    P & A Vin de France Chardonnay 2021

The P & V wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.

Nectarines, grapefruits and lemon curd hint towards ripeness on the nose. The palate is a delicious mix of citrus and crisp orchard fruits threaded with a minerally inflections and ginger spice. It's balanced and deliciously ripe. Gee there's a lot to like here for the price - chardonnay lovers unite, this is beauty! GABRIELLE POY

Domaine Lalaurie Rivage Blanc IGP Coteaux de Narbonne 2021
Following their father's death in 2020, twin sisters Camille and Audrey are forging ahead as the 10th generation to run this gorgeous family farm near Narbonne in the Languedoc. As an enologist Camille has overseen a significant jump in quality by introducing modern winemaking techniques after working vintages abroad. They are investing in revitalising the old cellar and focused on biodiversity and achieving close to organic farming practices. Her wine style is sparkly, clean and honest, delivering impeccable quality across the range.

A delicate, fresh and mineral wine from twin sisters Camille and Audrey, Rivage Blanc is racy and driven by Sauvignon Blanc, in a restrained European style. Floral citrus mingles with grapefruit juice and a very fine cut of refreshing acidity, a great example of Camille's clever, frank wine making style.

Forest Hill Highbury Fields Chardonnay 2023
Tasty stuff, easy drinking, ticks boxes for chardonnay 101. Nice whiffs of peach and nectarine, some ginger, a touch of nougat and faint green almond. The palate quite citrusy and green-apple driven, a little juicy, a lick of that nougat from the bouquet here, too, with a tangy, pineapple-y finish. Fun stuff, done well, good times. 6. Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2024
    Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2024
Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s packed with flavour, white nectarine and nutty spicy characters, a flinty grip to texture, quite some intensity and power here, and in some respects it seems more Beechworth than Yarra, or so I think. Pear and citrus, lime rind, with excellent length of flavour. It’s elemental as at now, and a little raw, though I reckon it will deliver with a couple of years in bottle. It’s a cracking release. 8. One Eighty Wines Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2023
One Eighty Wines Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2023

So, Charles one of the guns behind One Eighty Wines started working for Prince Wine Store the middle part of 2024 and quickly became an invaluable team member. Imagine our surprise when he bought in a selection of wines made from his home turf in the beautiful surrounds of Adelaide.

These are deftly crafted wines that speak gently of place with an easy going attitude that belies their subtle complexity. They are crafted beautifully allowing wine making elements to blend seamlessly with pure fruits and wonderful balance. These really over-deliver in every way.

The 2023 Chardonnay, sourced from the Adelaide Hills region, is aged in 50% new oak for 9 months, then bottle aged for a similar length, this wine boasts bold butterscotch flavours, with notes of green apple to give the wine great balance. It's a lovely combo of old-school richness and modern freshness. That's not easy to pull off but they have done it here without losing any of the positives either style. Well done!

From a single vineyard in Gruyere. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented in 15% new puncheons. Callie Jemmeson has a good feel for making chardonnay, and it shows on the complex bouquet of white peach, lemon zest, grilled hazelnuts and a soupçon of sea spray. It's mouth-filling and balanced, finishing with a touch of grip on the nicely structured and long finale. 96 PHILIP RICH, wine companion

The 2023 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is gentle and fine, with curry leaves and white peach, green apple and brine. What a lovely wine this is. It is chalky, nutty, and floral and exceptional value for money at $36 AUD. This is unassailable. ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

The pear flavours here are as overt as they are delicious. This is a wine that gushes up to greet you, its offering of juicy pears wrapped in wheat, cedar and grilled peach characters, its texture soft throughout. There's joy to be had here. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

A wine that has continue to evolve over the years and now has a distinctive style that is all about friendly expression of fruit with a little subtle unobtrusive oak inclusion. Nice melony cashew characters with a gentle hint of stone fruit adding richness. It's a light bodied style that screams out for drinking in the next few years. Crunchy lemony zip on the finish heights the crisp acidity.

  17. Delamere Sparkling Cuvee NV
    Delamere Sparkling Cuvee NV

Delamere Vineyards were planted in 1982 in the Pipers River region in northeast Tasmania making it one of the oldest plantings not only in the region but in Tasmania. They have 6.5ha under vine and its age makes it a rare resource in Tasmania. The ironstone rich soils are perfectly suited to the cultivars of pinot noir and chardonnay, and was established in the traditional French design used in Burgundy and Champagne.

The low yield per vine and the reflective heat from the ground produces wines with superior depth of flavour and ripe well-developed tannins. Vine age and subsequent natural balance are key factors in the consistent production of wines with great structure and harmony.

Perfumed and pretty on the nose but then racy on the palate. It feels like a low-dosage style. Strawberries, lime blossom, grapefruit and lemon rind. It all sizzles out through the finish, with length to burn. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, the winefront

  18. Yeringberg Babyberg Marsanne Roussanne 2023
    Yeringberg Babyberg Marsanne Roussanne 2023
Our first Babyberg is a playful and modern take on a Marsanne Roussanne blend, with which
we have a long and proud history. The result is golden yellow/orange in colour with herbal, honeysuckle and orange blossom aromas. The lively, floral palate has a lovely apricot-laden, spicy, roasted nut richness balanced by distinct pithy, chewy phenolics that are reminiscent of fine black tea. SANDRA DE PURY

