays. (95) PHILIP RICH, wine companion

Honeycrisp apple skin, lemon zest and green plum. Winter melon and starfruit. Plumes of talc powder, pomice and honeysuckle. Plenty of white delicate florals and a blush of nectarine. Intoxicating acidity and a kefir creaminess on the finish. A spray of saline and oak appears in its round shapes rather than toasty notes. Alive with energy and creeping unsuspecting power. Drinking well now and will cellar 3-5 years, a great wine for the bite of calamari or richness of abalone. (95) SHANTEH WALE, wine pilot

  16. Wynns John Riddoch 2021
    Wynns John Riddoch 2021
Very deep, dark, impenetrable purple colour; a gorgeous fragrance of spicy superripe berries and a hint of licorice, super concentrated and almost essency. Traces of soy sauce and nori. The wine is highly concentrated on the palate; powerful, profound and rich, with masses of sweetly ripe berry fruit and no sign of herbal varietal touches. A profound and multi-dimensional cabernet that will richly reward long-term cellaring. It drinks superbly already but it would be sacrilege to open it before it's had more time to build the tertiary complexity that we know will come with time. (99) HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (98) ERIN LARKIN, wineadvocate.com

One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. (98) RAY JORDAN, rayjordan.com.au

"In one word - 'epic'.  Having just returned from ten days in Bordeaux tasting a vast number of youthful Cabernets, among other styles of wine, if this beauty had been slipped into the mix, it would have lounged somewhere near the top of the pile…John Riddoch is more akin to an elite Saint-Estèphe than a typical New World Cabernet…'21 JR is pure, stunningly plush, deeply fruited but seemingly weightless and incredibly detailed. It is a superb thoroughbred with impeccable balance, and it is as relevant for an old-world geek as it is for a new-world disciple. It is time that Wynns John Riddoch sat alongside the acknowledged world Cabernet greats, and this vintage will undoubtedly help make this dream a reality. (19.5/20) MATTHEW JUKE

Christian Moreau Chablis Vaillons 2023 1er
From 3.8 ha of 30 to 70+ y.o. vines with a south, south-east exposure. Hand harvest, natural yeast ferment and aged 2/3rd’s in tank and 1/3rd in barrique for 6-8 months. This wine in recent years is showing even greater definition and class. Is it from the organic viticulture, new tanks and equipment giving sharper focus, or now that Fabien has nearly 20 vintages of experience in creating what has become one of the most seamless and perfectly formed 1er cru Chablis’ to come from this appellation. You be the judge, but be quick as this is always the first to sell out. DAVID BURKITT

This is also aromatically cool and almost as reticent with its airy aromas of white pepper, mineral reduction, essence of pear and a suggestion of wood influence. The gorgeously textured medium weight flavors possess an even more developed sense of refinement while exhibiting fine length on the quinine, stony and bitter lemon zest-suffused finale. This is lovely and a Vaillons of finesse in 2022. BURGHOUND

Once again there is a certain coolness to the otherwise ripe aromas of apple, pear, sea breeze and quinine along with a similar touch of wood influence. The succulent and unusually rich middleweight flavors are also nicely refined while flashing a bead of minerality on the balanced and lilting finale BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - A similar style to the Vaillons but with extra impact. Ooh - extra volume balanced with some fluidity. Then there's a twist of finishing intensity - you can sense a little oak today - average 5-year-old barrels - a mix of 228s and 350s. Wait 2 years and the oak will be gone - that's a great wine. William Fevre Chablis Fourchaume 2022 1er
WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - The classic, almost fizz of golden-yellow citrus - very inviting. Really vibrant in the mouth - such energy. A wine that directs you into its vibrant finish but holds you there with super length. Ultra classy, possibly a great Fourchaume! BILL NANSON

The domaine's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume, a parcel selection in Vaulorent, opens in the glass with notes of sweet citrus fruit, white flowers and oyster shell, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy palate that's cool and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. 21. William Fevre Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er
William Fevre Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 2022 1er

FIVE STARS - From multiple plots: east facing kimmeridgian marl in Pied d'Aloue (0.50ha), one hectare in Chapelot, (more soil here, fatter wine), then the rest in Bréchain, where vines dating back to 1936, give tension. What a beautiful bouquet. This has the sensual aspect of a delightful sunny summer, yet with an entrancing freshness behind. This is quintessential right bank (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

