  1. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Rouge Chitry 'Constance' 2020
Olivier Morin Bourgogne Rouge Chitry 'Constance' 2020

Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitry

of both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. Olivier Morin likes a long slow fermentation for
the whites, using natural yeasts. The reds are vinified without sulphur until after the malolactic fermentation. JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

2020 Constance rouge Honest and delicious medium bodied Pinot Noir. Generous palate, red berries and delicate tannins. Earthy and savoury finish. Grown on Kimmeridgian limestone terroir. Outstanding value for quality with plenty of personality.

  2. Dirty Three Dirt 3 Pinot Noir 2023
Dirty Three Dirt 3 Pinot Noir 2023
Fruit off the D’Angelo vineyard at Officer, fermented with 50% whole-bunches, so expect it to be perfumed with joss sticks, violets, roses, a little sappy/twiggy and dusty, too, but in a good way. There’s some volume, a bit more oomph with ripe, fleshy and decisive tannins, the fuller-bodied palate flush with dark cherries, roasted tomatoes, amaro and energising, lively acidity. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Deep-ish bright red-purple colour; lots of dried herb bunchy notes on the nose, with echoes of root vegetables and bitter Italian herbs. The wine is full in the mouth and quite firmly structured, bright and youthful, all promising much for the future. Excellent depth of flavour, concentration and potential: a touch of cleansing bitterness at the finish. I would cellar this for a year or two before opening. (D'Angelo vineyard, Officer) (94) HUON HOOKE, The Real Review

In the heart of Gippsland Marcus Satchell and his wife Lisa Sartori craft some of Gippsland best wines with a focus on single site pinot noir. Marcus was a bit of a trailblazer for the region bring the wines of the region into the consciousness of the local Vic wine scene with there open and generous styling and subtle complexity. As a native to the region he was perfectly placed for the inside-line when it came to sourcing the regions best fruit for his wines.

He spent his formative years in the Yarra Valley and overseas forming friendships and working with some of the best in the business. Mentors and friends that he holds dear to his heart drive his ongoing pursuit of making better and better wine. If he's not off consulting, wine judging, pruning vines or talking passionately about his craft, you might find him out in the surf or playing music around town but don't be fooled, the man knows is way around the winery better than most.

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir 2023
Whether it's $20 or $70, you can count on Hoddles Creek to overdeliver! From a year that's produced several superb Yarra pinots, this is up there with the best of them. A bright medium crimson, this leaps from the glass with its beguiling aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and a little whole-bunch derived incense and spice. And boy, is it good on the gently textured and energetic palate. Superfine and persistent tannins round out a beautifully balanced and poised wine that is destined to keep improving for years to come. (98) PHILIP RICH

Onannon Tuerong Robinson Pinot Noir 2022
A savoury and brooding wine with dark red fruits wrapped in woodsy, herbal spice. It's earthy in that forest floor after rain type of way with plenty of wholebunch giving sinew to it's frame and a distinctive savoury injection. There's a little, press of powdery tannin on the finish. It's a little wild and inward but if you like your pinots like this it's going to be right up your alley. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

  6. Onannon Main Ridge Tudibaring Pinot Noir 2022
Onannon Main Ridge Tudibaring Pinot Noir 2022

So pretty and appealing thanks to its up-front red cherries and spice flavours. At first quite fruit-sweet, then other elements come into play: tangy, tart, pomegranate-like acidity, a touch of menthol. The oak is oh-so-subtle, adding some background nuances to the lighter-framed palate with lacy tannins. This is lovely. All fruit is destemmed, cold soaked for seven days in a carbonic environment and spends six weeks on skins, then pressed straight to oak, 15% new. (95) JANE FAULKNER Wine Companion

Red fruit, pimento, cinnamon and spice, poached strawberry and rhubarb, a little cedar oak. It’s all red fruit, some pomegranate and tamarind tang, light dusty and peppery tannin, a quiet sappy succulence, with a bright and zesty finish of excellent length. Very good. 7. Melbourne Gin Company Dry Gin 700ml
Melbourne Gin Company Dry Gin 700ml

Frank Moorhouse in his book Martini - a memoir states, "Every time it is served, the martini represents a journey towards an unattainably ideal drink". The idea of endlessly pursuing a perfection that does not exist is something well known to passionate winemakers. Having a winemaking background we thought we would delve into the mysteries of gin production. This was largely brought about by our fascination with martinis and all things gin.
The notion of the "unattainable ideal drink" led us into a series of trials and experiments and we have become fully immersed in the alchemy of batch distillation and the extraction of exotic and local botanicals. The MGC doffs its hat to London Dry Gin with the two major components being juniper berries and coriander seed. There are 11 botanicals in total (not including a lot of love) with the grapefruit peel and rosemary coming from the garden at Gembrook Hill Vineyard. The other botanicals are macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle and organic navel orange, which are all sourced from Australia. The exotics in the mix are angelica root, orris root and cassia bark.

