Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir 2024Red fruit, cherry, a little earthy, with some cinnamon oak showing, and sarsaparilla. It’s a more fruity and bouncy expression of Hoddles Pinot, some grainy chew to tannin, a bit of sap and orange rind, something of a ferrous edge, with a stiff tannic finish of good length. The Brut Etoile is produced much like Champagne, and spends a year of its life aging in the winery's 15 km of underground tunnels which are the remains of an ancient stone quarry. It is a clean and fruity sparkling wine that shows notes of honey and peach on the nose and is complemented by minerality on the palate and a dry, persistent finish. Bodega Barrero Gabriela Manzanilla 375mlI love Manzanilla, and I often drink it when I’m out and about… Salty, nutty, chamomile, sourdough bread before it hits the oven, a light honey and mint thing too, lemon zest and green olives. It’s dry and nutty, distinctly saline, fine chalky texture, green olive brine and pistachio, with a tangy, zesty and nutty finish of excellent length. It’s fresh and sharp, (as it should be), but also a little wild, and gee, it’s a very good expression of Manzanilla. The crunch on the finish seals it. Yes. Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2024Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s packed with flavour, white nectarine and nutty spicy characters, a flinty grip to texture, quite some intensity and power here, and in some respects it seems more Beechworth than Yarra, or so I think. Pear and citrus, lime rind, with excellent length of flavour. It’s elemental as at now, and a little raw, though I reckon it will deliver with a couple of years in bottle. It’s a cracking release. Holm Oak Protege Pinot Noir 2024like this style of pinot. Built for drinkin' not thinkin' and one which will take a chill in the fridge should the mercury dictate such an action. This sparkling Burgundy (not to be confused with the old term for Aussie sparkling red) is made entirely from Chardonnay and, honestly, it's a mystery as to how something this good comes at this price. The wine is produced by an estate which is over 100 years old, from premium vineyards and spent 9 months in bottle developing a gentle complexity before release. Light, crisp and fun, it's a fizz which won't break the bank and seriously over delivers.
OK so its not the usual Champs-Élysées finish and this stage isn't even the finish line but we have to have a sparkling at some point. Curatolo Arini Dolce NVNow this is a Sicilian, family-run winery, and while we might make wry obs when we put the word ‘Sicilian’ together with the word ‘family’, and given that not too far inland is the town of Corleone… the real family story here is the remarkable and durable legacy of the founder, Vittorio Curatolo Arini. In 1875 ‘Vito’ decided to add Arini to his name in order to stand out, as he was about to embark on quite the gamble for a young man. Vito, a generational grape grower, founded his Marsala business by persuading the bank to support his proposal to build a full-on winery amidst the family vineyards on the outskirts of Marsala. Right from the start, Vito did things with care and style, including simpatico building design (rather than merely functional), signalling his serious intentions, and laying the foundations for today’s business. It is pale in colour with plenty of bubbles showing aromas of apples and pears, toasty bread and white flowers balancing the right amount of bubbles and acid. Eric Bordelet Sydre Brut Tendre Apple Cider NVThe biodynamic orchards are comprised of trees upto 50+ years old containing 40-50 varieties of heirloom apples. The hand-harvested fruit is dehydrated for 4-5 weeks and simply ground and pressed then settled for clarification before fermenting naturally, originating in tank and finishing in bottle. Bubbles develop within two weeks of bottling. It has lovely aromatics of graham and baked apple, followed by elegant bubbles and an off-dry profile on the palate.

Bondar Fiano 2024SPECIAL BUY - This comes from two sites owned and farmed by Ben Lacey, in Aldinga and Seaview. Mainly steel. Pressed firmly but with no sulphur, dropping out harsh phenolics and keeping finer ones. The result is a wine of startling clarity and purity, effortless in the way it unfurls pear and lemon notes scented with orchard blossom, soft herbs and sea spray. The palate, too, has this unforced quality, with subtle, thoughtful detail – it’s a Bondar thing. There’s acid tension, texture, ultrafine savoury pithiness and a soaringly long trail of fresh flavour. For me, it’s their best yet.
