Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni DOCG 2019The 2019 Barolo San Giovanni is the more powerful of the estate's two Barolos. It offers up scents of mocha, spice, dark cherry, plum and leather. There's a bit more new oak too, which adds intensity as well as volume. The San Giovanni emerges form the oldest vines on the property, but I have to admit I like the straight Barolo a bit more because of its greater finesse. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni DOCG 2020
The 2020 Barolo San Giovanni is fabulous. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best editions I can remember tasting. Dark cherry, cedar, new leather, incense, mocha and dried herbs all open in the glass. The 2020 is rich and deep, but with greater finesse than in the past. Intense savory, balsamic and mineral notes resonate on the super-classic finish. New oak is down to about 40% from the 50% or so of previous years. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Fratelli Revello Barolo 2020The 2020 Barolo is everything a wine in this peer group should be: open-knit, inviting and ready to drink. Macerated red cherry, sweet spice, cedar and tobacco are pushed forward to round things out. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Nervy minerality with fresh raspberries, strawberries and white pepper. Medium body with juicy, chalky tannins and a pithy finish. Drink or hold. ZEKUN SHUAI, JamesSuckling.com

Paolo Scavino Barolo 2020The 2020 Barolo is seriously beautiful. Pliant and creamy, with terrific depth, the 2020 impresses with its bold, openknit personality. A burst of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, mint and spice lend notable character to this decidedly exuberant Barolo from the Scavino family. ANTONIO GALLONI
Aromas of ripe berry, blue flower dog rose, camphor and spice form the nose on the 2020 Barolo from Paolo Scavino. Smooth and savory, the palate delivers juicy cherry, licorice and a hint of espresso alongside smooth, almost silky tannins. Drink through 2030. Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2018Monforte d'Alba. 20 days on the skins.
Concentrated lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury and concentrated with fully integrated oak notes adding a spicy edge to the wine. Plenty of sour-cherry fruit on the palate. Generous and youthful with a layer of long, polished tannins. Perhaps the most approachable of their 2018 Barolos, but also has potential to age. WALTER SPELLER
The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about. Dried herbs, iron chalk, white pepper, crushed flowers and mint all grace this inward, brooding Barolo from Veglio. A whole range of savory, earth and mineral notes abound. Francesco Rinaldi Barolo DOCG 2018The 2018 Barolo is a delicate, pretty wine with plenty of immediacy and overall appeal. Crissante Alessandria Barolo Capalot 2018The 2018 Barolo Capalot is elegant and polished. There are some youthful Nebbiolo contours that need to soften, but overall the 2018 impresses with its energy and layered personality. Cinnamon, blood orange, cedar, mint and rose petal flesh out nicely with a bit of coaxing. Slightly advanced notes suggest the Capalot is more of a medium-term proposition. Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2019
22 days on the skins and aged for two years in French barriques of which 25% were new.
Lustrous and just mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet raspberry with savoury, salty, minerally notes and a little rich on the nose. With aeration there are hints of mint. Succulent, yet fresh, fruit layered with lots of clayey tannins. Closes up on the finish, demonstrating that it needs much more time. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com
Veglio's 2019 Barolo Castelletto is redolent of spice, menthol, licorice, sage and lavender. Incisive Monforte tannins and bright acids give the Castelletto its shape and a good bit of overall drive as well. I would cellar this for a few years and see what happens. ANTONIO GALLONI
This lovely Barolo has aromas of small red fruit, licorice and hazelnut. Reflecting the nose, the linear, full-bodied palate features juicy raspberry, crushed strawberry, star anise and toasted hazelnut alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. It still needs time to unwind. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2019
25 days on the skins and aged for two years in French barrique of which 25% was new.
Lustrous and just mid ruby. Closed and brooding on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Gorgeous and fresh on the palate but very backward and just hinting at red currant and raspberry. Firm but attractive tannins add real chew to the whole. The oak is practically indiscernible. Very slow to come out, elegant and complex but patience is needed. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com
The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. That's a pretty appealing combination in my book. ANTONIO GALLONI
Made from vines planted in 1950, this has aromas of berry, oak-driven spice, camphor and citrusy notes. Showing structure and a weightless finesse, the elegant, full-bodied palate delivers ripe cranberry, Morello cherry, licorice, coconut and coffee bean set against fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it full of energy. Drink 2026–2044 KERIN O'KEEFE

Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2020The 2020 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most closed wines in this range from Veglio. Then again, we are in Monforte. Veins of saline-infused dark fruit, crushed rocks, herbs, mint and coffee open with a bit of coaxing. Nervy, focused tannins wrap it all together in style. I would give the 2020 a few years to soften, as the tannins are quite imposing today. I love the sheer vibrancy here. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Precise, well-composed and spicy with aromas of forest berries, herbs, iron and dried orange peel. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2020
For co-owner Alessandro Veglio, 2020 is ‘a 2018 with more flesh’. Gattera's limestone soils provide good structure. A quite stern nose of cherry kernel, rhubarb, fresh violet and blood orange is followed by a savoury and filigree palate, with a texture to the tannins of rare elegance. Full and broad on the finish, with hints of cherry kernel. ALDO FIORDELLI, www.decanter.com
The 2020 Barolo Gattera is a dark, at times somber, La Morra Barolo. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice, dried herbs and mocha all meld together. Pliant and deep, with notable concentration and breadth on the palate, the Gattera is a fine example of this site. Today, the 2020 is a bit closed, but I see that as a positive. ANTONIO GALLONI

Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese 2019Inviting aromas of sandalwood, blue flower, resin and mocha come to the forefront. The aromas follow through to the savory, rounded palate along with dried cherry, anisette and ground clove. It's polished and accessible, with fine-grained tannins. It closes on the warmth of alcohol. Drink through 2028. KERIN O'KEEFE, Wine Enthusiast
The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is another terrific wine in this range from Piero Busso. Ample and expressive, with terrific depth, the 2019 offers up copious dark red fruit, blood orange and sweet spice tobacco. Firm tannins wrap it all together. The Borghese offers an appealing mix of ripe, racy fruit and mid-weight structure. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous
Busso bottles two cuvées from his 1.2 hectares of vines in the Albesani cru (the other is the Viti Vecchie offered below). On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that here, “…the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. The vines were planted between 30 and 70 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with an ideal southwest exposure. This fermented naturally in tank, then aged in 25-hectolitre cask for 26 months.2019NebbioloItaly457Special Price $147.00 Regular Price $174.00 -
Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco San Stunet 2019
San Stunet is the only Busso vineyard not in Neive, and instead is in the village of Trieso. Busso farms 1.5 hectares of vines, which sit at 400 metres in altitude on a steep gradient (16%). San Stunet soils are mostly yellow marl with a lot of limestone. The Busso vines lie on the southeast face of the ridge which delivers the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this cru. The site is late ripening, usually picked 10 days after the estate’s other vineyards.
The winemaking is identical to the Albesani Vigna Borgese, but this has both more flesh and is punchier, suggesting both more tannins and acidity. Decant it and serve it in a Burgundy glass and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful Nebbiolo loaded with character (dark cherry, honey, leather), depth and structure. It would ideally get 10 to 15 years bottle age, but if not, then lots of air.

Mauro Veglio Barolo Paiagallo 2017
Mauro Veglio's property in Paiagallo is at mid-altitude in what is called Vigna San Sebastiano, bordering Terlo, to which it is closer in style than the opposite side of the MGA. Garnet in colour, it has notes of watermelon, earthy strawberry and lemon leaf. Elegance and freshness prevail over the powerful palate. Nevertheless, it is full bodied, well extracted and with sweet tannins. Citrus notes and liquorice emerge on the finish. ALDO FIORDELLI, www.decanter.com
The 2017 Barolo Paiagallo is the most open and racy of Veglio's 2017. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, dried flowers, orange peel and cinnamon all develop as the 2017 opens in the glass. This is an especially ripe, forward Barolo, but it also has a bit better balance in its tannins. ANTONIO GALLONI
In this wine you glimpse the future of the estate. The lack of smaller oak here reveals a more open profile of red fruits, florals and fruit tannins (not oak tannins) which give life and an entirely different shape to the structural profile. The tannins are saturated and enlivening. I simply love this wine and it occurs to me it's the kind of wine which is the reason you drink Barolo. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Brovia Barolo 2018Brovia's 2018 Barolo is a very good wine for the vintage and within its peer group. It naturally shows the modest structure of the year, but all the elements are nicely balanced. Sweet dried cherry, mint, cedar, tobacco and crushed leaves open nicely. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next handful of years. As always, the straight Barolo is a blend of 70% Brea and 30% a mix of the other sites in the range. It is very nicely done. ANTONIO GALLONI2018NebbioloItaly457$190.00 As low as $171.00
