  12. ELM Bomba Rosso 2022
    ELM Bomba Rosso 2022
Emerging winemaker Madeleine Marson has launched her first wines under the ELM label. ELM wines pay tribute to the upbringing Madeleine and her two sisters, Emily and Laura (together ELM), had in the Yarra Valley and Heathcote, where winemaking and the traditions of the Italian family table were strongly held. A long (official and unofficial) apprenticeship under the instruction of her father, Mario Marson, followed, and together they now run Vinea Marson in Heathcote. There, Madeleine got her hands on some parcels of fruit from Heathcote and the Alpine Valleys and crafted these playful takes on Italian family favourites.

ELM ‘Bomba Rosso’ takes an Australian approach to Friulian blends, with Heathcote Shiraz’s bright fruit concentration married with the enticing savouriness of Nebbiolo. A complex nose of red berries, blackcurrants, liquorice and dried herbs is followed by a rich and intense palate with dry and chewy tannins typical of the Nebbiolo variety.

Cidre Francois Sehedic Cider Brut 750ml

La Cidrerie, created in 1950 by François Sehedic father, has been specialized in the production of drinks from apples to cider of ancient varieties specific to the Breton terroir and particularly to the prestigious Fouesnant. Marie Laure Séhédic and her husband Christian Daniélou continue today to highlight the area. The cider house holds organic and biodynamic certification.

Traditional cider from Brittany with a funky twist to its bright and inviting nose. A touch of sweetness that finishes nice and dry and is wonderfully rustic in its style. This is true farmhouse cider.

Mostly Sangiovese with 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot.

Medium-bodied, pomegranate-themed juice but with depth and a vermouth tang, bitter herbs and some nice supple softness to it all, black cherry and bitter almond with a black olive twist. Chalky texture. Goodie. KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

This release of Alto! Alto!! is right in the zone of where we want it to be. Fruit, deliciousness, and aromatic intrigue balanced by structure and unravelling layers of savoury complexity. Also made by one of our great fiends and somm about town Liam O'Brien. Thanks for this delicious drop Liam!

Bright purple/ruby. Medium weight, juicy, smashable palate, just the right amount of sour cherry and fine tannins. Sangiovese leads the way with red cherries and terracotta dust; Cab Sauv follows with blackcurrant, blackberry and a hint of cedar; Merlot fills out the finish with persistent fruit and an attractive tea leaf character.

Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley in the sub region of Gruyere, Martingale is a first-generation family run vineyard. Focusing predominantly on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from their 40-acre property of which 20 acres is under vine.

This new entry level Pinot is about as good as you'll see coming out of the Valley for this price. Generous and packed with varietal flavour, it has a great mouthfeel and bursts with juicy cherry, red plum and subtle spice. PWS

    Fiore Nero Chianti 2022
Spiced cherries, dried thyme, rose petals and licorice lead into a swelling belly of berries and twigs. Its lovely and even keeled in its delivery, a spine of tannins ribs around the core of crunchy dark berries. The bright fruit notes are tempered by a savoury edge while a powdery tail of tannins signs off the wine. This is jaw-dropping value for a Chianti. No need to age this, relish in its youthful immediacy. GABRIELLE POY

  19. Handpicked Regional Selection Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023
Handpicked Regional Selection Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023
Founded on the idea of crafting outstanding wines from the world's best regions, Handpicked Wines carefully owns or partners with vineyards across Australia and beyond - from the cool reaches of Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania to iconic international regions like Barolo and Marlborough.
Their winemaking philosophy is all about site expression, sustainable farming, and detailed winemaking that best expresses the character of each of their wines origins. With a portfolio that spans everyday drinking wines to rare, single vineyard bottlings. This wine falls into their regional range and is a selection of declassified fruit off their single vineyard expressions, contract growers and managed sites.

It's a stellar little drop leaning into the autumnal and filigree nature of Yarra pinot but with a little more cushion and flesh that makes it so appealing. Red currant, a touch of wild strawberry and some forest fruit mix leap out of the glass with white pepper spice and touch of clove warmly greet you. Its mid-weight in style with some lovely, superfine tannins that etch the surface of the glossy fruit. There is just a kiss light toasty oak but you could barely tell while it subtly frames the pure fruits. Another pinot where you have to ask how do they make it for the money?

