Stift Gottweig Gruner Veltliner Messwein 2023Stift Goettweig Messwein Grüner Veltliner comes from an estate that has been engaged in wine-growing in the Kremstal region since the 11th century – though it can be said to be in the form of its life, with 2020 Winemaker of the Year Fritz Miesbauer doing a great job at the helm.
The Göttweiger Messwein, or altar wine, has been an institution in this Benedictine monastery for centuries. Grüner Veltliner and rosé (from Pinot Noir) are vinified as light, dry wines. From the nature-friendly cultivation of the vineyards to the care and processing of the grapes and wine, the “Reinheitsgebot”, or purity law, of the church must be obeyed. Messwein cannot be produced without the permission of the bishop, and it must be only natural and unaltered. Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Young Vine 2022A blend of higher altitude parcels around the village of Fytia and the warmer, lower elevation parcels
adjacent to the village of Trilofos. Vines are young and non-irrigated at an altitude 200-500 metres on Schist, granite and limestone. Naoussa’s region warm continental climate with moderate rainfall throughout the year. Cooling winds from Vermio mountain are crucial for the quality of the grapes.
Grapes are hand-picked, 75% destemmed, macerated for 12-15 days and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 3 months and 8 months in concrete tanks.
Fresh strawberries, cherries, and raspberries, potentially with hints of wild herbs, spices, and even a touch of floral elements weaving themselves in too. The palate offers a juicy and refreshing experience, with bright red and black fruits dominating. Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner 2023Gruner Veltliner is a white grape variety native to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic. In Australia Gruner is planted exclusively in cooler regions such as the Tumbarumba, The Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Gruner is often compared to other varieties such Riesling with slightly more volume, texture and more approachable acidity and more subtle, nuanced aromatics.
The 2022 displays aromas of grapefuit, stone fruits, citrus and subtle spice. That lovely green herb flecks the nose and the palate with that line of grapefruity, citrus complemented by fresh white peach and subtle pear. The palate is vibrant and juicy with lovely salivating acidity with some wonderful phenolic play that grips the mouth on the way through. A really impressive Australian version of this varietal with more hopefully to come. We continue to be impressed with the line-up of Nick Spencer gear we try.

The villages of Naoussa offer a most interesting diversification on their hilly terrain in terms of altitude, slope, soil structure, orientation etc. These conditions shape an intriguing mixture of meso-climates.

The soft formed hills around Langenlois are a gateway to the Waldviertel area, defining the climate of the valley. A Cistercian monastic estate, is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube area with a documented history that dates back to 1171. All the vineyards are located on slopes and terraces around the valley of the river Kamp near the town of Langenlois and the village of Gobelsburg. Schloss Gobelsburg specialises in Grüner Veltliner and Riesling and produces authentic and noble wines from different single vineyard, village and regional appellations. Poli Negroni packPoli are best known for there fine range of premium Grappa, liquers and distillates from North east Italy. This classic was first created for Count Camillo Negroni in 1919 at Florence's Café Casoni.