Golden colour. Honey nut cornflakes, mint, apricot, nashi pear, a bag of white mushrooms. It’s a rich and juicy wine, but also quite nutty and savoury, all the peanuts and smoked ham, quince, quite waxy, but also has this woody grainy grip to it, though I quite like the texture here, and it finishes saline and unami with solid length, and something of an orange and Islay whisky character in the mix. OUTSTANDING - A ripe yet very aligoté nose offers up mostly notes of citrus confit and spice. There is fine mid-palate density to the delicious and lightly stony flavors that deliver fine length on the bone-dry and highly refreshing finale. This is a lovely example of the genre and worth a look. BURGHOUND

Very aromatic, some nice width to these aromas too. Juicy, easy, open, faintly saline accents in this complexity - just a modest suggestion of reduction in these flavours but it's a very drinkable, indeed delicious wine… BILL NANSON

    Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2023
There’s so much flavour, detail and complexity within, and yet it feels ethereal and feathery light – a bit of a yin and yang wine in a way. Stone fruit and citrus, especially grapefruit, doused in ginger spice with a refreshing ginger lemon tea, even quinine flavour à la tonic water. Flutters of flinty sulphides, harmonious with exceptional texture via creamy lees, a slip of spicy oak and a finish that stretches to the horizon. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

It starts quietly. With crunchy quince, umami notes of button mushrooms, oat biscuits and gingerbread, and then other aromas start to spill out – lemon curd, lemon tart with meringue, apples, honey coted nuts. Palate delivers texture and juicy acidity with a pink grapefruit and brown lime finish. It’s full of generous fruit with a mist of citrus essential oils, all in place with a good drive showing an interesting personality. Delicious drinking. (94) KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

Bright medium yellow colour with a smoky note on the initial aroma, with nougat, toasted nuts and beeswax, and on the palate, intense lemon/citrus and a hint of honey emerging. It is well concentrated and deep, with brilliant acidity underlining the focused and penetrating fruit flavours. Wonderful chardonnay. (From Main Ridge). (96) Huon Hooke, The Real Review

    Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2023

"It's the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I'll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. Fine-boned, but delivers just enough flavour. I was so taken by its balance and charm. Superb drinking. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

There would be a lot of wineries who would love to have this as their top chardonnay. But of course, Leeuwin has that little matter of Art Series above it. This really is one of the best and most complete of this line. Seems to have struck a nice balance between the early more opulent styles and some of the later leaner styles. The vintage has helped but the fruit is so pretty with typical cashew, light grapefruit and a little lemon character supported by such exquisitely applied oak. Very good.

Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Chardonnay Cuvee Reserve 2022
The entry-level white Burgundy comes from old-vine parcels in the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The vines have an average age of 48 years and, as with all the wines, harvesting is done by hand. For this cuvée, about half is vinified in stainless steel and half in used oak barrels. This gives a nice balance of fresh fruit with a light touch of oak.

Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end. Named for Hamish David Walsh, and as it happens, my brother is David Arthur Walsh. A blend of Burnside Chardonnay (raised in anfora) and Osmington (three year old oak).

Well, this is a wild one for sure. It’s kind of sweaty and clove spiced, oyster shell, white mushroom, lime and cape gooseberry. It’s saline and savoury, powdery and dusty in texture, some cashew cream in the mix, with a curry leaf finish of good length. It’s kind of dirty, and yet, I find it strangely compelling. The Brajkovichs remain firmly on top when it comes to New Zealand Chardonnay, finding another gear over the last decade as the competition around them heats up. They are undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest white wine producer and have set a blistering pace for the variety over the last four decades.

Yes, this small family winery that's sandwiched between a winding river and a busy highway is  a world beater. Collectors from the across the world are eager to snap up their wares upon release. Pulling off the highway just beyond the outskirts of Auckland and stepping through the lemon-yellow archway that leads into the tasting room it all seems a bit impossible. Maybe better suited to a few souvenirs, tea and scones perhaps? Then you taste the wines.

Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey. Character filled, compelling drinking, a chardonnay not afraid of flavour but happy resting in a space that feels cooler and brighter too. Apple, cashew, almond, pulpy grapefruit, cumquat, cinnamon. Golden Delicious apple and sweet Elberta peach aromas encircle the head, with a touch of thyme and spicy cinnamon basil. Spiced nectarines, honeycomb and saline notes allude to its underlying ripeness. On the palate, it's ripe yet constrained by a savoury scaffolding of spicy oak. There’s an abundance of bound ripe fruit, Anjou pear, yellow peaches, red apple skins and citrus curd. Fresh acidity and gentle phenolics envelope around the rich fruit core of the wine. It’s elegant in style, showing a fresh and clean finish. White peaches, toasted hazelnuts, flint, spiced pears, lemons and white grapefruit. Clove and nutmeg, too. Beautiful tension and phenolic texture, with a medium to full body, driven by bright acidity. Drink or hold. Screw cap. JAMES SUCKLING

  47. Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
    Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023

From the Full Moon Vineyard in Gladysdale. Wild ferment and 100% mlf. There's only one wine from winemakers and friends Steve Flamsteed and Dave Mackintosh, and it's always a good 'un. A bright green gold. There's aromas of ripe stone fruits together with some savoury and complex briny notes. On the palate, this has lots of flavour and punch, finishing long with a refreshing touch of grip. Delicious now and over the next 4–6 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.

A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Classy, understated and delicious. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Fron

  48. Handpicked Collection Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022
Handpicked Collection Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2022
A broad, rather fleshy chardonnay from a vintage of meager yields and considerable concentration. To its credit, despite the waxy spread of lanolin, hazelnut and orchard fruits, the acidity is soft, juicy and palpably natural. This makes for a poised, highly enjoyable chardonnay that is ready to go. Drink now. Screw cap. NED GOODWIN MW, jamessuckling.com