  20. Manoir du Kinkiz Cidre 'Fouesnant' 750ml
Manoir du Kinkiz Cidre 'Fouesnant' 750ml
Fouesnant Cider 750ml is the heir to authentic know-how and a long family tradition. Made from orchards located in Pays Fousnantais, this cider is a blend of old varieties and harvested by hand. The apples are sorted manually and the pressing is done when the fruits are fully ripe, from the end of September to December. The fermentation of this cider is slow and it ends with natural fermentation in the bottle for about 2 and a half months, which gives it a fine and digestible bubble Recognised for its bitterness, roundness and persistent aromas of fresh apple, fresh butter and hazelnut. Made from 100% Apple juice fermented. We recommend drinking the Fouenant Cider as an aperitif.

Best Traditional Cider - Australian Cider Awards 2024

This cider is a nod to the traditional English style—dry, but not overly so. We started with a base of cider apples, carefully blending the highly esteemed Kingston Black variety with a generous portion of Brown’s apple, known for its mild sharpness. The fermentation was a slow process, as we aimed for a “keeve”—a tricky technique that didn’t entirely go as planned, but still yielded some delightful results.

The final cider offers a well-rounded apple flavour, complemented by a fresh finish, intriguing tannins, and a hint of funk that adds character. It’s a balanced and enjoyable cider with depth, perfect for those who appreciate a bit of complexity in their glass

  22. Wickhams Road Yea Pinot Noir 2023
Wickhams Road Yea Pinot Noir 2023

I forget what Franco said on his little back label spiel, as I’ve given the bottle away, though it was something along the lines of ‘High acidity from this site, so no need for adds’.

It’s a bit spicy and mulchy, poached strawberry and raspberry, a little mint and floral perfume. It’s crisp, sappy, lively, a smudgy feel to tannin, slightly smoky and tobacco-laced, with a juicy finish of good length, gentle dusty tannin trailing. Nice.. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Cooler and drier than their Hoddles Creek vineyards, this Yea Valley pinot is the most reticent and fine-boned of this year's three Wickhams pinots. A light, bright red, this has scents of redcurrants, a little strawberry and blood orange. The palate is compact and very nicely balanced, with gently grippy tannins suggesting that this will need another six to 12 months to unfurl and grow into itself. Tangy, dry sort of style, into tangerine, grapefruit, white cherry and maybe some aniseed floating about. A little spice too. It has crunch, and a gently savoury finish of solid length. Goes all right. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer and packaged it up with some of the besta value coming out of the region.

Unbelievable value again this year. A bit of white pepper and sour cherry fruit that opens into a slight darker fruit profile in the glass. Same goes on the palate with a little more dark plumb and morello cherry here than in other years. Plushly fruited but all held together with nice savoury tannins and a splash of leathery spice.

like this style of pinot. Built for drinkin' not thinkin' and one which will take a chill in the fridge should the mercury dictate such an action. Red apple, redcurrant, raspberry and red cherry with an expression of orange peel oil, just like you see in those fancy cocktail bars. Some nice spice, dried herbs, lily and leaf litter, too, finishing spacious and in an sapid, easy-drinking style. DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion

Bright cherry red in the glass. Pretty aromas of cherry, strawberries and cream confectionery, sweet spice and dried flowers. Soft, juicy, round and easy drinking. There's plenty of jubey red fruits, along with lively acidity and firm, textured tannins. Straightforward, enjoyable drinking. AARON BRASHER, The Real Review

De Bortoli Estate Pinot Noir 2023
From three, mainly south and east facing sites, all planted in the early 1990's. A light, bright ruby red. Red plum, cherries and pomegranate combine with some crushed flowers and white pepper in this stylish and, always, well priced wine. The palate is light to medium bodied with those aforementioned red fruits, some underbrush and very fine, persistent tannins. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

The Estate Vineyard wines are elegant, handcrafted wines that reflect the unique characters of the De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate in Dixons Creek where this essentially single vineyard wines from mature vine is made with minimal handling and thoughtful winemaking. Exceptional quality
with a distinct sense of place.

There is a lovely smokey cedary thing going on here, its really inviting giving the pure red fruits and soft sweet spices a lovely counterpoint. A touch of darky cherry and a little wild strawberry as well. That smoky things continues on the palate with combo of black and red forest fruits to the fore and a little garrigue like finish that close it out. It looks pretty serious in some sense but at the same time easy to drink, keeping you come back for more.

Always a very nice wine, and great value too.

