Cantina Santadi, from Sardinia’s southwestern coastal region known as Sulcis, was founded in 1960 as a cooperative of local growers. Under the guidance of Antonello Pilloni, Santadi has become one of Sardinia’s, and Italy’s, finest wineries, with more than 200 growers farming 600 hectares.

The Sulcis peninsula is, geographically, Sardinia’s most ancient area, rich in archaeological sites, and offers an astonishing palette of variations and contrasts, with coastal sand dunes, gentle hills and inlets, narrow strips of flatland and inland mountains, rugged cliffs overhanging the seas interspersed with silky-smooth white beaches, pine trees, junipers and vineyards. In these sandy soils, pre-phylloxera vines continue to survive and thrive.

Made with 10% Nuragus, another local variety, this spends a few months maturation on lees, in stainless steel, to give the wine an extra dimension of flavour and texture. Citrus notes and hints of tropical fruit, the palate is minerally and refreshing.

Exceptional vermentino. Perhaps the best expression from Australia, a land that surely deserve more give the lifestyle. Spiced quince, a squeeze of preserved lemon lathered in more salt than usual and such brio and confidence across the surging finish that I can't help but reach for another glass. SPECIAL BUY - Racy, juicy and succulent with immediate drinking enjoyment in mind. It's hard to ask for more. The Italian grape shines in refreshing lime, grapefruit, yellow apple and spring aromatics. In the mouth, it rolls warmly across the middle palate and then takes off, driven by zippy acidity. In the 2017 Aglianico Le Sepaie I’m finding a savory display, leading off with a whiff of animal musk and smoky minerals, as notes of black cherry, spice, violet florals, and dark earth tones come forward. On the palate, soft textures give way to fresh red fruits, offset by zesty acids and spice, as a coating of minerals drench the senses. The finish is long yet energetic, as acids linger, along with spicy red berries and a hint of young tannin. The 2017 Le Sepaie has energy to burn and drinks beautifully today, yet it should also excel over the next five or more years in the cellar. It offers tremendous value. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous Media

Little Frances was established in 2012 by Aussie ex-pat Erin Frances Pooley, who set out to make the wines she loves to drink from Californian grapes. Enamoured with the nuance and intrigue of aged white wine (and missing Hunter Valley Semillon from home), Erin started Little Frances in 2012 with just 200 cases of Semillon from a high altitude vineyard in Northern California, farmed by the 3rd generation growers.

We knew of Erin with her work with one of our producers, Hobo Wine Co. Owner Kenny is a friend and mentor and we have been super excited to try her wines and needless to say we were not disappointed.

This blend is vermentino dominant with some aromatic components and textural support from pinot Gris & friulano all from the Apline Valleys, a region which Erin loves for the diversity of varietal selection and what that brings to the table. The trio get fermented in barrels and aged on their lees for a while.
A beautiful co
mbination of zingy freshness, weight and texture. Erin has captured the pristine fruits in peek ripeness then judiciously and cleverly add nuance as well as light and shade to the final wines through throughtful winemaking.

High, cool-climate vermentino that explores the grape's floral and savoury side. Honeysuckle, citrus blossom, radish, lemon and grapefruit bring a mix of bright, citrusy energy and gentle savouriness to the glass. Super crunchy acidity will see it make plenty of friends in the warmer months. JENI PORT, The Wine Front

The nose is quite yeasty, courtesy of its extreme youth, presumably. The palate though is right on track, with grapefruit and citrus notes woven through with spice, stones, quartz and more of the like. It has both texture and cut, the latter aided by brine-like notes. I’d want the nose on this to settle down before hooking in, but the intensity and character of the palate is excellent. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

100% Aglianico from clay and limestone soil in the Taurasi and Paternopoli production zones of southern Italy. The wine is aged in barriques and tonneaux for 12 months.

A complex nose of great depth, intensity and persistent flavours. There are hints of violet, cherry and wild strawberry. The palate shows great structure with enveloping warmth and smooth intense aromas of red fruit with delicate spicy notes.

Honey, aniseed, dried herbs, almond, pink grapefruit and green pear. It’s juicy, but kind of saline, tight and flecked with a fennel and herb perfume, a bit of chalky texture with some grip and energy on a finish of good length and some lemon rind. I like this. Petilia's story is woven into the very fabric of Greco di Tufo and this wine encapsulate brilliantly what these wines can be when this variety and place come together under the watchful eye of a producer of this calibre. Drink this with abandon, enjoy it with a wide range of fare, it's freshness and structure give it a wide zone to play in.

