Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2021The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, precise and pure, lovely slate-driven bouquet with citric fruit and some cassis and gooseberry aromas. Crystalline, linear and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, lush and silky-textured, precise and almost sharp but also round and finely sweet Kabinett from the Himmelreich that shows red and black currant notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous Kabinett that has to be aged for 10-15 years. Sourced from 80-year-old vines on pure gray slate. Bottled with a spectacular total acidity of 12 grams per liter, but you don't feel the grams of acidity; and believe me, it's serious but balanced by extract and almost 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. This vineyard site is renowned for charming wines and this has some appley charm in the nose, but there’s also impressive depth and structure behind it. Laherte Freres Nature de Craie NVDisgorged April 2022. For a number of vintages, Aurélien Laherte has been experimenting with a sans soufre (zero sulphur) cuvée. In 2018 he cracked it with two barrels of Côte des Blancs juice, drawn from two Premier Cru terroirs in Vertus and Voipreux. Laherte noted that the key factors to the stability of vinifying in the absence of any additions were zero dosage and full malolactic conversion.
The third release of Laherte’s Nature de Craie is drawn from a single vintage (2020) drawn from parcels planted in 1960, 1965 and 1987. The word craie refers to the chalky soil of these terroirs, which lie on the lower slopes ensuring good exposure, in turn providing ripeness of fruit and no need for additional dosage. From hand-harvested and traditionally pressed fruit, this release was vinified in neutral oak barrels before aging on cork for 12 months. It was disgorged in April with no dosage. Mouzon Leroux L'ascendant Solera NVDisgorged in March 2021 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, Mouzon's latest NV Extra-Brut L'ascendant Solera is based on the 2016 vintage, complemented by 50% reserve wines drawn from a solera established in 2010. Exhibiting aromas of citrus oil, crisp green orchard fruit, nashi pear, macadamia nuts and nougat, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and fleshy, with fine depth at the core, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. Fio 'Piu Piu' Riesling Pet Nat NV 750ml100% Riesling using native yeast fermentation 50% in stainless, 50% in a mix of Fuder and Doppelfuder from the 1940s & 1960s. A pét nat made from Riesling, but from multiple vintages. Wines are stored in the coldest part of the cellars then blended as needed and moved to warmer areas to encourage secondary fermentation.

Armand de Brignac Gold NVTasted from magnum (the 750-milliliter bottle costs $285), the NV Brut (Gold) opens with lovely matured brioche, toast and ripe fruit flavors. Fresh, pure and elegant on the palate, with beautifully matured flavors and an elegant creaminess I don't find in the other cuvées, the "Gold" is a blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier as well as the vintages of 2009, 2010 and 2012. The back label promises this is peu dose (lightly dosed with sugar) but actually it tastes pretty ripe and full to me before tightening up like a lemon mousse on the finish. Ambitious. Laherte Freres Les Longues Voyes Blanc de Noirs 2018Disgorged December 2021. Les Longues Voyes translates as ‘the long way’, referring not only to the 25 kilometres that you need to travel from the Laherte estate to arrive at the vineyard, but also to the wine’s extended aging: 18 months in barrel and a further 18-20 months in bottle.
The fruit is sourced from a single hectare of biodynamic vines in Chamery, Montagne de Reims, owned by a good friend of Aurélien Laherte’s. The 35-year-old vines are rooted in clay and silts over a limestone base. The wine was made from a single four-tonne press of grapes, which was naturally fermented and matured in old Clos des Epeneaux and Leroux barrels. There was no malolactic conversion and the dosage was 4 g/L. Bibendum