Cherry, almond, aniseed, a smattering of dried herbs, maybe lavender. It’s medium-bodied, kind of juicy, kind of savoury, there’s some strawberry in with cherry, some grainy grip to tannin, slightly ferrous, gently bitter with amaro, and the finish is fresh and pretty long. It’s maybe a little more crunchy and herbal than some vintages, and yet, it still lays on the charm. Nice. I do like a wine that doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than a great drink. SPECIAL VALUE - Hand picked from a single block of 777 from the Napoleone vineyard. Some whole bunches. A light, bright garnet. An instantly appealing bouquet of fresh summer berries, a little briar, white pepper and light rose petal scents. This delivers on the light- to medium-bodied palate, too. Amen Break Cabernet Franc 2021
There's certainly a bustle in the hedgerow here, with blackberry, black raspberry, leaf, dried roses and pencils. Medium-bodied, cool acidity, a distinctly 'mineral' feel, intense small berried dark fruit, graphite tannin, a little sundried tomato and raspberry pip, and a spicy and gently bitter amaro/sappy finish of excellent length. Tight and crunchy, and very good to drink. I like it a lot. (93+) GARY WALSH, The Wien Front

We've featured the wines of under the Amen Break label a lot here and there is a reason why - they rock. Hailing from a small village in east of Australia called New Zealand the Clonal Brothers are Matt and Steve Harrop and together they are a lethal winemaking combination. One of the most sampled drum patterns music nerds will recognise this as a 6- to 7-second (4-bar) drum solo performed by Gregory Sylvester "G. C.". Spring Vale Melrose Pinot Noir 2024
Very bright, full purple-red colour; a bouquet of stemmy whole-bunch aroma, sarsaparilla and root vegetables, the same flavours evident in the mouth, where the tannins are fine and sappy, with a gentle grip and the overall impression is very Beaujolais-like. Very attractive and aromatic style of pinot. HUON HOOKE, The Real Review

This is a good wine to drink. Juicy fruit of the strawberry-and-cherry persuasion comes infused with roasted nut, curry leaf, undergrowth, blood orange and earth notes. It’s juicy of fruit but dry of tannin, and while it’s noticeably complex it’s not in-your-face about it. You’d be happy drinking this. It’s a good pinot. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

We wholeheatodly agree Campbell. Its a cracking little pinot and given its from Tassie its punching way above its weight in the value stakes. Certainly got a bit of that Tassie grunt we like but plenty of fruit to back all up and lots of freshness too keeping if firm and fresh.

The crew at Springvale know what they are doing and we are generally impressed but the quality they turn out. This pinot is no exception.

The biodynamic orchards are comprised of trees upto 50+ years old containing 40-50 varieties of heirloom apples. The hand-harvested fruit is dehydrated for 4-5 weeks and simply ground and pressed then settled for clarification before fermenting naturally, originating in tank and finishing in bottle. Bubbles develop within two weeks of bottling. It has lovely aromatics of graham and baked apple, followed by elegant bubbles and an off-dry profile on the palate.

Willie Smiths Heritage Blend Cider 750ml
Situated on 115 acres, Wille Smiths is 30 minutes south of Hobart in the Huon Valley, a once thriving apple-growing region that exported apples all over the globe and earned Tasmania the title of the 'Apple Isle'.

Our farm went organic in 1997, thanks to the innovation of current orchardist, Andrew Smith. It was a bold move, transforming the orchard to organic, and involved a lot of new techniques and training to achieve. With a new focus on organic farming and the use of the apples in our cider, they hope to bring back the glory of the 'Apple Isle' days once more.

The cidery is located at the  orchard, meaning the fruit travels the smallest distance possible from tree to bottle. It's a full circle process which all occurs in one place, right here on the farm.

Be in no doubt, this is one of the countries of not the worlds greatest ciders. Bold statement for sure but we think you will agree once you try it. This used to be called the French Blend but the various type of apples have moved it away from a predominantly French blend so they have changed the name. This is a seasonal release and one we are looking forward too. If you have never tried these we cannot recommend them enough - so bloody delicious!

Dried cherries, rubbed herbs and a faintly briny green olive tang ride on a wash of the distinctive aidity , divinly ordaining it to exorcise the devil that is melted cheese. Moondarra Fin Pinot Noir 2022
The Moondarra vineyard was established in the Gippsland Mountain Rivers District by the Prentice family in  1991 and has always focused on growing small volumes of absolutely super quality fruit. Moondarra Pinot  Noir is typically both elegant and powerful.

Fin is an early realse declassified version of the Studebaker from young vines planted in 2007 to a mixture of self grown seedlings, clones 115, 777, Abel and Calera. Guy Acard inspired, involving pre-ferment cold soak, vigorous pigeage and eleveage in second use oak. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve silkiness. Full bodied yet delicate it has Neil's trademark wildness.

