We generally look past the basic cuvee from this large house, in favor of the rose and the ultra brut cuvees. The rich, red-fruity rosé is made via some skin contact with 100% Pinot Noir grapes, rather than being a white wine to which a quantity of red wine has been added. The house's prestige cuvée, Grand Siècle, is a blend of three vintages and a distinct step up in complexity and class.
This non-vintage bottling always seems to do well in our top-of-the-line tastings, and so it has again in this latest examination of the genre. Its baked bread, green apple, citrus peel, stony character is complex enough and the bright edge that supports the wine in the mouth adds greatly to its charms. There is a slight soft, creamy quality as well and if the wine is a bit of "all things to all people", it is also an incredibly pleasurable bubbly for aperitif use or as an accompaniment to light finger foods.
