P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021The P & A wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.
This little beauty is crafted by Potel's partner in crime Stephane Aviron who brings his consdiderable talents to the table. there is an elegance and purity to the wine with underlying terroir drive that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who tried Nicola or Stephane's wines.
Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. Subtle notes of rosemary come from a thoughtful use of whole bunch. This overdelivers hands down on its humble price point, no need to second guess here. GABRIELLE POY2021Grenache, shirazFrance358 -
Delas Cote du Rhone 2022 375mlA serious Cotes-du-Rhone. Full forest berry fruit with delicate spice, bitter chocolate and licorice notes. Impressive depth and some real structure on the full-bodied palate. I love the way the generous, rather fine tannins carry the long, spicy and fresh finish. A cuvee based on 60% grenache, mostly from the Vaucuse region, with about 30% syrah from the Gard and small amounts of mourvedre and other traditional grape varieties. ELM Bomba Rosso 2022Emerging winemaker Madeleine Marson has launched her first wines under the ELM label. ELM wines pay tribute to the upbringing Madeleine and her two sisters, Emily and Laura (together ELM), had in the Yarra Valley and Heathcote, where winemaking and the traditions of the Italian family table were strongly held. A long (official and unofficial) apprenticeship under the instruction of her father, Mario Marson, followed, and together they now run Vinea Marson in Heathcote. There, Madeleine got her hands on some parcels of fruit from Heathcote and the Alpine Valleys and crafted these playful takes on Italian family favourites.
ELM ‘Bomba Rosso’ takes an Australian approach to Friulian blends, with Heathcote Shiraz’s bright fruit concentration married with the enticing savouriness of Nebbiolo. A complex nose of red berries, blackcurrants, liquorice and dried herbs is followed by a rich and intense palate with dry and chewy tannins typical of the Nebbiolo variety.

Paisley Wines Boombox Shiraz 2021
If you’re old enough, you’d remember making mix tapes to give to friends or slip into the cassette player in your car, or whatever. My tape of choice, if I was feeling flush was a TDK SA-X (chrome), or even an MA-X (metal setting), and if poor, maybe a TDK AD or a lowly D. All very nice. But thank heavens for Spotify.
A big juicy dark hit of flavour here, along with raspberry juice, mint, a bit of earthy coal-like stuff, some chewy chalk-like grip, and a warm and generous finish of good length. Doesn’t seem to have much oak influence, just a riot of bouncy earthy Barossa fruit. Good fun. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Handpicked Regional Selection Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023Founded on the idea of crafting outstanding wines from the world's best regions, Handpicked Wines carefully owns or partners with vineyards across Australia and beyond - from the cool reaches of Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania to iconic international regions like Barolo and Marlborough.
Their winemaking philosophy is all about site expression, sustainable farming, and detailed winemaking that best expresses the character of each of their wines origins. With a portfolio that spans everyday drinking wines to rare, single vineyard bottlings. This wine falls into their regional range and is a selection of declassified fruit off their single vineyard expressions, contract growers and managed sites.
It's a stellar little drop leaning into the autumnal and filigree nature of Yarra pinot but with a little more cushion and flesh that makes it so appealing. Red currant, a touch of wild strawberry and some forest fruit mix leap out of the glass with white pepper spice and touch of clove warmly greet you. Its mid-weight in style with some lovely, superfine tannins that etch the surface of the glossy fruit. There is just a kiss light toasty oak but you could barely tell while it subtly frames the pure fruits. Another pinot where you have to ask how do they make it for the money?

Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021
One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.
While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.

