  2. Larmandier Bernier Latitude Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs NV
Larmandier Bernier Latitude Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs NV
Based on the 2020 vintage and disgorged this year with three grams per liter dosage, the latest NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude delivers aromas of crisp stone fruits, citrus oil, fresh herbs and warm bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and fleshy palate that's rich and generous in profile. As readers will remember, this cuvée takes its name from its provenance from parcels that share the same latitude: that's to say, the south of Vertus, which routinely delivers a sunnier, rounder style. 3. Coursodon St Joseph L'Olivaie 2020
    Coursodon St Joseph L'Olivaie 2020

The 2020 Saint Joseph L'Olivaie comes from a parcel of 60-year-old vines. It's a winner, offering a rocking array of black and blue fruits, crushed stone, pepper, and flowers as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. With plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish, it will give a top Hermitage a run for its money. JEB DUNNUCK

The medium to full-bodied 2020 Saint Joseph l'Olivaie, tasted out of barrel-the final blend will be roughly 50% from pièces de Bourgogne and 50% from demi-muids-showed an enthralling blend of raspberries and olives, a sexy, silky mouthfeel and great length and freshness on the finish. 4. Guigal St Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice 2019
Guigal St Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice 2019
Perennially among the best bottlings from the appellation, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice looks set to rival the tremendous effort bottled in 2015. Enticing scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis appear on the nose (it ages in 100% new oak), and while this full-bodied wine packs plenty of power, it also shows characteristic granite-derived restraint, delivering a tense balance between ripeness and structure. It should be a beauty, but give it time, as the tannins are prominent at this early stage of its evolution. JOE CZERWINSKI

Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau dAmpuis 2018
Lastly, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Château D'Ampuis is going to flirt with perfection and is about as classic Côte Rôtie as they come. Lots of cassis, graphite, spring flowers, vanilla, and game notes all give way to a full-bodied Côte Rôtie that's flawlessly balanced, has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This will be another stunning vintage for this wine that readers can find for a fraction of the cost of the top La Las. It's worth the money. (100) JEB DUNNUCK

  9. Duval Leroy Rose Prestige Brut NV
Duval Leroy Rose Prestige Brut NV
Pale orange. Smoky red berries, toasty lees and orange zest on the highly perfumed nose. Pliant, penetrating redcurrant and blood orange flavors are sweetened by a touch of honey and pick up smokiness with air. Deep but dry, even a bit uncompromising in a positive way. The red berry quality comes back on the finish, which shows very good clarity, lift and refreshing bitterness. JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous Media

  10. Henri Giraud Rose Dame Jane
    Henri Giraud Rose Dame Jane

Beginning with the striking, pale copper color, this is very unconventional rosé champagne. Wonderful fruit aromas that range from cherry and wild strawberry to persimmon and candied orange with a touch of sushi ginger. Then comes the mouth-filling and well-structured palate that has an amazing grainy-chalky feel to it, unlike anything else in this category. Very long, saline finish. A cuvée of pinot noir with a small amount of chardonnay that was vinified in amphoras. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The NV Dame-Jane is 100% Pinot Noir vinified and aged in amphora. Bright and light on its feet, the Dame-Jane is brisk and yet also shows quite a bit of depth. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, crushed rocks and hard candy all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Rosé. This release is based on 2019, with 40% reserve wines. 11. SC Pannell Koomilya DC Block Shiraz 2019
SC Pannell Koomilya DC Block Shiraz 2019
A very unique site tucked away between thatches of native forest and fringed by other old vine properties. The DC Block vines are 47 years old. There's 20% new oak employed here. A formidable and important project from Steve Pannell. The 2019 shiraz of McLaren Vale have a bit more dry reddiness as a thing, and there's some of that here, but the tannin and potency surpasses that.
It's highly perfumed, so rich and ripe, inky plummy fruit characters, brined black olive and a strong overlay of cedar, mahogany and clove. The palate is similarly generous and rich, plush and impenetrable, tightens on train tracks of cedary, firm and long ribbons of tannin and overall it feels succulent despite the heft and concentration. Formidable wine here, a quibble on how oak interplays in dryness with dryer spectrum fruit characters, but there's a hugely impressive wine in the glass regardless. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021
Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those. Captures the savoury and slightly dried herb characters of this variety with a regional ironstone ferrous influence. It’s medium boded and beautifully weighted with fine sinewy tannins and well managed oak harmonising perfectly. Beautiful.(96) RAY JORDAN, Wine Pilot

