Antidoto is barely made – given the lightest, cool, simple and short fermentation in concrete vat (fermentation finishes off skins once a certain density is realised). Maturation is gentle and matter-of-fact, in clean old 600 litre barrels for 10 months. 70% of the fruit is from very old vines (there is no white fruit in this blend), and stems are excluded. Bertrand is trying to render old vine character as deftly as possible, in particular to avoid over-extraction and excess concentration: “avoiding the tannin avalanche”. Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Les Moriers 2021Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. There was some rusticity and wilderness in the 2021 Sedal, a meaty blend of Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and 5% Viura from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, co-fermented with some 30% full clusters in open-top stainless steel with 21 days of maceration and matured in oak vats and 500-liter French and Austrian oak barrels for 10 months. Casa Rojo Ribera del Duero Tinta Fina Tempranillo 2019100% Tinto Fino, from the towns of Villálvaro, Sotillo de la Ribera, Moradillo, Hontoria, Peñafiel, Quintana del Pidio, Anguix and Curiel de Duero. Average altitude of 850 to 900 meters, all in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The grapes come from old vineyards between 35 and 100 years old. In French oak barrels for 428 days, having undergone malolactic fermentation in barrels for 10% of the final blend.
Smashed red and black fruits with that blue-note hit and spicy oak to top it off and little highlights of smokey, leather notes make for a heady and complex nose. Again, plenty of concentration for the mixed, wild berry fruit profile but never at the lack of freshness or energy. Firm but plush tannins grip the black fruits plastering them to the palate and driving home to a full and rich finish. Definitely see some oak here but it suits the style perfectly. PWS

Vinos en Voz Baja ‘Costumbres’ Tinto Rioja DOCa 2020The red 2020 Costumbres Tinto has a captivating and floral nose denoting elegance, freshness and balance in a warm region and a warm year. Carlos Mazo reckons this is around 80% Garnacha and 10% each Tinta Velasco (an obscure local grape) and Tempranillo that, despite the 14.7% alcohol, feels very balanced and even fresh. The tannins are very fine and the finish dry and chalky. The vines are now certified organic. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021. Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2021I love the Cigliano di Sopra 2021 Chianti Classico. This fabulous wine comes from an exciting estate that I absolutely recommend you seek out. Made with organic Sangiovese, it offers a punchy and bright fruit profile with cassis, red berry and blue flower that pop from the glass. The wine offers balance, freshness and an elegantly streamlined style. It feels transparent, almost fragile. Fruit is selected from across a seven-hectare site, and within that space, three hectares were planted in the 1970s and 1980s. The rest were planted more recently from 2004 on. With exactly 11,586 bottles made, this is a thrilling discovery. (94) MONICA LARNER
I feel like a new benchmark for fine wine is being set by Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari of Cigliano di Sopra in San Casciano Val di Pesa. These young winemaking colleagues studied enology together in Florence and both worked with Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr at Domaine de la Côte in California and at other prestigious wine estates in Italy. Winemaking is hands-on and artisanal in the stone underground cellar of Maddalena's family Tuscan villa. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and I want to underline the sheer excitement I feel for these wines and this promising up-and-coming estate.
