Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.
Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

Lino Ramble Dot to Dot Arinto 2023SPECIAL VALUE
A Portuguese transplant, arinto is looking like it will settle into McLaren Vale with some ease. This, a case in point. Free run, a little of the light pressings, and wild fermented in steel. Pear and dried apple lashed with brine, savoury-spiked with parsley seed and fennel frond, a water-splashed-concrete mineral note accenting. Alexakis Wines Vidano 2023The grapes are cold-soaked for up to 10 hours to release all their aromas. The free-run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected cultured yeast at low temperatures. Following fermentation, the wine is kept on the fine lees for three months. Very little filtration and fining are employed.
On the nose, elegant peachy and floral aromas with a refreshing grassy note. On the palate, the well-judged alcohol adds to the overall richness of the peach and apricot flavours. Medium-full bodied with a satiny texture and a long fruity finish.

Strawberry, white pepper, a dusty frame of tannin, a sweetness to poached strawberry and raspberry, a little blood orange, with a peppery finish of good length. Puts me in mind of Pelaverga in a way, and there’s that low key energy to the wine that makes it so appealing. A little bit of ripe tomato tang, new leather, and lots of red fruited and spicy interest. Established by Gabriele and Miriam Dalcanele in 2006, La Dama represents the new breed of winemakers in the region. Modern, fresh yet compelling wines coaxed from organically farmed vineyards in the fabled commune of Negrar, home to some of the great names including the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli.Their 10 hectare estate has been certified organic since 2015 and works only with the native varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. Oak influence is kept to a minimum in order to ensure the vineyard speaks for itself in the glass.
Opens with wild forest fruits, a touch of red currant flecked throughout and dusted with sweet, peppery spice. Silky fruit, super vibrant and punchy packed with flavour but delivered in La Dama's typical ethereal style. A little dark cherry, a splash of blackberry, and a touch of wild strawberry fruit too. Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner 2023Gruner Veltliner is a white grape variety native to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic. In Australia Gruner is planted exclusively in cooler regions such as the Tumbarumba, The Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Gruner is often compared to other varieties such Riesling with slightly more volume, texture and more approachable acidity and more subtle, nuanced aromatics.
The 2022 displays aromas of grapefuit, stone fruits, citrus and subtle spice. That lovely green herb flecks the nose and the palate with that line of grapefruity, citrus complemented by fresh white peach and subtle pear. The palate is vibrant and juicy with lovely salivating acidity with some wonderful phenolic play that grips the mouth on the way through. A really impressive Australian version of this varietal with more hopefully to come. We continue to be impressed with the line-up of Nick Spencer gear we try.

Petit Pittacum Mencia 2022We have been enamoured with the mencia based wines of Spaces northwest since first we tried them. Their beautiful lifted nose spiked with mineral accents that flowed onto graceful pallets raked with fine granit like tannins an earthy savouryness at the edges. They are something akin to cru Beaujolias crossed with the finest reds of the loire and we just cant get enough.
Bodegas Pittacum is owned by the Terras Gauda operation and is situated in Argaza in the heart of Bierzo and made from grape sourced from small plots of organically grown 90 year old vines grown in clay soils on steep slopes.
Glace fruits with crème de mure and raspberry coulis flecked with granitic mineral shards. Mid weight styling come from slippery red fruits and a gentle burst of freshness that comes not from acidity but from a deep mineral vein soaked up from the long roots and rocky slopes. Its like a bowl of mixed berry smashed onto rock and is absolutely delightful. If you have not had the wines of the region or mencia this is a belter of an introduction.

Lucchine is the name of the vineyard that provides the grapes. It is located in the plains at the foot of Pedemonte hills in the heart of the historic Valpolicella Classico area. The Tedeschi Family has been linked to winemaking since 1630. However, it was the purchase of several vineyards in 1824 by Nicolo Tedeschi which laid the foundation for the family's current winemaking business. These are classicaly styled but modern takes with a consistency that few producers can boast.

Cesar Marquez Parajes del Bierzo 2022César Márquez Parajes is a coupage of the most prestigious and unique Bierzo plots. Old vines grown as they used to be, without using pesticides or chemicals that can damage the natural balance of the terroir. Each of the plots is worked separately according to their needs and the harvest is carried out manually.
In the winery, 50% of the grapes used to make César Márquez Parajes are destemmed. Then they are pressed in the old-fashioned way, with feet, so that some of them stay whole during fermentation. Fermentation is spontaneous with the grape’s native yeasts. Once the must becomes wine, it is pressed and placed into 225 and 500 litre barrels separately. After 12 months the barrels are emptied and the different wines are combined.

La Dama Vini Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca Besi 2019A wine that originated from where the Valpolicella tadition of drying grapes and the freshness and fragrance of grapes pressed during harvest are combined. This gives birth to a wine of great concentration and elegance, where the freshness suprises when countered by the dark, sweet fruits and long persistent palate.
This skirts such a lovely middle-ground and the lighter, fresher style we see from La Dama is given a little oomph and lick of pizzaz that is hard not to love. Pepper and camphor on the nose with dark roasted ground spice and a Campari like citrus flourish. It belies what comes after which seems so pretty and energetic but matched with some lovey dark, broody fruit that swims around a concentrated but focused core. It comes of subtle and persistent and ultimately so readily appealing. A very cool drop!

Algueira Mencia Ribeira Sacra Risco 2019Merenzao is the same variety as Trousseau (and Bastardo in Portugal) and was probably brought to Ribeira Sacra by the Cistercian monks who set up camp here in the Middle Ages. Algueira’s Merenzao vines have an average age of 80 years and are rooted in a steep slope of gneiss, quartz and slate in the Amandi Gorge. The fruit sees a wild yeast, 100% whole-bunch ferment, is pressed by foot and aged for 12 months in old oak and some local chestnut vessels.
The result is an extraordinary, unique wine with a complex perfume of finely detailed fruit characters that recalls wild cherry steeped with blood orange, rose and a tincture of wild herb. There’s more colour and muscular density from the solar year, yet it remains super lucid and tender and finishes long, leaving behind a lick of elegant tannin and a perfume of sweet red berries and smoky minerals. This is one tasty Bastardo!
