Burgundy
The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.
The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.
The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.
To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).

The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

The chalky soils of Champagne combined with its frigid growing environment create wines that are electric and salivating. But it’s the creation of bubbles that makes these wines stand out.
The bubbles are formed during a secondary fermentation in bottle, known as Méthode Traditionelle. The longer they age, the more nougat and brioche flavours develop and the finer the bead (bubble) becomes.
In terms of who invented Champagne, the English make a strong case as they worked out the formula for purposely making the fizz happen and their stronger coal-fired glass bottles - resulting from the Industrial Revolution - could hold the pressure. Whereas the French were still bottling in wood-fired glass which wasn’t strong enough and they hadn’t cracked the technique of creating bubbles on purpose.

Styles
Nowhere in the world can emulate the fineness and electric detail of these wines. Non-vintage Champagnes should be enjoyed earlier in their lives, while vintage wines have more structure and can age beautifully. House styles differ too. Blanc des Blancs (100% Chardonnay) offer a more elegant and fragile expression while Blanc des Noirs (100% Pinot and or Meunier) are darker fruited with more obvious structure and power.

Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. The wine is produced by an estate which is over 100 years old, from premium vineyards and spent 9 months in bottle developing a gentle complexity before release. Light, crisp and fun, it's a fizz which won't break the bank and seriously over delivers.
OK so its not the usual Champs-Élysées finish and this stage isn't even the finish line but we have to have a sparkling at some point. Made from 100% Malbec including fruit grown by local producers that Pascal consults to. About 70% is lighter and finer material from the limestone plateau (the causses) and 30% richer and denser fruit from the iron-rich gravelly terraces of the Lot River valley. The vines average 25-30 years and about 85% of the fruit is currently certified organic, with one grower at year 2 in conversion.
Fermented for a total of 20 days, with regular punch-downs for the first 3 or 4 days only. Saved from bankruptcy in 2012 Domaine Chanzy is an estate with renewed ambition. They have built a reputation for producing wines that capture the essence of the diverse Burgundy holdings they oversee with a range that is quality from bottom to top. With winemaker Jean-Baptiste Jessiaume this is a star on the rise and given the astronomical pricing of Burgundy these represent some of the best value drinking around.
The domaine has significant plantings of aligoté of which it produces some of the finest examples in the region and is a feature of the wines from its hometown of Bouzeron
A mix of tonneau and stainless it feels like someone has out a small fan in the glass wtih yellow tree fruit, apple, baking spice and lemony goodness pours out of the gals. This is no skinny aligote thank god, the often aneamic bones replaced with joyous upfront fruit all mouthwatering and juicy. It rolls onto the palate with gusto then crunchy fresh acidity cajouls the fruit cutting through the wonderful richness and electrifying the palate as it cascaded through your mouth. Domaine Goisot Bourgogne Aligote 2022OUTSTANDING - A ripe yet very aligoté nose offers up mostly notes of citrus confit and spice. There is fine mid-palate density to the delicious and lightly stony flavors that deliver fine length on the bone-dry and highly refreshing finale. Gueguen Chablis 2020 375mlCeline Gueguen Brocard and Frederic Gueguen are a refreshing new voice amongst the mineral soils of Chablis. Though their experience runs deep. Celine is the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, the respected Chablis estate where she worked with her husband Frederic for over a decade.
Winegrowing runs in Celine's blood. Plots from her great grandmother established in 1882 have been passed down the line to her. Her mother, also a wine grower instilled a strong work ethic in her daughter. To say wine ran in the family is an understatement.
That classic stoney-Chablis-esq vibe here. Why do we mentione that because a warming climates and changing syle doesn't always present but here it does. Nice balance with the fresh white tree fruits cut by a saline line of acicidity and sprinkled with a little white pepper, quartzy thing going on. Nice little push of fruit out the back with loveley virbancy and purity offset with a little leesy funk.

Everything is by hand here and the wines are uncommonly elegant and round compared to the more rustic versions we are used to seeing.
No oak in this cuvee and it is so much better for it. That typical mulberry and boysenberry fruit leap out of the glass with a touch of licorice interspersed between wild bracken aroma. Approachable and fruity, with a soft, supple texture and dressed with a fine layer of smooth rich tannin. Vibrant and full of energy but still solidly built without feeling cumbersome or heavy. They really pull this off beautifully.

Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvee Reserve 2022From that mad-man Nicolas Potel this is no second thought, left-over grapes, I'll see what I can do, situation for his second label. After starting Domaine de Bellene in 2008, shortly after he launched the maison side working closely with the same growers and domains that Potel had built relationships with over the past 15 years, living and working in Beaune. Like his domaine, he chooses to focus on individual terroirs mainly from old vines (40 years old or older) only working with sites that are BIO certified or at the very least farmed according to the principles of lutte rasionee. This philosophy allows Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision at affordable prices.
The entry-level red Burgundy comes from vineyards in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The vines range in age from 30 to 80 years and are farmed sustainably. The major part of this wine is matured in barriques and the remainder is done in stainless steel. This maintains a pure style with bright fruit and a fine texture.
This looks great in 2022! A heady mix of red and black cherry, some ground sweet spice and bit of black pepper, savoury elements winking at you behind the plush fruit profile. Lovely drive of fruit that rushes your palate slowly fading away revealing a little savoury goodness in some darker spice and fresh crushed herb notes. The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn’t until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. He subsequently leased some mature vineyards of about 40 years of age in both Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, to further expand the domaine’s repertoire.In 2013 Philippe was joined by his daughter Isabelle, who had just completed her viticulture and oenology studies at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune. Whilst Isabelle focusses particularly on the production of the domaine’s white wines, there is no doubt that her addition to the team has helped refine the quality of the wines across the board.

Louis Picamelot Cremant de Bourgogne Brut Les TerroirsBased in Rully and presided over by third-generation winemaker-proprietor Philippe Chautard, Maison Louis Picamelot produces some of the best sparkling wines in Burgundy. Forever in Champagne's shadow, few take Crémant de Bourgogne seriously. But what this Maison is doing is already impressive and well worth open-minded consumers' attention. Makes you smile this wine. There's a generosity of aromatic that leads you through baked pastry, fresh cut stonefruits and then an invogorating punch of crushed stone minerality puffs into view. It's kind of like a Champagne letting it's hair down on the palate as well, genrosity of well-defined fruit is edged with minerality and oyster shell while the fine bead cinches and tucks in the effusive edges. Its got enough in it for the serious-minded fizz drinker but is also playful and generous enough to keep you pulling it out of the fridge for pretth much any pcassion. MICHAEL MCNAMARAThis thing hits it out of the park in terms of delivering quality and value. It doesn’t hold back with packing in the flavour either. The fruit is present and accounted for, with a nice lick of minerality and some back end punch, but what is really striking is the yeasty, brioche, burnt toast mealy characters that immediately greet you as you take your first sniff. It has all the bells and whistles. As a Champagne nerd I love to see that in the wine, as distinctly different to my fetish for Grower Bubbles, give me some of that expressively yeasty goodness. Louis Picamelot Cremant Les Terroirs Rose NVSiren song aromatics of strawberries and cream, a little tarragon and mineral and maybe a little vanilla lead you head first into the glass. So enticing and welcoming and it continues on the palate with the same ebullient fruit held within a soft and pillowy mousse creating an almost sensual decadent impression. Alongside that though is real energy and vigour elevating the fruit and spice (and a little sage) element in the wine. It's so beuatiuflly put together this wine and would leave a number of it's Champagne cousins for dead and ashamed of their pricing. Gorgeous sparkling. MICHAEL MCNAMARA
One of the crew called this “soft and mellow” I can see where that comes from, it certainly has a lovely mouth filling quality and all those billowing soft bubbles provide such a sensual cushioning effect, but the wine lacks nothing for racy energy either. I don't think its soft, I think it's lush!
Also, I love the fine chalkiness that punctuates the fruit. Like its BdB sibling the lights are flashing and the sirens are cranked up, they don’t shy away from the winemaking and let’s be honest, that’s what makes Champa… sparkling wines like this so exciting. Even with that distinct autolytic creaminess the wines overall impression is one of flirtatious elegance. The grapes are directly pressed whole-cluster upon arrival at the winery. Depending on the vintage, gentle filtration and fining are performed before bottling to ensure clarity and precision.

Deep colour, a glossy purple. Ripe, plush and fruitful. Nice undertow of spice, but the array of dark fleshed fruit is what come across most prominently, it's well rounded and fulsome but the underpinned by fresh acidity and fine, sweet tannins. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. In 2022, hailstorms reduced yields by 60%, meaning this year’s wine includes a measure of purchased grapes. The palate is attractively punchy and succulent, its’ satiny texture flecked with stone fruits, rock melon and sweet orange with a nip of reduction tying everything neatly together.