  13. Seville Dr McMahon Shiraz 2020
    Seville Dr McMahon Shiraz 2020
From the same single site as the Reserve (planted in 1971) but a vine-by-vine selection; 100% whole bunches, 100% barrel ferment and 100% new oak. A bright, medium crimson. Aromas of small red fruits, licorice root, graphite and pink peppercorns, while the new oak is beginning to integrate with the wine. There's an old vine intensity on the palate with the silkiest of tannins. Like all the Dr McMahon wines, it will take time for the hand of the winemaker to submerge into the wine, and for those with the patience and the pockets, it will be fascinating to follow its evolution. 50 dozen made. (97) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

I LOVE THIS! The fruit is so glossy and succulent. Aromas of baking spice and blood red plums waft from the glass with a little swirl of baking spices. Incense and something a little foresty, derived, I assume, from the interplay between the classy wood and those whole clusters, add complexity but also serve to quieten the wine down to a degree. It is a reserved and stately number that just misses out on being sombre because of the fresh and cool fruited profile of the palate. You can see all the pieces are in place and every element is doing it's job beautifully, but this is not a wine for the near term. I think it would be a shame to open one within five years from now and, honestly, probably a decade before it starts to really show its hand. Excellent and well worth having in your cellar. ROSCOE

The NV Hommage au Pinot Noir is silky, soft and accessible. 15. SC Pannell Koomilya GT Block Shiraz 2019
SC Pannell Koomilya GT Block Shiraz 2019
The old property is serviced with bio-char and layers in a lot of regenerative agriculture that aims to reintroduce lots of native species into the farm. The GT block is 31 year old vines grafted from gewurztraminer to shiraz, 'GT stands for grafted or gewurztraminer', says Steve Pannell in his press release, but I go to famed mid-to-late 90s DJ and music producer, GrooveTerminator, when I see the initials. Almost a third is whole bunch fermented here, and 20% new oak used. Also, this is beautiful drinking right now.
There's a freshness and lift to the wine despite the concentration and layering of dark fruit, woody spice and general inkiness. The character of gewurz seems omnipresent despite no gewurz here - it's floral and pretty shiraz, flirty and quite notably silky, more soft in the shiraz spectrum and red fruited inflections chime in with plum and dark, forest berry fruits. A lick of cola and char here but the wine floats and swishes on velvety tannins and finishes extremely long and fine. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

  16. Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021
Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021

One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.

While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.

  17. SC Pannell Koomilya JC Block Shiraz 2019
SC Pannell Koomilya JC Block Shiraz 2019
From near 50-year-old vines on the Koomilya property, a unique site in McLaren Vale in many respects, and for vigneron Steve Pannell a place of spirituality and significance for him personally. Many connections to the place. Farmed with kindness to the land in mind. The wine sees around 20% whole bunches in the ferment, spends time in only used oak barrels. The notable thing here is the tannin quality. Wow.
To stutter, the tannin quality; wow. Immediately impressive, the cinch and pucker, the length of fine, weaving, silty tannins and the cool acidity that supports the glide and gloss of the wine. Dark cherry, ripe plums, some mocha and ferrous elements with dried herb, paperbark tree and salt bush characters in the mix. Bouquet and palate in accord on these descriptions. It's concentrated but doesn't feel heavy or cumbersome, the palate resetting with each sip with only latent spice and dried cherry characters lingering. It feels distinctly 'Aussie red wine' but upper tier. What a superb wine. MIKE BENNIE, winefront.com

The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022
It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. It's ripe and robust, in a mid-weight way, but the real key here is that it's aflame with roasted spice/pepper notes. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winecompanion.com

  19. Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2020
Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz 2020
From a single site at Seville Estate planted in 1972; 20% whole bunches and matured in seasoned French puncheons. From a cool year, this was picked on the 1st week of April meaning the fruit had plenty of hang time. Just 120 dozen made. A brilliant crimson magenta. Beautifully perfumed and pure. Redolent of raspberry coulis, peony, Asian spices and potpourri. Supremely elegant and structured, there's a gentle meatiness to go with the pure red fruits. The tannins are silky and persistent. Finishes very long and too good to spit! (97) JAMES HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

In some ways this is similar to the Dr McMahon, which makes sense since the fruit source is the same, but it's more lively and unleashes more perfume and fruit. I would go so far as to say it has an almost airy feel to it, aromatically it's quite enticing, plenty of inviting little details that pluck at your senses. The palate eases in to things with ample weight, beautiful texture and pitch perfect tannins. It's long and edges towards vibrant with those cool edged fruit notes, but its dense enough to tell you there is a lot more to come here. What a glorious wine. In a sensational line up of booze this may be my pick of the bunch. ROSCOE

