Leclerc Briant Millésime Extra Brut 2018
Full-bodied, it has a lush and pillowy mousse and a fantastic texture, filling the palate with ample fruit, a chalky texture, and a rounded and fleshy personality. Although, at first, it feels as if its oak is not well-integrated, it impresses me more as it opens and is approachable in its ripe fruit now. It’s long on the palate and is a very well-made wine, but I’d like to see how this harmonizes over time. AUDREY FRICK, Jebdunnuck.com

  5. Louis Roederer Cristal 2015
    Louis Roederer Cristal 2015
If the 2014 vintage was especially open and demonstrative, the 2015 Cristal is going to require more patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruits, white flowers, crushed mint and subtle hints of buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep, concentrated and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky extract and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse. This is a serious, vinous Champagne that has considerable substance to age and may well evolve along the lines of the lovely 1985. 95+ WILLIAM KELLEY, the wine advocate

  9. Lallier Blanc de Blanc NV
    Lallier Blanc de Blanc NV
Cultivated with 100% Chardonnay grapes from two magnificent grand cru regions: Aÿ and the Côtes des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Oger), an approach pioneered in the late 90s by James Lallier, at a time when Chardonnay was chosen exclusively from Côte des Blancs. Perfectly timed harvesting to ensure that the grapes used in Blanc de Blancs Champagne are fully matured and at their pinnacle. Inspired by Lallier’s sincere respect and outstanding understanding of terroir, this pure Chardonnay is grown on chalky hillside plots, allowing the vine’s roots to penetrate deeper, providing excellent drainage, yet still retaining sufficient moisture for nourishment. A tribute to the legendary Champagne terroir.

    Lallier Blanc de Noirs NV
This unique blend of regional grapes allows Blanc de Noirs to take Pinot Noir’s remarkable complexity to a new level of purity and deep character. The combination of maturation in stainless steel tanks (90%) with 228L wooden barrels (10%) adds to the blend complexity, while the long aging on lees and low dosage (7g/l) completes the Blanc de Noirs’s signature profile. A 100% Pinot Noir blend made with 70% of harvest of that year. The result is a powerful, refined and generous wine.

Sourced predominantly from the 2020 harvest, which makes up 81% of the blend. For the first time since the creation of Réflexion, Chardonnay dominates the blend at 51%. Grapes were sourced from over 50 crus within Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne and Montgueux for the Chardonnay, and Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Bar for the Pinot Noir. An early harvest, starting in late August, yielded a superb quality of grapes, combining delivering intensity and freshness. The resulting base wine is strong, elegant and persistent, with a high maturity.

Julien explains that the Marne Valley vines sit in clay limestone soils, often giving richer Chardonnay notes than fruit from the Cote de Blancs. That said this is still very, very precise and fine with a rich mid palate for sure but then a precise, linear finish. To describe the flavour profile as ‘Chablis with bubbles’ would be perhaps to over-simplify things but this certainly makes for a sleek yet flavourful NV. Importer CellarHand

The generous and rounded style of 2016 is translated eloquently in the restrained house of Deutz with a primary and expressive blend of apple, pear, strawberry and fig. A friendly vintage to drink young. TYSON STELZER

The nose of the Deutz Brut Millésimé 2016 reveals itself to us with a delicate medley of fruit and pastry notes (apricot and peach tarts) interwoven with white flowers and ground almonds. The palate is direct on entry and shows a lovely vibrant character. Discreet notes of perfectly ripe yellow fruit and flowers are in keeping with the aromas perceived on the nose. The mid-palate gains in complexity to reveal delicate aromas of lovely ripe almonds. The finish is beautifully fresh and mineral with an almost saline dimension to it.

100% chardonnay from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, with a little Oger, Chouilly, Vertus and 4% Ville Marmery; aged 9 years on lees; disgorged 31 May 2022.

