Intensity and concentration seem to be the calling cards of 2022 Clare Valley riesling, and here's a case in point. Huge energy and velocity, this is tightly wound and racy with a filigree of lime, green apple, grapefruit, ginger, talc and green herbs oscillating between the bouquet and palate. My tape of choice, if I was feeling flush was a TDK SA-X (chrome), or even an MA-X (metal setting), and if poor, maybe a TDK AD or a lowly D. All very nice. But thank heavens for Spotify.
A big juicy dark hit of flavour here, along with raspberry juice, mint, a bit of earthy coal-like stuff, some chewy chalk-like grip, and a warm and generous finish of good length. Ok. A man of few words on this one but let me assure you that this is straight up, bloody delicious and yes, we agree its perfect for a cold winter eve. This hidden little beauty from Bleasdale is matured in small oak casks in the rafters of the winery's hot tin roof for a minimum of 7 years before blending. The result is a uniquely Aussie inspired tawny style that is so well priced you might as well by a six pack and sip it to your hearts contents all winter long and never feel guilty.
Rammed full of clove, five-spice. Licorice root, treacle, honey, plenty of baked walnut and edged with roasted brown sugar. There is that lovely edging of dried citrus peel and fruit cake mix too. Sweet and lush but not as cloying as you might think… don't get us wrong though, its sweet, and that's how we like it.

Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.
While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.

Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Rose 2021 375mlNever judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? First Drop Mothers Milk Shiraz 20212021 was a fine vintage in the Barossa. There is no doubt that this wine will improve but damn it's delicious now. Deep plum and cherry fruits, plenty of spicy depth with hints of licorice, dark chocolate and earth. This is really good Barossa shiraz. It has all that Barossa charm with satsuma plumb, sweet blackberry conserve and hints of maraschino cherry too, while staying vibrant and lifted. Plenty of depth and concentration on the pallet and it doesn't shy away from its origins but it does it deftly by remaining light on its feet, cut with fine tannin and that fans out gently into subtle, chocalaty, framing oak. Wirra Wirra Farmer's Heart Grenache 2023This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There's a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

Tomfoolery Young Blood Shiraz 2023Inspired by the new wave ‘Vino Joven’ wines of the old world, Young Blood Shiraz is released as a cheeky youngster with just a brief barrel maturation to showcase structure and varietal character, while retaining freshness and finesse. The fruit is open fermented utilising native yeasts, with 30% whole bunch in the mix. After 7 days maceration post-ferment, the wine is gently basket pressed and racked to stainless vats (50%) and old French oak hogsheads (50%) for 6 months maturation.
