Patrick Sullivan Woori Yallock Chardonnay 2024Medium-full yellow colour with a smoky struck-flint aroma overlying lemon/citrus fruit, a touch of oak spice, all in balance. The palate is superfine and seamless, elegant and long, with touches of oak and reductive smokiness meeting citrus and stone-fruits, the back-palate swelling into a big finale. Nectarine, cumquat jelly and rosewater, ginger and cinnamon, hazelnut, chamomile and mint, and while I’ve likely written some outlandish stuff here, in essence, it pretty much just smells and tastes like a very good Chardonnay. It has plenty of flavour, though it’s not heavy, hazelnut and salted pistachio, a subtle cultured butter character, a chalky and stony thing to texture, acidity is cool and fine, green mango and ripe lemon closes out a finish of excellent length. Slowly building a floral perfume in the flavour and holding that floral perfume the longest in the finish. Also chalky finishing but seemingly with even finer texture. The palate is broad and ample without any heaviness and the depth of flavour and length are impressive indeed. This is a wine "toute en finesse" as they say, but also with power and palate presence. A step up in quality and intensity, but also a bity more tightly wound than the Village wine. Also, more awash with minerality, bordering on estuarine (a character I love with these wines), and that really brings the Chabliness to the fore. Along with a crisp, but ripe, array of fruit a little grip and a crunch of acidity, this is pretty textbook Fourchaume from Chantemerle and I think will expand well with a few years in the cellar, but that ample fruit and weight provides a tonne of upfront pleasure in the early days.