Wickhams Road Yea Pinot Noir 2023
I forget what Franco said on his little back label spiel, as I’ve given the bottle away, though it was something along the lines of ‘High acidity from this site, so no need for adds’.
It’s a bit spicy and mulchy, poached strawberry and raspberry, a little mint and floral perfume. It’s crisp, sappy, lively, a smudgy feel to tannin, slightly smoky and tobacco-laced, with a juicy finish of good length, gentle dusty tannin trailing. Nice.. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
Cooler and drier than their Hoddles Creek vineyards, this Yea Valley pinot is the most reticent and fine-boned of this year's three Wickhams pinots. A light, bright red, this has scents of redcurrants, a little strawberry and blood orange. The palate is compact and very nicely balanced, with gently grippy tannins suggesting that this will need another six to 12 months to unfurl and grow into itself. Domaine Lalaurie Rivage Blanc IGP Coteaux de Narbonne 2021Following their father's death in 2020, twin sisters Camille and Audrey are forging ahead as the 10th generation to run this gorgeous family farm near Narbonne in the Languedoc. As an enologist Camille has overseen a significant jump in quality by introducing modern winemaking techniques after working vintages abroad. They are investing in revitalising the old cellar and focused on biodiversity and achieving close to organic farming practices. Her wine style is sparkly, clean and honest, delivering impeccable quality across the range.
A delicate, fresh and mineral wine from twin sisters Camille and Audrey, Rivage Blanc is racy and driven by Sauvignon Blanc, in a restrained European style. Floral citrus mingles with grapefruit juice and a very fine cut of refreshing acidity, a great example of Camille's clever, frank wine making style.

Holm Oak Protege Pinot Noir 2024like this style of pinot. Built for drinkin' not thinkin' and one which will take a chill in the fridge should the mercury dictate such an action. First Drop Mothers Milk Shiraz 2021
2021 was a fine vintage in the Barossa. There is no doubt that this wine will improve but damn it's delicious now. Deep plum and cherry fruits, plenty of spicy depth with hints of licorice, dark chocolate and earth. It's plush yet has crunch and cadence as it races off with memories of maraschino cherries, spice and roasting meats. (94) DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion
Barossa and Eden Valley, raised in seasoned French oak. It’s been a while between milks here at TWF, the last one reviewed was the 2017.Dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry, kind of like a pie of those fruits, with a little spicy crust, and gentle tarry earthiness. It’s medium to full-bodied, plenty of juicy dark fruit, a little sage and savoury stuff, supple tannin, and a finish of good length. Vibrant and fruity. Easy to get into. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
This is really good Barossa shiraz. It has all that Barossa charm with satsuma plumb, sweet blackberry conserve and hints of maraschino cherry too, while staying vibrant and lifted. Plenty of depth and concentration on the pallet and it doesn't shy away from its origins but it does it deftly by remaining light on its feet, cut with fine tannin and that fans out gently into subtle, chocalaty, framing oak. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!
This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

De Bortoli Estate Pinot Noir 2023From three, mainly south and east facing sites, all planted in the early 1990's. A light, bright ruby red. Red plum, cherries and pomegranate combine with some crushed flowers and white pepper in this stylish and, always, well priced wine. The palate is light to medium bodied with those aforementioned red fruits, some underbrush and very fine, persistent tannins. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion
The Estate Vineyard wines are elegant, handcrafted wines that reflect the unique characters of the De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate in Dixons Creek where this essentially single vineyard wines from mature vine is made with minimal handling and thoughtful winemaking. Exceptional quality
with a distinct sense of place.
There is a lovely smokey cedary thing going on here, its really inviting giving the pure red fruits and soft sweet spices a lovely counterpoint. A touch of darky cherry and a little wild strawberry as well. That smoky things continues on the palate with combo of black and red forest fruits to the fore and a little garrigue like finish that close it out. Inspired by the new wave ‘Vino Joven’ wines of the old world, Young Blood Shiraz is released as a cheeky youngster with just a brief barrel maturation to showcase structure and varietal character, while retaining freshness and finesse. After 7 days maceration post-ferment, the wine is gently basket pressed and racked to stainless vats (50%) and old French oak hogsheads (50%) for 6 months maturation. Young Blood Shiraz is pure, uncomplicated enjoyment.

Amen Break Cabernet Franc 2021There's certainly a bustle in the hedgerow here, with blackberry, black raspberry, leaf, dried roses and pencils. Medium-bodied, cool acidity, a distinctly 'mineral' feel, intense small berried dark fruit, graphite tannin, a little sundried tomato and raspberry pip, and a spicy and gently bitter amaro/sappy finish of excellent length.