SWEET SPOT - An elegant, pure and wonderfully airy nose more freely reflects its aromas of white flowers, prominent mineral reduction and plenty of seashore elements. There is at once more volume but, somewhat surprisingly, even better refinement to the medium weight plus flavors that retain excellent detail while also flashing an almost pungent stoniness on the driving, firm and impeccably well-balanced finale. One to look for as this is very impressive. BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - Deep, wide - structural wine, less of the fruit - a great invitation. A more direct wine of citrus energy, chalky almost. Less large vs the Fourchaume but more in all other directions - beautiful, saline finishing wine. Yes! BILL NANSON

  22. William Fevre Chablis Vaulorent 2022 1er
William Fevre Chablis Vaulorent 2022 1er

SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING - A much less expressive nose, indeed it is all but mute, requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus blossom and seawater. The richer and slightly more powerful flavors also possess a sophisticated mouthfeel along with excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. In a word, terrific. BURGHOUND

Fèvre has 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Tight and tense, lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. GIve this five years and it will be stunning. (96) ANDY HOWARD MW, Decanter

2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, a cuvée where Didier Séguier permits himself the the luxury of using only Fèvre's best old-vine parcels and which is always one of the high points of the range. Wafting from the glass with notes of citrus oil, oyster liquor, white flowers and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. (95) WILLIAM KELLEY

The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montée de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. NEAL MARTIN

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - A wonderful, more vertical nose - what depth and minerality at the base. Extra CO2 here today. More overtly mineral, none of the golden fruit of the Fourchaume - really alive and energetic wine - and I love it - bravo! BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

More lime than lemon in colour, the nose is so stylish yet with obvious concentration beneath. I love the texture of this wine, which has taken on a little bit of the cashmere qualities of this sector, while nonetheless retaining its mineral core. Very stylish once again. (95) JASPER MORRIS MW

DON'T MISS - A toasty nose features notes of smoky grilled shellfish, pear and algae. The dense and equally serious larger-scaled flavors don't have quite the same power yet they are clearly more refined on the markedly bitter citrus zest finish that displays outstanding length. This is exceptionally classy and while it too could use more depth, that is all but assured if given a chance. BURGHOUND

Open, almost delicate aromatics. Supple, concentrated - but with a large growth of great flavour, lots of salinity, ultra complex and large finishing. This is a baby, I think there's much more to come. BILL NANSON

William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots 2022

FIVE STARS - A glowing pale lemon and lime. Sunny and fresh at the same time, with an extraordinary tension on the nose. Still a wine of discretion, Didier has made wines which completely avoid heaviness while still delivering all that is necessary in concentration and backbone. Sublime persistence. (97) JASPER MORRIS MW

DON'T MISS - This is the coolest and most restrained of this group of 2022s with its elegant aromas of prominent mineral reduction, lemon-lime, spice and oyster shell. There is almost painful intensity to the intensely stony and strikingly well-detailed larger-bodied yet still beautifully refined flavors that display huge length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Preuses, this is very classy and built to repay extended keeping. BURGHOUND

William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2022

FIVE STARS - Mostly from old vines, a good half planted between 1948 and 1952. Translucent lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is not ready to unfurl yet there is a sense of sublime purity about the nose. A wine in perfect harmony on its wide bench of white fruit. Just a little touch of spice behind, good acidity. Sign up for this! (98) JASPER MORRIS MW

DON'T MISS - This is aromatically quite similar to the Côte Bouguerots but with more floral influence. The rich, big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors are also seemingly chiseled from Kimmeridgian, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent, very dry, balanced and stony finale. This is also extremely impressive and equally built to repay extended cellaring. BURGHOUND

WORTH A SPECIAL SEARCH - mainly planted before 1950 by that father of William Fevre. Always the only wine in this - or pretty much any line-up of great Chablis that makes me think - Chevalier-Montrachet! A more alive and zesty aromatic from this - almost 2021 in style. Plenty of gas you must wait for it to fade. Here's a wine with (almost!) the density of Preuses but the fluidity of the Bouguerots. A haunting finish that holds impressive intensity. Properly grand and still far from the finished article - Grand Vin for sure! BILL NANSON

The 2018 Brut Blanc de Blancs is a blend of fruit from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, six villages in the Côte des Blancs. Crushed rocks, mint, slate, lemon peel and green pear lend notable freshness. Like most wines in this vintage, the Blanc de Blancs is airy and medium-bodied in structure, but it shows lovely tension and fine balance. There's plenty of Delamotte class, in an understated style. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The Delamotte 2018 Blanc de Blancs is showing well today, evoking a gourmand, complex bouquet of pastry, almonds, ripe orchard fruits, spices and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and chiseled, it’s enveloping and round with a fleshy core of fruit, though not as fleshy as the 2012, concluding with a tense and long finish. Louis Michel Chablis 2023

