This wine sits in a range the Blancks call "Les Classiques". These are easy, accessible wines made from the traditional Alsatian grape varieties. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.

Little Frances Warner Vineyard Shiraz 2022Great delight here. Medium weight but with darker fruit spectrum scents and flavours, plum, choc-liquorice, cassis and lavender with faint mintiness and dill/fennel notes in the mix. The palate is supple, smooth, rolls beautifully and long. There's a sense of concentration but refinement, lots of graphite minerally notes and light, wet pebble notes. It's a delight to drink. Shaw & Smith Riesling 2024The slip of sweetness, the burst of fruit, the citrussy cut of the finish. This is both impressive and delicious, though you get the feeling that it would be a searing number if a little residual sugar had been put to good/positive effect. It tastes mainly of lime, apple juice and apple core and while it explodes upfront it really kicks with acid-driven flavour through the finish. Pete Schell's Bête Noir is a shiraz blended across a selection of Barossan grounds including a portion from the cooler Eden Valley. This has width and depth, a sumptuousness yet the tickle of brine and crushed granite minerality feels stippled through the wine. The mainstays are cumquat, green apple, a touch of blackcurrant, even some laid back tropical fruit notes and a squeeze of mandarin. The juice is extracted with infinite care in an air-bag press. The slow, gentle pressing avoids crushing the stalks and pips. The must starts fermenting of its own accord thanks to the natural yeast present in the juice, and the fermentation generally lasts from four to 10 weeks. Schmolzer and Brown Thorley Obstgarten T Riesling 2024Apple blossom, pastry dough, fresh lemonade, lemon sherbet and subtle macadamia are sliced up by a slatey mineral cut. Very hightoned and pretty with pops of sweetness adding appeal. Air and temperature unlocks bath salts, savoury lemon thyme, and a whisper of mandarin pith. The palate is quite coiled and tensile, with a tight frame of pithy acid and chalky phenolics constricting around lemon juice, lemon pith, slatey minerals again, crushed green apple. If there's residual sugar here, it's completely guillotined by the acid which keeps excellent line and freshness through a long finish. Tightly wound, vibrant, bright, structured. Very good. The 2022 Thorley Riesling is laden with straw and tatami, lemongrass, wet wool and scratched citrus. In the mouth, the wine is viscose and wide, textural and engaging. Curlewis Bel Sel Syrah 2022A true cool climate shiraz. Herbaceous aromas with a scent of blackberry and blue fruits, a light spray of black pepper and woody spices. Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.
Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.
It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

The high-risk part comes after the canes that feed the fruit are cut – causing that fruit to concentrate – effectively using the vine as a drying rack for the fruit. Much depends on the weather conditions that follow – sunny and dry conditions work wonders; wet, cold or windy conditions all bring challenges. Stephanie uses intuition to decide the day to harvest.