  23. Victoria Ordonez Camarolos tinto 2018
    Victoria Ordonez Camarolos tinto 2018
Wine has been part of Victoria Ordóñez’s life for as long as she can remember. Her father, José María Ordóñez, was a pioneer of the Spanish wine industry, distributing fine wines across the Province of Malaga since the ’50s. Although Victoria’s own professional career took off in a different direction – she studied to be a doctor and has a PhD in Medicine – in 2004 she decided to enter the wine business, initially combining it with her work as a health service administrator.
Victoria admits that she owes everything to the Austrian oenologist Alois Kracher, with whom she worked side by side making Málaga wines until his death in 2007. It was at this point that her career took a fresh turn as she decided to focus exclusively on what had become her passion – the world of wine.
Tasting: Bright red fruits, fennel, and other Mediterranean herbs, chocolate, and violet aromas. Maroon color and fine tannins lend a pleasing structure. Vibrant with red berries and spicy flavors, the wine is at once concentrated and fresh. Beautiful silkiness and great finesse with a very fresh finish.

  24. Laherte Freres Nature de Craie NV
Laherte Freres Nature de Craie NV

Disgorged April 2022. For a number of vintages, Aurélien Laherte has been experimenting with a sans soufre (zero sulphur) cuvée. In 2018 he cracked it with two barrels of Côte des Blancs juice, drawn from two Premier Cru terroirs in Vertus and Voipreux. Laherte noted that the key factors to the stability of vinifying in the absence of any additions were zero dosage and full malolactic conversion.
The third release of Laherte’s Nature de Craie is drawn from a single vintage (2020) drawn from parcels planted in 1960, 1965 and 1987. The word craie refers to the chalky soil of these terroirs, which lie on the lower slopes ensuring good exposure, in turn providing ripeness of fruit and no need for additional dosage. From hand-harvested and traditionally pressed fruit, this release was vinified in neutral oak barrels before aging on cork for 12 months. It was disgorged in April with no dosage. Bibendum

  30. Trinity Hill 'Homage' Syrah 2018
    Trinity Hill 'Homage' Syrah 2018
This is a complex and very intense syrah that offers a deeply ripe yet fresh and clear-cut impression of blackberry and pepper, with other layers of spice, graphite and gently meaty notes. The palate is silky yet powerful with really finely layered tannins that cast a long, evenly built finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. (98) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2018 Homage Syrah includes a mere 0.4% Viognier, yet it boasts distinct scents of stone fruit on the nose, backed by red and black raspberries and hints of peppermint. It's only medium-bodied, in line with the trend over the past few vintages toward less power and (presumably) more finesse. In this vintage, it comes off a bit lacking in richness on the palate, although the wine's complexity—marrying mixed berries, violets, spice and herb notes, plus hints of licorice and coffee—makes this still a very enjoyable drink. Give it another couple of years in the cellar and drink it over the following decade or so. JOE CZERWINSKI, The Wine Advocate

Ultra floral scents, strawberry too, whiffs of flint and wet stone, clove and cedar in tow. The palate is sinewy, lightly chewy, very long, finely wrapped in a web of firm, ribbons of tannin. 33. Beyond the Pines “Viceroy” Syrah 2021
Beyond the Pines “Viceroy” Syrah 2021

This is the 2nd release of the 'Viceroy' Syrah for young winemaker Matt Keoghan who has worked extensively locally and abroad to try and hone in his craft from places such as Hermitage, Barolo and ChateauNeuf Du Pape.

The vineyard from which these wines are made from are on the GI border of Mclarenvale (Clarendon) and Adelaide Hills from the Wind River Vineyard which is family owned and farmed. The soils are Buck Shot ironstones and quartz through Sandy loams on a light orange and red clay base. This leads to leaner alcohol wine and some slight reduction but almost pithy tannin and slurpee acidity.

The wines are more savoury than what is usually seen from the Adelaide Hills with great structural framing around a blue/black fruited palate. The lift from the hallmark whole bunch kiss, an almost mineral fresh finish, this wine is really letting the fruit speak rather than the winemaking, with elevage in neutral Hogs Heads and all Natural fermentation and minimal sulphur added prior to bottling.

  40. Frerejean Freres FJF 2012 Cuvée des Hussards
Frerejean Freres FJF 2012 Cuvée des Hussards

Named after the light cavalry of Napoléon Bonaparte, in which the soldiers were the first to use the art of sabring, the Cuvée des Hussards is powerful and expressive. This cuvee was elaborated from 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir coming from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards older than 40 years old. 2012 is regarded as the vintage of reference of the last decade.