The quite strict 2023 Chablis Village offers Granny Smith and orange rind on the nose, with light mango scents emerging with aeration. The palate is taut and fresh with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish. Drink over 4-5 years. NEAL MARTIN, Vinous

The grapes come from eight different areas, which are mainly located on the left bank of the Serein river, Pargues in the Forêts valley, and Vaillons. They are blended with the parcel located just below the Montée de Tonnerre, to create this authentic Chablis. No added yeast, long fermentation using indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled vats. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

Mac Forbes Little Yarra 'Gladysdale' Chardonnay 2021

From a vineyard planted in Gladysdale in '09. Matured in seasoned barriques. My pick of the '21 single-vineyard chardonnays, this has a complex bouquet of just-picked nectarines, white flowers and oyster shells. The palate is nicely balanced, with good weight and concentration. It's also chalky textured, saline and long. And, like Mac Forbes' single-vineyard wines, in particular, it's been built to last. (96) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Petite Yarra. AOC? Clay with mudstone and dry-farmed vines.

It glides. With a silky texture, lightly yoghurty core and a chalky, citrusy finish. Quite light on its feet with blanched almonds, crisp green apple, just a hint of crunchy white nectarine as it’s mostly citrus driven. All fresh, smooth and minerally. She’s pretty. Floral with notes of white flowers, elderflower and concentrated fruit, Fresh picked nectarines, sweet chamomile, nashi pear, quince and citrus rind. There’s an abundance of bound ripe fruit, Anjou pear, yellow peaches, red apple skins and citrus curd. Fresh acidity and gentle phenolics envelope around the rich fruit core of the wine. It’s elegant in style, showing a fresh and clean finish. The wine is supported by mineral characters of crushed seashells and coastal salinity that are, for the time being, gently hidden beneath the rich fruit power of the wine, waiting patiently to expand as the wine evolves in the bottle. A very good vintage for Chardonnay in Margaret River.

This is a fine-boned and fairly lean expression of MR Chardonnay, and I’m trying to decide if it’s just a bit too lean, or just a cooler style. It’s floral, white fruit and grapefruit, a firm kiss of ginger oak, which subsides with some airing, and slight struck match. It has some sour yoghourt in with white fruit and citrus, almond too, a pleasing chalk dust texture, and a bright finish of good length and tangy citrus zip. Nice wine. Lively. I’d like a bit more substance in the middle, though others may find the light touch just the ticket. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

    Domaine Naturaliste Purus Chardonnay 2023

Feeling tired and sluggish? A glass of this pure, racy Purus will bring spark back into your life. It’s more than the refreshing acidity, which is moreish and energising, there’s a light film of citrus and white stone fruit, a little spice, a very fine layering of texture and oak. Superb balance and length. Love it. (96) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Bright and lively in the glass. Lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, just-ripe white stone fruit, white flowers, mineral and nutty oak. Concentrated, fine and balanced in flavour. Peach, nectarine, citrus and crunchy acidity are all at play. The finish is dry and grippy and the length is impressive. Tightly wound at the moment and will benefit from cellaring. AARON BRASHER, The Real Review

Purus. Karridale. Dijon clones 76, 95 and clone 5. 40% new oak.

White peach, grapefruit, spicy clove and ginger oak, green olive and fennel, white flowers. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. It’s shelly and maybe sits on the cusp of ripeness, though it does have energy, and, I feel a bit of upside given a few more years in bottle. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  36. Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 2007
Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 2007
The 2007 Brut Blanc de Blancs Blanc des Millénaires is the seventh opus of this vintage after the 1983, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2004 and 2006 vintages. This 100% Chardonnay exhales aromas of candied lemon, lemon oil, spring flowers, ripe orchard fruits and hints of pastry. The palate is coated and fleshy, rich and dense, with racy acids and a chalky, penetrating finish. Hide bottles for seven to eight years. (95+) YOHAN CASTAING, The Wine Advocate

“The nose is very subtle, has glimpses of oyster shell and lemon. The palate is taut, bright, super-fresh, linear, lemony and just incredibly youthful. There is a vein on ripe, lemony freshness that pervades this wine, that sets the tone, that defines its character. This is intense, insistent, urgent, yet also gentle and smooth with very fine mousse. A wonderful and most compelling personality. Exquisite. The finish is a serene stretch of lemony, chalky, profound freshness. Drink now or keep. Will evolve. (98) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