Very cool wine. Almond oil and citrus pith on the nose slowly open to reveal orange blossom, green mandarin and saline notes. Some lovely phenolic grip add texture webbing the pristine fruits on the palate together nicely. It starts tangy and fresh with an array of citrus interspersed with rocky notes and green apple fruit. Super refreshing with a long palate that sizzles along to a long supple close.

Dry, fresh and textural. Banana peel, pinapple and lime splice. Seaspray, ginger and walnuts.

Destemmed, wild fermented, left 30 days on skins, pressed to chestnut botte. The classic southern Italian red grape is incredibly well suited to the climate and soils of Heathcote. Each vintage re-affirms that. A complex, fleshy expression of the grape is wrapped in black cherry, white pepper, allspice, dark chocolate, licorice and a gentle savouriness. A lovely depth of flavour with hints of almond nuttiness is just developing on the palate. It's going to age into a beauty. JENI PORT, James Halliday

Located in the Ligurian Riviera at Albenga between the hills and the Mediterranean sea, Cascina Feipu was founded in 1960’s when Agostino Parodi began converting his father’s (Filippo – Feipu in the local dialect) orchards to grape growing.

Son-in-law Mirco Mastroianni joined the cantina in 1997 and under his direction, the cellars were rebuilt and production increased. Mirco is proud to be in an area where wineries are still family-run with great respect for traditional vines and wines.

Pigato might be genetically the same as Vermentino but don't say that around here to loud! Although both vines look the same and share similar herbal and salty notes, the pigato has a beautiful floral lilt and airy nose that is so inviting. An amalgam of green  tree fruits, stone fruit and a touch of yellow plum zip along an electric palate. We are a bit enamoured by this wine and can't recommend it enough.

The 2019 Aglianico del Vulture SCEG needs a good decant or coaxing in the glass to blow off some smoky youthful reduction. Beneath awaits a wild mix of peppery herbs, blackberries, dried citrus and hints of animal musk. It’s soft and enveloping, yet quickly takes on a zesty and energetic flair, with tart wild berries and cooling mineral tones motivated by a bolt of nervous acidity. The 2019 finishes with tension and lightly-structured, leaving the palate drenched in primary concentration, as tart black currants are pleasantly offset by a hint of sweet lavender. This is only the second vintage for the SCEG, and it really shows the potential of the fruit sources that Elena Fucci is using. These sources are made up of farmers who work alongside the Fucci family for decades and tend to some of the oldest parcels in the region. This is really well done. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous

A new wine for Elena, Sceg, pronounced sheg in Italian, is the name for pomegranate in Arbëreshë, an old dialect spoken by Albanians who emigrated to southern Italy centuries ago. These old vines, 70+ years, are owned by friends of her grandfather, Generoso, and were at risk of going untended. Aged in tonneaux for twelve months.

The 2022 Greco di Tufo Terra d'Uva opens in the glass with a bouquet that blends fresh mint with kiwi and candied lime. It's soft and round with cooling acidity and crisp orchard fruits that find a lovely contrast through an air of sweet inner florals. This finishes dry yet fresh, leaving a mineral tinge and a pleasantly bitter sensation that calls the taster back to the glass. The 420 is a special plot that sits in the highly regarded Chianche sub-zone. The vines are on the round of a hill, so have multiple expositions and sit at 650 metres above the local woodlands that leave it exposed to the warm weather. PWS

Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. This is a distinctive wine built to be consumed with food to see it at its best. Idiosyncratic and intriguing in the best way. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Showing Greco di Tufo’s serious, sophisticated side, this has discreet aromas suggesting stone fruit, lychee and Spanish broom. Linear and polished, the elegant palate offers white peach, pear and Myer lemon before finishing on hints of white almond and acacia honey. An enticing nose of prune, walnut, eucalyptus and something like onion seed. Medium-to full-bodied with a layered texture of fruit and mild, spicy flavors that coat the still lightly firm but melting tannins, creating a very long, flavorful finish, where all the elements find common ground. The 2021 Terra D'Eclano is remarkably expressive, with a vivid blend of wild strawberries, violets, lavender and hints of wet stone. It sweeps across the palate, wildly fresh and lifted with crisp wild berry fruits and perfumed inner florals. Tactile mineral tones form toward the close. The 2021 finishes long and staining yet energetic, with a gentle tug of fine tannins and a nuance of sour citrus. Wow. ERIC GUIDO

