Fruit off the four single blocks, each of which make up their own wine. Here it’s a super fragrant, juicy combo of red and black cherries, fresh herbs, loads of Middle Eastern spices, sumac, clove and Chinese five-spice; a baker’s delight really. The palate is on the lighter side of mid-weighted, with lots of fresh acidity keeping this buoyant, tannins light and fine. Smart outcome given a difficult vintage. Set on the gently rolling slopes of the Mornington Peninsula, Kooyong has long been regarded as one of the region’s benchmark estates. With a strong focus on site expression, the winery farms several distinct vineyard parcels, each bottled separately to highlight subtle shifts in soil, aspect and microclimate.
Pinot Noir is the heart of Kooyong’s story. These are wines of purity and poise, finely structured, fragrant and quietly powerful. They capture what Mornington does best: tension, texture and a sense of place without excess weight.
