Deep colour, a glossy purple. Ripe, plush and fruitful. Nice undertow of spice, but the array of dark fleshed fruit is what come across most prominently, it's well rounded and fulsome but the underpinned by fresh acidity and fine, sweet tannins. Nice wine. Some airy, spring forest aromas, little poke and prod of minerality, a subtly sappy feel. Yeah, nice wine! ROSCOE

; Hua Nui, Winery and Pencarrow. The fruit is a blend of Clones 667, 777, 115, 10/5, MV6 and Abel. All handpicked with 5% whole cluster. A period of cold soak followed by wild fermentations and gentle pumpovers and plunging. The wine is pressed to French Oak barrels and left to mature for a period of 10 months during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and add complexity.

There are seven single vineyards of Ghost Rock, per se, this is one of them, and it gets made each year. Wild ferment, no additions, no filtering and no fining, a touch of sulphur for preserving. Organic farmed.

It’s got softness and spread, a suppleness and flow, dark cherry, earthiness, sappy botanical elements, a touch of game meat and woody-savoury elements. It’s so pure and yet rich, a generosity in its layers of flavour, aroma, texture. It’s got a faint core of crushed rock minerality too. A wild streak, perhaps, lending charm and personality. SPECIAL BUY - A single-vineyard wine from the Strathmore Vineyard, planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late 1990s; 20% whole bunches. Matured in 30% new puncheons and barriques. A deepish crimson ruby. More darkly fruited and concentrated than last year's version. Dark cherries, damson plums, peony and spice on the bouquet. Saturates the palate, which is concentrated, structured, fleshy and very long. It's so good now but will get even better over the next six to eight years and probably longer. Another superb 2023 Geelong pinot from the two Bens. (97) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

Last year’s release was made with MV6 and Abel clone pinot noir, on vines planted in 1998 at Sutherlands Creek in the Moorabool Valley. I assume this release is the same.

It presents a bed of fruit-filled flavour, all macerated and strewn with herbs, and while it sings and impresses through the mainstay of the palate, it’s the finish that really moves the bar higher. This wine pushes flavour well beyond the point where it had every reason to stop. The winemaker probably won’t like me saying this, but it’s a Pinot Noir that feels very Australian, in a positive way. It’s varietal, but it feels “very MV6”. Its flavours nestle into the palate, rather than being over-eager to lift off and out. It has that feel of being settled, like a cat after it’s finished kneading your lap. And yet it has that finish, that extra soar. It’s pretty special. (95+) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

A vibrant cherry red in the glass. there’s lovely complex aromatics here, dried herbs, blueberry, bramble, sap, Asian spice and ferrous earth. Bright and lively on the palate with lashings of red and blue fruits, tangy, briary acidity and savoury, supple and textured tannins. Long, layered, mouth-filling and pure in flavour. Boysenberry, strawberry and red cherry flavours come threaded with sweet, twiggy spice, cedarwood oak also nestled neatly therein. This is well structured in general and will both hold and mature for a number of years, but it’s also readily accessible right now; it’s arguably the most accessible wine in the Mulline range this year. SPECIAL VALUE - A single-vineyard wine from the Surf Coast, the vineyard planted in 2001; 40% whole bunches and matured in 25% new barriques. A bright crimson ruby. From a cool vineyard and it shows, in a good, way. Aromas of strawberries, cranberries and a little spice. You barely notice the whole bunches, which are already integrating into the wine. Elegantly wrought, delicate and persistent on the palate. Thoughtful winemaking here and I like how Ben has worked with the fruit, rather than trying to make something the wine isn't. Pretty and lifted aromas of dried herbs, sap, spice, cherry, wild raspberry and mossy under-brush. Bright, lively and crunchy in flavour. There's a drive of snappy red fruits and bramble, along with chalky, grippy tannins and pointed acidity. Quite linear at the moment and will benefit from some bottle age. Sercial is the driest style of Madeira and this 10-year-old has vibrant acidity. A rich tawny colour with aromas of fruit cake, nuts, dried orange peel and citrus freshness. An initial figgy richness on the palate gives way to notes of fresh citrus, toasted almonds, walnuts and savoury umami notes. Finishes crisp and dry with a delicious salty tang. This type of Madeira won't improve with bottle age, but an open bottle can keep for several months. DECANTER

100% Sercial grown on mixed volcanic soils and hand-harvested mid to late September. Fermented with some whole-clusters with skin maceration in lagares with native yeasts. Matured in canteiro; aged in balseiro (large cask) and pipas (pipes) for a minimum of 10 years. Winemaker: Humberto Jardím. Vegan. TA 5.8 g/l, pH 3.52, RS 55.1 g/l.