The dark and seductive bouquet opens with blackberry jam, blueberries and peppery floral tones, which are found on the palate together with salty notes and a fine tannin. Its enormously silky texture and well-dosed concentration of black fruits are accompanied by a remarkable freshness that builds and builds until the endlessly long final. This lively and at the same time incredibly elegant red wine delights on the finish with minty herbs and flowers that could not be more seductive. It's a battle royal of North vs South for our second premium pack where the only winner is going to be you! From the warm southern coast to the rolling hills of the verdant north, Italy's multitude of breathtaking terroir and incredible indigenous varieties is one to impress.

This is an exciting little pack, something a little different with some cracking little wines brand new to the country, some Prince Wine Store classics and a couple of wines, we know, you will be happily and wonderfully surprised by.

From the north we start with one of the best new wines we have seen in a while. The Battiselle le Battiselle Soave is such a beautiful Soave. This is the second vintage of this to hit our shores and we missed the tiny allocation last time but certainly won't this time. You are in for a treat as we think this is one of best Soave's, if not, best white wine from Italy in some time.

Next up is the La Dama Vini Superiore. A nuanced and pretty style Valpolicella from a modern and thoughtful producer. Also relatively new to the country this see's the skins of the Amarone ferment added to the Valpolicella to add an extra depth and richness that you do not normally see from the Classico versions. 

Last is the king of red wine in Italy and the Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera. Both the vineyard and the vintage favour this release with so much immediate appeal straight our of the gate. Veglio is turning back the use of oak and we are reaping the benefits for the change in tack. All the generosity is still there of the house style but with even more clarity and verve.

From the south we start with the Petila Greco di Tufo. This is another family estate that has only relatively recently started to bottle under their own label. This come from an elevated plot of old vines and see's some extended ageing and subtle barrel work. The zingy greco grape keeps it liveliness while the extra time in bottle has built and layered the wine.

We would be hard pressed not to include an Etna Rosso in the pack and we are so lucky that our choices here in Aus are so exceptional.  Giuseppe Tornatore spent much of the early 2000s sourcing some of the regions best plots which has proved to be an insightful move with, now some of the most highly sought after vineyards in his holding and what seems like an unstoppable thirst for his wines.

The last wine of the list is a real treat and was such a surprise for us in a recent tasting. This hails from foothills of Mt Vesuvias and in fact the vineyards overlook the famous ruins of Pompei. Unsurprisingly the wine reflects in origins and is an intriguing blend of piedirosso and aglianico that greets you with its smokey and charred fruit overlayed with dried and broody fruits.

The soil, created by ashes and pumices, is volcanic, without limestone, well drained, deep and with rough texture. These conditions allow an elevated availability of oxygen for the roots. The vineyard, situated at 440 metres of altitude with a slope of 15%, has a density of 5.000 plants per hectar and is cultivated with a cordon spur training system. Vigna Grande Cerzito is characterized by refined flavours of cherry, plum and chocolate and by a full and delicate structure. Great longevity, it becomes even more delicate and elegant with the passing of the years complementing with fresh notes of mint, eucalyptus and incense. LUIGI MOIO, quintodecimo

Darkly floral and intense, the 2019 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Grande Cerzito slowly awakens in the glass with a display of crushed blackberries, incense and exotic spice, complicated by hints of flowery undergrowth. This is like pure silk on the palate, polished and cool-toned in feel, with a balsamic tinge to its ripe red and black fruits. Its tannins come forward through the finish, long and staining, leaving an echo of licorice and spice to linger on and on. ERIC GUIDO

…ripe dark fruits complemented by spiced oranges, sage and mint with a hint of green olive. On the palate, velvety textures are contrasted by cooling acids, while polished black fruits wash over the senses, leaving a mix of salty minerals and fine tannins with a hint of violet flowers. The finish is long, packed with masses of ripe blackberries, plums and sweet herbal tones, but also perfectly structured and, for all its youthfulness, very balanced and harmonious. Seductive class and aromatic intensity is complemented by savory tannins and well expressed in a profound and refined style.
