Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Village 2023Stephane's family has been wheeling and dealing in Beaujolais for generations. Based in Fleurie, his father owned an oenological laboratory and worked as a wine broker where, after completing his studies, Stephane returned to work in the family business as a wine consultant and a winemaker in Chénas. His experience there and history in the region brings a depth of knowledge and intimate detail of the terroirs he now works. That, when combined with Stephane's obvious talent makes for a formidable combination.
Black cherry and bright raspberry with a hit of heady, whole peppercorn spice, touch of cola and lovely burst of five spice that drives the inviting nose home. Super crunchy, raspberry fruit layered in with fine slippery tannins. Bursting with red fruit flavour, bright and bouncy. Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2023 375mlThis mouthwatering crowd-pleaser is named after a grove of cherry trees that flank the vineyard. The fruit is drawn from 30- to 40-year-old Gamay vines, grown in dark granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand, southern Beaujolais. In contrast to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie et al., Chermette aims to produce something light-to-medium-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm.
The winemaking has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks followed by maturation in tank and old oak casks still the order of the day. The nose is so exuberant you could be tasting out of barrel, flush with easy-going, lip-smacking red fruit flecked by red floral notes. The palate tells the same story through waves of vibrant, tangy berries and cherrystone fruit. As always, it is a delicious, moreish wine and fabulous value.

No adds other than a small organic yeast hulls to aid fermentation and a small amount of So2 pre bottling.
Gentle spice, herbaceous alpine edge brings freshness, cranberry and bright cherry fruits. Red spectrum rather than blue black of the spiritual home of Gamay but delicious and dangerously drinkable none the less.

Lucchine is the name of the vineyard that provides the grapes. It is located in the plains at the foot of Pedemonte hills in the heart of the historic Valpolicella Classico area. The Tedeschi Family has been linked to winemaking since 1630. However, it was the purchase of several vineyards in 1824 by Nicolo Tedeschi which laid the foundation for the family's current winemaking business. These are classicaly styled but modern takes with a consistency that few producers can boast.

La Dama Vini Valpolicella Classico 2023I do like Valpolicella, especially when it’s red fruited, balanced, and easy to drink, which is what this wine delivers. Strawberry, white pepper, a dusty frame of tannin, a sweetness to poached strawberry and raspberry, a little blood orange, with a peppery finish of good length. Puts me in mind of Pelaverga in a way, and there’s that low key energy to the wine that makes it so appealing. A little bit of ripe tomato tang, new leather, and lots of red fruited and spicy interest. Established by Gabriele and Miriam Dalcanele in 2006, La Dama represents the new breed of winemakers in the region. Modern, fresh yet compelling wines coaxed from organically farmed vineyards in the fabled commune of Negrar, home to some of the great names including the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli.Their 10 hectare estate has been certified organic since 2015 and works only with the native varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. Oak influence is kept to a minimum in order to ensure the vineyard speaks for itself in the glass.
Opens with wild forest fruits, a touch of red currant flecked throughout and dusted with sweet, peppery spice. Honestly, this is a masterclass in what pet-nat should look like – bright, crunchy, and full of life with a purity of fruit at its core.

Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Fleurie 2022From old vines located on the steep slopes of the highly regarded La Madone vineyard. An outstanding Fleurie that captures the beauty and elegance of the appellation and pairs it with some real depth and dimension. Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.

Pavillon de Chavannes Cote de Brouilly Ambassades 2022The history of Pavillon de Chavannes is deeply intertwined with that of Château Thivin, another esteemed estate in Côte de Brouilly. In 1861, the Jambon-Chanrion family acquired the estate. The pivotal moment came after World War I, when Yvonne Chanrion married Claude Geoffray, heir to Château Thivin. Yvonne brought with her one-third of her family’s prized vineyards and later acquired another third from her sister. While Yvonne and Claude expanded Thivin’s holdings together, they never had children. Upon Yvonne’s passing in 1987, her family’s original vineyard inheritance returned to Paul Jambon of the Jambon-Chanrion family, along with half of the additional lands she and Claude had purchased. La Dama Vini Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca Besi 2019A wine that originated from where the Valpolicella tadition of drying grapes and the freshness and fragrance of grapes pressed during harvest are combined. This gives birth to a wine of great concentration and elegance, where the freshness suprises when countered by the dark, sweet fruits and long persistent palate.
This skirts such a lovely middle-ground and the lighter, fresher style we see from La Dama is given a little oomph and lick of pizzaz that is hard not to love. Pepper and camphor on the nose with dark roasted ground spice and a Campari like citrus flourish. It belies what comes after which seems so pretty and energetic but matched with some lovey dark, broody fruit that swims around a concentrated but focused core. It comes of subtle and persistent and ultimately so readily appealing. A very cool drop!

Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. It is deep, bright and sappy, offering up a nose of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a dollop of fresh thyme and a very pretty base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and deep at the core, with a fine foundation of soil, bright acids, moderate tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. Of all of Daniel's outstanding 2022s, this is certainly the first cuvée I would be reaching for to drink now, as it has a sense of wide open generosity that is not evident with most of his other, more structured wines from this vintage. Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Les Moriers 2021Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Les Moriers shares a border with Poncié, Les Roches and Les Garants and the vines at the top of the vineyard lie a stone’s throw from the winery.
Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. Rising from 260 metres on the Moulin-a-Vent border to 340 metres at the top of the slope, this steep hillside contains two mineral rich soil types: the vines at the top of the slope are on very poor soils of shallow granitic sand; then it becomes heavier in the Bas de Moriers with increasing clay concentration over the granite bedrock.