A seductive nose of spiced black and dark red cherries, berry compote and subtle earthy scents of moss lure you in. The nose excites for what's to come. A mesh of flesh and spice is corralled by silty tannins with raspberry licorice accents. There's a velvety richness to the texture which ignites the senses. There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. I pretty much never drink any samples, because it’s not a good habit to get into, though maybe a few swallows might make a summer while I’m actually tasting, but hey, that’s what I call the FCE (Full Consumer Experience). Anyway, I had a few glasses of this last night while watching the documentary about Ennio Morricone – “Ennio” – which is currently streaming on Stan. Very good too, and this, in a way, while not Italian, seemed a suitable style of wine for that show. I cooked my children some duck breast for tea, with jasmine rice, steamed greens and plum sauce, but I didn’t eat any of that, though this wine would have been most excellent with it. I had a piece of bread with some Laughing Cow cheese on it. Economies must be made.

Fine, kind of stony, perfumed, cherry and red fruit, gentle spiced oak, something a little earthy/autumnal too. It’s light to medium-bodied, pleasantly sappy, with a good crunch to acidity, really pleasing pumice stone tannin, and a offers a juicy/savoury finish of excellent length, with a little blood orange bite. It’s cool, it’s succulent, it’s got some slurp to it too. Purple fruits, mulberry, dark cherry, sour and tart pops of pomegranate jewels and a wash of alpine herbs and light white pepper over it all. It goes the distance, it feels svelte and coils serpent-like through the palate. A savoury undertow of brambles and earth also there. It does many, many things, and just feels right and righteous overall. Oh boy. (95) MIKE BENNIE

2022 - There's an air of serious intent to this wine. It's both inherently complex and impressively powered, its array of fruit, stalk and spice notes ricocheting from one corner of your mouth to another. The quality deal is then sealed by the manner in which firm sheets of tannin lock the wine's various components into place. This is a wine of gravitas. (96) JAMES HALLIDAY’S WINE COMPANION

Part of our new high-altitude Beechworth range. A brand-new Pinot Noir for us. An earlier drinking blend comprised of sites across Beechworth, predominantly from our new high-altitude Palmer vineyard in the heart of Stanley. Selections from Brunnen and Indigo vineyards provide a lovely combination of spice and plush red fruit.

A cool growing season, with ample time for flavour development. Whole berry ferment with gentle maceration, this wine is concentrated and complex yet shows the bright acidity and delicacy of high-altitude Pinot Noir. Savoury spice and tart red fruit softened by a subtle 15% new oak component.

Peppery, herbal, lifted and grippy. A good combo of things when it strolls through a sluice of tart cherry juice and cranberry tang. Tightly coiled too, a vigorous and streamlined pinot noir, albeit it has expressive nature, a distinct personality and flair. Refreshing all up too. Detailed in its way, showing fruit, spice, savoury elements harmoniously married, though you could say the snips of whole bunch make a mark. Very good. (95) MIKE BENNIE

The broodier and deeper of the three single-site pinots this release. Scary Gully is the oldest site with the most elevation. The essence of a long ripening season is cast here with black cherry and plum, compact and dense. There's a cosy up-in-a-log cabin appeal to it, all crunchy and wild, confident in its expression, with ample spice and twiggy herbs, thyme and bay. It feels unperturbed and complete. 2020- Slender plum and cherry – pretty and gently perfumed. It has lovely line and length without ever going broad or surrendering its prettiness. Still, it’s no wallflower – there’s drive and persistence of flavour – and even the gentle finish, with a frame of stalky grip, persists and lingers. Deceptively powerful. (96) DECANTER

Ripe deeply pitched aromas include those of pungent earth, various dark berries and whiff of spice. The delicious, caressing and supple middleweight flavors possess a relatively refined texture for what this is though it contrasts with the slightly rustic finale...it is a quality Bourgogne. 2022 yielded a ripe and fruity, polished and approachable Bourgogne rouge from domaine vines, supple, plush and immediately engaging. I love the balance achieved, the fluidity on the palate, the seamless acids intermingled with very fine-grained tannins. Length is excellent. Very refined and sophisticated wine, one that delivers well above its humble appellation, and drinking well even now, though cellerable into the late '20s without concern. Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitry

of both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits. Olivier Morin likes a long slow fermentation for

So pretty and appealing thanks to its up-front red cherries and spice flavours. At first quite fruit-sweet, then other elements come into play: tangy, tart, pomegranate-like acidity, a touch of menthol. The oak is oh-so-subtle, adding some background nuances to the lighter-framed palate with lacy tannins. This is lovely. All fruit is destemmed, cold soaked for seven days in a carbonic environment and spends six weeks on skins, then pressed straight to oak, 15% new. (95) JANE FAULKNER Wine Companion

Red fruit, pimento, cinnamon and spice, poached strawberry and rhubarb, a little cedar oak. It’s all red fruit, some pomegranate and tamarind tang, light dusty and peppery tannin, a quiet sappy succulence, with a bright and zesty finish of excellent length. Very good.