There's a compelling contrast here between the elegance of the house in this cool, late harvest, and a real presence of confidence and intensity that encapsulate the strength of Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The dancing purity of the season furnishes a fantastic core of lemon, white peach, grapefruit and nashi pear, but faintly brushed with the brioche and honey of age, a quiet declaration of the slow-motion evolution of great things to come. The grand acidity of 2013 unites with a deep ocean of salt-infused minerality in a mesmerising upwelling of pure, crystalline chalk that glitters and froths though a finish of epic line and length. The cool, restrained mood of 2013 charges Amour with a surge of energy that thrusts it long into the future of potential, confirming a brilliant Blanc de Blancs and the greatest since the spellbinding 2008. Golden in the glass, there's a lively shot of citrus lemon zest with subtle edges of caramel and toast. Nicely gourmet in style, this balances high acidity, zingy and vibrant fruit with a full body and firm structure. Soft perfumed florality is evident as well as grapefruit, lime and toasted brioche. Delamotte Blanc de Blanc 2018
The 2018 Brut Blanc de Blancs is a blend of fruit from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, six villages in the Côte des Blancs. Crushed rocks, mint, slate, lemon peel and green pear lend notable freshness. Like most wines in this vintage, the Blanc de Blancs is airy and medium-bodied in structure, but it shows lovely tension and fine balance. There's plenty of Delamotte class, in an understated style. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

The Delamotte 2018 Blanc de Blancs is showing well today, evoking a gourmand, complex bouquet of pastry, almonds, ripe orchard fruits, spices and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and chiseled, it’s enveloping and round with a fleshy core of fruit, though not as fleshy as the 2012, concluding with a tense and long finish. The 2018 Extra Brut Inattendue is a pure Chardonnay picked in Ludes and Rilly La Montagne. Slight creaminess and fresh, ripe yellow apple flesh appears on the nose. The palate is clearly very youthful with its foamy, exuberant mousse taking center stage and primary fruit still holding sway, deliciously so. This is a bit of a banger. Raspberry, almond paste, dried roses, a fair bit of white pepper and spice, aniseed too. It’s medium-bodied, frisky and fresh, plenty of red fruits, dried herb, a ‘mineral’ feel to it, not least with regards to acidity, peppery tannin, lots of energy, also kind of earthy and gravelly too, with a brisk finish of excellent length. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The 2020 Freisa Bonina is another fabulous wine in the entry-level portion of the range. Bright and translucent, the 2020 delivers striking complexity and nuance. The lion’s share of this small-volume cuvée is drawn from a single parcel of vines planted in 2004 in the clay and limestone soils of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio—just outside the Alba township, on the edge of the Barbaresco area. 39. Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cucolo 2021
Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cucolo 2021

Cavallotto’s Vigna del Cuculo is a major-league Barbera from a parcel of 50-plus-year-old vines on the western side of Bricco Boschis. This parcel is named after the cuckoo bird (cuculo)—we’re not sure why, and neither is Alfio Cavallotto! This wine's unique power and ridiculous quality can be attributed to the mature vines, low yields and powerful terroir of the Bricco Boschis. The western aspect and the preponderance of limestone temper Barbera’s natural acidity, and Alfio Cavallotto explains that this ‘Barolo’ terroir contributes to an aromatic range in Barbera that is closer to Nebbiolo.

The winemaking is also distinctive, with up to 18 days on skins (a long time for Barbera) and then aging for 20 months in the same mature Slavonian casks as the Nebbiolo wines. 2021 is a wonderfully fleshy and perfumed year for this benchmark wine. It’s got that core of pure, sweet, plummy fruit so particular to this Barbera, here infused with nuances of anise, dried flower and earthy minerals. The tannins are supple and elegant, the acidity ripe yet racy, and the wine finishes with unusual depth, finesse and complexity for the variety. Equally deep, complex and textural—not all Barbera is created equal.

Organic. Lalù’s Barbera from fruit purchased from Monforte’s San Sebastiano—a site that Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala believe is exceptional for this variety.  Made with a third each of whole-berry (Leroy style), whole-bunch and destemmed fruit, the wine fermented and was raised entirely in concrete, where it aged for eight months. Lalù’s is a radiant, linear, focused Barbera that wafts from the glass with shades of fresh red fruit, woody herbs and floral lift. The palate is silky and vibrant with depth and texture, and while it delivers a serious dose of fruit, you’ll find plenty of finesse and mineral freshness, too. A lovely, new-wave Barbera.

