The Göttweiger Messwein, or altar wine, has been an institution in this Benedictine monastery for centuries. Grüner Veltliner and rosé (from Pinot Noir) are vinified as light, dry wines. From the nature-friendly cultivation of the vineyards to the care and processing of the grapes and wine, the “Reinheitsgebot”, or purity law, of the church must be obeyed. Messwein cannot be produced without the permission of the bishop, and it must be only natural and unaltered. Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Young Vine 2022A blend of higher altitude parcels around the village of Fytia and the warmer, lower elevation parcels
adjacent to the village of Trilofos. Vines are young and non-irrigated at an altitude 200-500 metres on Schist, granite and limestone. Naoussa’s region warm continental climate with moderate rainfall throughout the year. Cooling winds from Vermio mountain are crucial for the quality of the grapes.
Grapes are hand-picked, 75% destemmed, macerated for 12-15 days and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 3 months and 8 months in concrete tanks.
Fresh strawberries, cherries, and raspberries, potentially with hints of wild herbs, spices, and even a touch of floral elements weaving themselves in too. The palate offers a juicy and refreshing experience, with bright red and black fruits dominating. Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner 2023Gruner Veltliner is a white grape variety native to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic. In Australia Gruner is planted exclusively in cooler regions such as the Tumbarumba, The Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Gruner is often compared to other varieties such Riesling with slightly more volume, texture and more approachable acidity and more subtle, nuanced aromatics.
The 2022 displays aromas of grapefuit, stone fruits, citrus and subtle spice. That lovely green herb flecks the nose and the palate with that line of grapefruity, citrus complemented by fresh white peach and subtle pear. The palate is vibrant and juicy with lovely salivating acidity with some wonderful phenolic play that grips the mouth on the way through. A really impressive Australian version of this varietal with more hopefully to come. We continue to be impressed with the line-up of Nick Spencer gear we try.

Schloss Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner Loss 2023Loess terraces and vineyards paint the classical picture of the Kamptal region. The soft formed hills around Langenlois are a gateway to the Waldviertel area, defining the climate of the valley. Loess is a sandy soil – brought to the region by winds ten thousands of years ago from the Alpine heights. This limy and mineral rich soil gives the Grüner Veltliner LÖSS its classical, elegant structure and its unique spicy character.
A Cistercian monastic estate, is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube area with a documented history that dates back to 1171. All the vineyards are located on slopes and terraces around the valley of the river Kamp near the town of Langenlois and the village of Gobelsburg. Schloss Gobelsburg specialises in Grüner Veltliner and Riesling and produces authentic and noble wines from different single vineyard, village and regional appellations. Franz Haas Lepus Pinot Bianco Lepus 2021The vines here reflect the challenging extremes of viticulture. Surrounded by mountains, winters arev long and freezing and the short summer months scorching hot, with nearby Bolzano often recording Italy’s hottest temperatures. Breezes from nearby Lago di Garda provide a moderating influence and there is a dramatic difference between day and night temperatures, especially at the vineyards over 500 metres. The wines are characterized by crisp fruit and refreshing acidity with real personality and ageing potential.
From vineyards between 600-800 metres with soils with a high content of clay and lime, this is fermented off skins at controlled temperature, mostly in stainless steel with 20% in old barriques and aged on lees for a few months for a fuller body and complexity. About one third of the wine also goes through malolactic fermentation. On the nose there are floral notes, ripe apples, almond and fresh bread crust. Grown on quartz and volcanic rock soils, the grapes benefit from the region's unique alpine terroir. The wine is matured on the lees for 6-7 months, with 20% aged in large wooden barrels, resulting in a beautifully complex texture with remarkable freshness.
On the nose, it offers an elegant bouquet of white flowers, lemon peel, ripe orchard fruits, and chamomile, underscored by delicate hints of almond and mint.
