Lemon and ginger, lemongrass, almond, a little oyster shell salinity. It’s a tight and frisky wine, lots of zip and energy, maybe a little too much sour green apple and bony texture, some chamomile mouth-perfume, lemon peel, lime and licking a 9V battery zip with a dash of Angostura bitters on a finish of good length. One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2021The reason the POCW folks went to this vineyard was for the syrah, this being the first of the releases solely from this site, from a singular year.
Very floral in the perfume, violets and lavender, whiffs of eucalyptus and loads of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, in a fog of scent too. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. Kenzie Waiohinganga Chardonnay 2022Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.
Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.
Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Chardonnay 2022I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Avani Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021
From Gippsland and, by the label, Issan Vineyard, a site winemaker Shashi Singh is into for its high density planting and organic farming. Avani is one of those very important Victorian wineries, from where I sit, making beautiful wines (by beautiful people). Always a treat to revisit. Avani is based in Mornington Peninsula, of course.
This is a cool and restrained pinot noir, lithe and shapely, fine boned, a web of lacy, silty tannin lends structure and the wine sits comfortable in its dark cherry, black olive, faintly game meat-meets-rosemary savouriness with a little sweet. smoky earth character in the mix for good measure. Understated and elegant but with plenty going on. A little spread in texture gives the wine a moreish feel. It feels fancy too, in that distinct way that great wines of the world hold themselves. Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2021This is a beautiful release of Shaw + Smith Shiraz. It’s even-handed and well tempered but then it’s all joy from there. A forest of berries, a walk through flowers, peppers flung through and rubs of woodsy spice; the combination of fruitiness, savouriness, seriousness and fun is a highway to pleasure, built on wine. For all that the tannin is another dimension in itself; fine, lacy, assertive and savoury at once, complete with its own twiggy spice notes. It’s drinking beautifully and it will continue to do so.