Each botanical is distilled separately and then blended to our recipe - essentially a winemakers approach. We use a copper pot baine-marie alembic still. A still traditionally used for making perfume. This allows us to preserve the delicate nature of the botanicals we work with. The final component is the water used to break the gin back. We use Gembrook rainwater which is pure and fresh and allows the botanicals to shine through. At only 60kms from Melbourne this local source contributes to the definition of the unique "Melbourne Dry Gin" style.

The MGC is not chill filtered. We didn't want to take out the oils that contribute so much to the aromatics and mouth feel of the gin. So when the gin is very cold the oils become slightly insoluble and form a light haze. The French use the word louche to describe this. In a different context someone who is louche is of a shady character! Each bottle is numbered to reflect the small batches in which it is made. ANDREW MARKS, Distiller & Winemaker

Onannon Red Hill Harrisons Road Pinot Noir 2022
There’s plenty of whole bunch character, though the fruit here is up to the task. Dark raspberry, cherry, peppery and spicy, cardamom pod perfume, with a little toasty oak. Good flavour, density and weight, a dry grip to tannin with the graphite character of whole bunch as a positive, and the finish is long and firm. Nicely done. Very good wine. 16. Herno Gin 500ml
    Herno Gin 500ml
The Herno Gins are contemporary gind in a classic mould with some native botanical added. Meadowsweet is the most unique and has a somewhat subtle aroma reminiscent to almond. it is, most importantly, a traditional component of Scandinavian Meads as well as wines and preserves.

Among other it has been awarded with IWSC World’s best London Dry Gin, World’s best Gin & Tonic and a Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits competition.

There is a sweet grassy/floral element with savoury coriander and juniper to the fore. The flavours ebb and flow on the palate gently pushing and pulling between savoury corriander/cassia bark and sweet vanilla. There is an almost confectioned element but it is soft and beautifully done. The flavours are long and lingering and there is a crunchy black pepper, green herb spice element on the close. PWS

  19. Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir 2021
Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir 2021
The most structured offering in the Quealy stable – the tannins are textural with seemingly more fruit weight. It still has the vivacity of the ’21 vintage, yet incorporates hints of sweet and tart rhubarb, dark cherries, mocha and dried herbs plus cedar oak flavour. The palate doesn’t quite flesh out, even if it is medium bodied, as the acidity is keeping everything reined in, bar the slightly bitter, charred radicchio character on the finish, which adds to the mouthfeel and pleasure of drinking.
    (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Strong release. Both woodsy spice and oak notes aplenty but with the fruit to support it. Back cherries, strawberries, toast and coffee grounds, with cedar and dried herb notes over the top. Both inherently complex and inherently bold, even at 12.6% alc. Savoury to the point of bitter, but not. Firm-ish. It’s not for drinking now; it’s built to be matured.  (93+) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Complex foresty, earthy, leaf-litter aromas and flavours. Peppery and Campari-like wholebunch touches. There’s an individualism and singular character in this wine. Very enjoyable."

GOLD MEDAL, 95/100 (International Wine Challenge, London)

The generous, savoury, well-structured 2019 vintage (5*) was estate-grown at Bendigo and matured in French oak casks (33 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is full-bodied and supple, with concentrated, complex flavours, showing excellent ripeness and harmony, and a long finish. Drink now or cellar. This wine is a Classic. 5 Stars - Classic - MICHAEL COOPER'S BUYERS GUIDE

This is powerfully graceful with stunning complexity; the enticing bouquet shows dark cherry, tapenade, smoked game, truffle and cedary oak characters. The concentrated palate delivers terrific fruit richness with fleshy texture and beautifully melded tannins, finishing sumptuous and structured. Multi-layered and hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2034. $80.00. Aug 2022. (97) SAM KIM, Wine Orbit

A single vineyard wine made exclusively from The Canyon Vineyard at Bendigo and labelled as The Canyon only in vintages when it is exceptional. Beautiful floral aromas with elegant berry fruits, spice and dried herbs. The palate is elegantly opulent with ripe fruits, great acidity, ample tannins and excellent length. Remarkably ageworthy. When opened in its youth, The Canyon Pinot Noir may take a little time in the glass to unveil the full depth of flavours and complexity.