    Lalu Langhe Barbera d'Alba 2022

Organic. Lalù’s Barbera just gets better. The new release is the first to include fruit from the new estate vineyard of Bricco Giubellini in Monforte. The vines here lie on Diano sandstone at a lofty 530 metres, an altitude that brings welcome freshness to warmer Piemonte vintages such as 2022 and 2023. The balance of the Barbera is drawn from fruit purchased from Monforte’s San Sebastiano—another site Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala believe exceptional for this variety.

Made with a mix of whole berries and bunches, the wine fermented and matured for eight months entirely in concrete. It’s a more powerful, sensual release than last year, still perfumed and vibrant yet more textural. The wine slinks out of the glass with pure red berries, violets and brown spices before turning towards more earthy shades of liquorice and woody herbs. The palate has joyous purity as well as a lovely mouthwatering quality from both the powdery tannins and the variety’s bright acidity while also hinting at Lalù’s light touch in the cellar. A first-class artisanal Barbera here.

  42. Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Majano 2020
Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Majano 2020

The domaine crafts two Barbara wines, both sitting at what we could call ‘the serious end’ of the Barbera spectrum. In a Bibendum setting, this means closer in style to the structured, ageworthy style of Cavallotto, rather than, say, the approachable and seductive character of Sandrone or Massolino. This wine is the more fruit-forward of the two and is drawn from the Majano vineyard in Neive, sitting at 190 metres on sandy clay. The oldest vines here have reached 50 years of age, bringing uncommon depth and vinosity. The wine was matured in stainless steel for 12 months before bottling.

This is superb; bloody and ferrous yet with lovely florals and a pure, dark cherry core. It immediately speaks as to why we love this producer. There’s depth yet great finesse and it’s loaded with character.

  43. Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto 2019
Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto 2019

Stefanetto comes from mature vines in Busso’s San Stunet vineyard (see notes for the Barbaresco San Stunet below). The higher altitude (380m above sea level), age of vines (25 to 50 years old) and limestone rich soils all contribute to a deeper and more structured Barbera than the Majano. Accordingly, this wine is raised in neutral barrels of various sizes for at least 12 months. It is also released with one extra year of age.

This has more overt flesh, more plummy fruit, wilder notes and powdery tannins. In short, it’s a dark and layered Barbera of enormous character and length.

As readers will remember, this cuvée takes its name from its provenance from parcels that share the same latitude: that's to say, the south of Vertus, which routinely delivers a sunnier, rounder style. Marchesi Alfieri La Tota Barbera d'Asti 2020 (Screwcap)

Made from 100% Barbera, sourced from vineyards of different ages, soil types, and aspect. The grapes are harvested and vinified separately, and only after the malolactic fermentation, is the final assembly carried out.

An intense ruby red colour with some purple hues is followed by intense, vinous aromas of ripe plum, blue and black fruits, and vanilla. Opulent and robust on the palate with soft tannins, note of sweet spices, wild berries and the vanilla of the wood, all with a vibrant finish. Delicious! PWS

Pale orange. Smoky red berries, toasty lees and orange zest on the highly perfumed nose. Pliant, penetrating redcurrant and blood orange flavors are sweetened by a touch of honey and pick up smokiness with air. Deep but dry, even a bit uncompromising in a positive way. The red berry quality comes back on the finish, which shows very good clarity, lift and refreshing bitterness. JOSH RAYNOLDS, Vinous Media

    Henri Giraud Rose Dame Jane

Beginning with the striking, pale copper color, this is very unconventional rosé champagne. Wonderful fruit aromas that range from cherry and wild strawberry to persimmon and candied orange with a touch of sushi ginger. Then comes the mouth-filling and well-structured palate that has an amazing grainy-chalky feel to it, unlike anything else in this category. Very long, saline finish. A cuvée of pinot noir with a small amount of chardonnay that was vinified in amphoras. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

The NV Dame-Jane is 100% Pinot Noir vinified and aged in amphora. Bright and light on its feet, the Dame-Jane is brisk and yet also shows quite a bit of depth. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, crushed rocks and hard candy all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Rosé. This release is based on 2019, with 40% reserve wines. Disgorged: October 1, 2022. ANTONIO GALLONI