100% Chardonnay from Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Vertus. The new Blanc des Millénaires presents the very best of the 2007 vintage, one that shows an intense, bristling kind of energy for Chardonnay. A compressed, tight core of chalky, pure flavours – green plum, charred peel, white flowers – with a lick of sea salt. Tasted again in November 2022, this cuvée showed richer sourdough and butter profile, suggesting it is opening up fairly obligingly. Much more focus than the 2006, yet more attitude than the serenely attractive 2004. TOM HEWSON, TimAtkin.com

Voyager Estate The Modern Cabernet 2021

First poured, a ghastly apparition appeared – as if this had been placed in a corset and cinched tight. In a vinous sense, that means decanting or letting this beauty breathe in the glass. It has all the varietal appeal of Margs: its shapely tannins, supple and ever-so-slightly grainy and its savouriness. Very little oak impact (15% new French barriques), other than offering a complementary light seasoning of cedary spices. 95 JANE FAULKNER, wine companion

Fruit from a 1996-planted vineyard. Four weeks post-fermentation maceration, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. Virtually identical winemaking to the Original Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but, as always, this is the denser, more powerful and structured wine. On the nose there's a core of perfectly ripened black fruits, crushed violets, dark chocolate and graphite. The medium bodied, firmly structured and persistent palate is equally good, and anyone fortunate enough to still have a bottle 10–15 years (if not longer) from now will be well rewarded. 97 PHILIP RICH, wine companion

Oakridge LVS Barkala Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

From one of the few cabernet vineyards in the Upper Yarra; planted at 240m elevation in Wandin East. Matured in French barriques (30% new) for 15 months. A medium crimson purple. Perfectly ripened cabernet fruit exhibiting aromas of dark cherry, violets, a little bramble and some complexing bell pepper. Medium bodied and compact, the fruit has swallowed up the oak and while it's a touch firm once it fleshes out a little (and it will) this should provide considerable pleasure for a decade or so. 95 PHILIP RICH, wine companion

There’s a brashness of youth on show, with plumped-up, slightly raspy tannins, cedary oak and cigar smoke, too. This needs more time to amalgamate, and it will as the foundation is solid; cassis, brambleberries, leafy freshness and woodsy spices fill out the full-bodied palate. JANE FAULKNER

One of the best chardonnays yet under this label. But you expect that with mature vineyards, a great vintage and continually refined winemaking. Opens with a slightly savoury cashew aromatic, which is intense and immediately engaging. The palate is deep and multi-layered. Explosive and powerful, it extends with real purpose to a long though still linear and defined finish. One of the best. (96) RAY JORDAN

I was out and about in Leichhardt today, which is surely one of the more difficult suburbs to spell, and decided to pretend I was a normal person and pop into a bottle shop. In this case, Vintage Cellars, and it’s invariably interesting to see what’s on the shelves. Anyway, my partner told me she’d tried this wine earlier in the week, and that it was good. So we bought a bottle.

Some struck match, grapefruit, lemon oil, light spicy oak and cashew, honey florals, and fennel. Juicy but tight, with good intensity and flavour, though it’s still pretty light on its feet, a little nectarine and honeydew melon in with citrus, creamy cashew, light struck match, with a bright grapefruit tang on a finish of excellent length. A strong release of this wine, I think. (94) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Full red-purple; concentrated, ripe, cassis and blackberry fruit leaps from the glass, with oak present but trailing behind. The palate is as rich, ripe, succulent and concentrated as the bouquet suggests, redolent with cassis, and long, lingering tannins. (97) JAMES HALLIDAY

  48. Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023
    Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023
A wine that starts with a whisper and ends in a crescendo. A little flint, lemon oil and spice act as a quiet introduction before the wine expands in your mouth. This is a wine that's all about texture, first enveloping your palate with its silken caress before it's drawn in and funneled to the finish with a lovely chalky embrace. There's a distinctive gin and tonic character, salty pink grapefruit, a little white peach and a subtle herbal seasoning. The oak is there, but not leading the conversation, as little influence as I can remember seeing in this wine. It's still a little embyronic at this early stage of it's life but as is the case with Heytesbury a little time is needed to draw out the full bow. A wine of such class and quiet confidence. Among the greatest I have tried this year from our shores. ALEX DOBSON, PWS