  30. Escarpment Pahi Pinot Noir 2021
    Escarpment Pahi Pinot Noir 2021

The 2021 Pahi Pinot Noir has a gorgeous nose that's totally expressive and pure in its outlay of aroma, with Pink Lady apples, pomegranate pearls, layers of red cherry, white strawberry, star anise, a hint of arnica/mint and a ripple of sumac and blood orange/ginger spice through the finish. Superb, gorgeous with lovely energy. The nose is laced with freshly turned red earth, which is crazy because there is no "freshly turned red earth" in the vineyard, yet it is ferruginous, iodine-y, etc., which carries through all the 2021 single-vineyard Pinots. Tannins are silky. With 58% whole bunch, there's "big bunch energy," joked winemaker Tim Bourne. I agree.13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Pahi tends to have a lifted perfume—"'Te Muna Road perfume' we call that," says Tim. Grapes were picked on April 3 and spent 25 days on skins. Clone 5 and Abel were used. Aging was in 25% new oak for 20 months, racked once, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. (95) ERIN LARKIN,. The Wine Advocate

An enticing fragrance of fresh dark cherries and dried herbs, plum and sweet wood with a light smoke touch. There’s a gentle perfume and floral frame. On the palate firm touch with a core of ripe dark berried fruits for contrast. There’s some subtle power with tannins and acidity framing the wine nicely and a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Firm and dry, lengthy and well made, I feel this wine needs some cellar time to complete its harmony. Best drinking from 2025 through 2032+. CAM DOUGLAS MW

Domaine Chanzy Mercurey 'Les Bussieres' 2021
We are pretty excited that the wines of Domaine Chanzy will be finding a permanent home in Australia. They offer some of the best value Burgundy anywhere and the quality, we feel, will only continue to get better. Recently the estate was purchased by a wealthy French family who also own Chateau Signac in the Rhone. They have injected both energy, time and cash to the already modern winery and have allowed its dynamic winemaking duo free reign. These are exciting times and Domaine Chanzy and we can't wait to see where they go from here.

Sophisticate nose of raspberry, crushed strawberry that leads with dried citrus peel and stoney, mineral notes that fleck the lifted nose. Mid-weight with lovely drive but not overblown or heavy. The minerally, flinty, palate keeps everything fresh and vibrant with a lovely purity but also a wild, untamed nature as well. Its got the best of rustic charm and purity combined with a generosity of soft red fruits. Lovely wine. Really lovely.

    Girardin Bourgogne Rouge 2022

The family's winemaking history goes back centuries, but it was Vincent Girardin who really put the name on the international map during the late 20th century, gaining a reputation for crafting expressive, polished wines — particularly from the Côte de Beaune, with a focus on Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, and Chassagne-Montrachet.

Today, under the guidance of a new generation and a talented team led by Eric Germain (long-time winemaker), Maison Vincent Girardin continues to produce elegant, terroir-driven wines. The philosophy is built around respect for the vineyard, using sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention in the winery to let each site speak clearly.

The nose is vibrant and alluring, revealing aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries, layered with delicate floral notes of violets, subtle earthy nuances, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegantly textured, with silky tannins and bright acidity enhancing the flavors of juicy red berries, a touch of licorice, and a refined mineral edge. The finish is smooth, fresh, and well-balanced, making it a versatile and food-friendly choice.

Beyond the hill of Corton – almost Hautes Côtes.
Great example of Bourgogne from this Pernand domaine. Lovely crisp, bright, crunchy fruit. Great purity but there is also a freshness and acidity which makes you want to drink more. Not at all hefty but lifted, delicate and showing so much finesse. Well worth considering this for your ‘drinking’ Pinot. GREAT VALUE, ANDY HOWARD MW, jancisrobinson.com

Ultra-fresh aromas of red pinot fruit, spice and more discreet earth nuances lead to equally delicious and more finely textured middleweight flavors that possess notably better volume on the better balanced and sneaky long finish. This is quite good for what it is and worth checking out. BURGHOUND

Hmm – that’s a beautiful nose – very perfumed. Fine, open, easy but deliciously complete. Too – a Bourgogne of real finesse. Top! BILL NANSON

  44. Dawson James Pinot Noir 2020
    Dawson James Pinot Noir 2020

The 2020 Pinot Noir is sourced from the Meadowbank vineyard, in the Upper Derwent Valley, in Tasmania. The vineyard site experiences warm days and cool nights, largely unaffected by sea breeze, imbuing the wines with a depth and density of flavor that is bolstered by the spine of juicy acidity (courtesy of the cool night-time temperatures). The wine itself is savory, littered with autumnal undergrowth, enoki mushroom, black cherries and tobacco leaf. The palate is more succulent than the nose would lead us to believe, and it is rich with umami inflections of bone broth and quince paste. Very good, serious, grown-up Pinot Noir, from two very accomplished makers (Pete Dawson and Tim James). (95+) ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

Sourced from a portion of the Meadowbank vineyard curated to the particular specifications of winemakers Peter Dawson and Tim James, whose unobtrusive winemaking ensures real purity of fruit. Rose petal, dusty red earth and red fruit aromas leap from the glass. The silky, seductive palate is all strawberries and cream, framed by gently gripping tannins. (96) DECANTER