Surprsing on all the good ways with a lithe rose petal and floral lilt that makes you think you are getting a light and delicate pinot but that proceeds to rush with you lashing of red rspaberry and morello cherry fruit in a plush and sweet package this light on its feet, vibrant and packed full of flavour.

    Le Cinciole Rosato 2022
Organic/biodynamic. Sangiovese grapes are specially harvested at the right degree of ripeness in order to obtain finesse and balance without excessive alcohol content. The de-stemmed grapes stay briefly in the press for a slight maceration. The must is then vinified “in white” at a controlled temperature. The richness of floral perfumes, delicate fruity hints as well as evident mineral notes, characterize the gustative freshness of our Rosato which, like all the other wines coming from our vineyards, shows elegance and persistence.

  43. Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir 2024
Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir 2024
Red fruit, cherry, a little earthy, with some cinnamon oak showing, and sarsaparilla. It’s a more fruity and bouncy expression of Hoddles Pinot, some grainy chew to tannin, a bit of sap and orange rind, something of a ferrous edge, with a stiff tannic finish of good length. Needs a bit of time to come around. It’s maybe a little more robust and fruity than is usual for this wine, though it’s still good. (92+) GARY WALSH

    Vinea Marson Rosato 2021
Possessing a nose of enticing strawberries and cream, savouriness comes into play on the palate thanks to a portion of saignéed fruit and fermentation in old French oak barriques & puncheons, with sour cherry wood and pleasing phenolics accompanying tart strawberries and yellow nectarine character. A nuanced finish with balanced acid and tannin, this easy-drinking Rosato epitomises European savouriness alongside sangiovese's cherry-dominated generosity. VINEA MARSON

  45. Xavier Papa Pinot Noir 2024
    Xavier Papa Pinot Noir 2024

Xavier Goodridge is part of the new wave of progressive, low-intervention winemakers in Australia, known for crafting pure, vibrant, and honest wines. Based in Victoria, Xavier previously worked alongside Patrick Sullivan, a leading figure in the modern Australian wine movement and one of Gippsland's burgeoning wine scene's ambassador. Xavier has developed a similarly thoughtful and sustainable approach to farming and winemaking and you can see that in the purity and expressive nature of all his wines.

Xavier's philosophy is built around organic and biodynamic viticulture, focusing on minimal inputs in both vineyard and winery. He believes that great wine is made in the vineyard, not manipulated in the cellar. The result? Wines that are alive, expressive, and transparent to place.

The Pa Pa Pinot Noir is one of Xavier's signature wines and a brilliant reflection of his hands-off, terroir-driven style from Gippsland. The fruit is Handpicked , fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts and partial whole bunch fermentation to bring perfume and spice. This has wonderful aromatic intensity flowing from the glass with heady perfume and a wonderful floral note. It's juicy, showing off a lively core of red cherries, cranberries, and wild strawberries, with hints of savoury spice, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness underneath. It's on the light side of medium-bodied, incredibly bright and energetic, but with enough depth to keep it interesting. The tannins are soft and silky, and the finish is lifted and refreshing. This is a seriously drinkable Pinot Noir - joyful, pure, and super expressive.

A lightly funky Tamar Valley pinot noir fermented with 15% whole bunches before three months in oak and bottling with minimal SO2. A light, airy ruby in the glass with aromas of bright red cherry and red plum with hints of leaf litter, spice, light amaro herbs, raspberry flan, citrus blossom and light gamey notes. Spacious, savoury and stony with plenty of interest. DAVE BROOKES, James Halliday

  48. The Pass Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
The Pass Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
The name 'The Pass' tells a great story. It's named after the highway linking Marlborough's key wine regions - the Awatere and Wairau Valleys. Once just a rough bridle track cutting through brown mountains, green forests, and rows of vineyards, today it's still one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and while Marlborough is more famous for its white it produces some cracking pinot that is plush, generous and rammed with flavour.

Crafted by Stu Marfell and the Foley Wines team the secret to the it's character lies in the blend of two Marlborough sub-regions which Stu Marfell knows well - he grew up not far from the vineyards that supply fruit for The Pass.

Redcurrant, raspberry, and cherry flavours to the fore, wrapped in a gentle layer of sweet spice and ground pepper. This is a wine of pillowy red fruit, elegance, its fine, silky tannins carry the plush fruit to a long and lush close. Great stuff capturing all the generosity of pinot from Marlborough while balancing freshness and energy too.