"Pale and lively. Straight up the nose. Quite different from the wines so far. More lively and tense but good undertow. Fruit not oak expressed here. Racy with depth and undertow. Vibrant " 17/20 Jancis Robinson

  41. Gosset Grande Rose Brut NV
    Gosset Grande Rose Brut NV

(58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir; 3.5 g/l dosage; L329 9160): Light, orange-tinged pink. Lively spice- and mineral-accented red berry and citrus fruits on the nose, with a hint of cherry pit adding depth. Vibrant and precise on the palate, offering tangy, refreshingly bitter-edged blood orange and strawberry flavors. Clean, focused and stony on the dry, penetrating, persistent finish, which leaves a suave honeysuckle note behind. JOSH RAYNOLDS

  42. Champagne Hebrart Premier Cru Rosé Brut NV
Champagne Hebrart Premier Cru Rosé Brut NV

The NV Brut Rosé is flat-out delicious. The word 'balance' is so overused in wine, but I really can't think of a better way to describe the Brut Rosé. It is not nervy nor overly rich, but just impeccable in its poise and overall harmony. A healthy amount of Pinot lends volume and intensity to this Chardonnay-based Rosé. This is the sort of wine that is opened and disappears within a few minutes. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

  43. Champagne Jean Vesselle Extra Brut NV
Champagne Jean Vesselle Extra Brut NV
80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. In 1975 the domaine decided to introduce a ‘natural cuvée’, they didn't add the usual dosage. This resulted in a clear, lively Champagne that was ideal as an aperitif. At this time there were only three producers making this kind of Champagne, each had their own name for the wine: Brut 0, Brut Savage, and in the case of Jean Vesselle, Brut 100%. Today the wine - this wine - is named ‘Extra Brut’. It's very interesting considering the popularity of 'Extra Brut' and zero dosage wines today. It has the power and roundness of Pinot Noir with the drive and minerality of Chardonnay. French Wine Centre

  44. Laherte Freres Les Longues Voyes Blanc de Noirs 2018
Laherte Freres Les Longues Voyes Blanc de Noirs 2018

Disgorged December 2021. Les Longues Voyes translates as ‘the long way’, referring not only to the 25 kilometres that you need to travel from the Laherte estate to arrive at the vineyard, but also to the wine’s extended aging: 18 months in barrel and a further 18-20 months in bottle.

The fruit is sourced from a single hectare of biodynamic vines in Chamery, Montagne de Reims, owned by a good friend of Aurélien Laherte’s. The 35-year-old vines are rooted in clay and silts over a limestone base. The wine was made from a single four-tonne press of grapes, which was naturally fermented and matured in old Clos des Epeneaux and Leroux barrels. There was no malolactic conversion and the dosage was 4 g/L. Bibendum

  45. Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru 2015
Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru 2015
Since the Larmandiers felt they had picked a touch too early to produce their emblematic rosé in the 2015 vintage, they elected instead to produce the 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs, an attractively pillowy, racy, medium to full-bodied Champagne redolent of freshly baked bread, orchard fruit and buttery pastry. Concluding with a long, chalky finish, it represents a fine success. WILLIAM KELLEY

The 2015 Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru is a new wine in this range that emerges from the deeper clay soils found in the southern part of Vertus. A brawny, potent Champagne, the Blanc de Noirs is endowed with tons of depth and some angularity that needs time to soften. It will be interesting to see where this goes in more favorable years. Zero dosage. ANTONIO GALLONI

  46. Larmandier Bernier Rose de Saignee Brut 1er Cru NV
Larmandier Bernier Rose de Saignee Brut 1er Cru NV
Based on the 2019 vintage, the new NV Extra-Brut Rosé de Saignée is a rich, gastronomic wine, delivering aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with notions of kirsch, warm spices and petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with racy acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it's a vinous Champagne that would work well at table. WILLIAM KELLEY

  47. Lassalle Cuvee Special Club 2012
    Lassalle Cuvee Special Club 2012
The 2012 Brut Spécial Club is gorgeous. Radiant and expansive in the glass, the 2012 offers up a compelling mélange of dried pear, apricot spice, chamomile crushed flowers and almond. There’s lovely complexity and nuance, as well as captivating balance between the freshness that is such a house signature with the natural radiance of the year. The 2012 can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade, maybe more. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
