Gueguen Chablis 2020 375mlCeline Gueguen Brocard and Frederic Gueguen are a refreshing new voice amongst the mineral soils of Chablis. Though their experience runs deep. Celine is the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, the respected Chablis estate where she worked with her husband Frederic for over a decade.
Winegrowing runs in Celine's blood. Plots from her great grandmother established in 1882 have been passed down the line to her. Her mother, also a wine grower instilled a strong work ethic in her daughter. To say wine ran in the family is an understatement.
That classic stoney-Chablis-esq vibe here. Why do we mentione that because a warming climates and changing syle doesn't always present but here it does. Nice balance with the fresh white tree fruits cut by a saline line of acicidity and sprinkled with a little white pepper, quartzy thing going on. Nice little push of fruit out the back with loveley virbancy and purity offset with a little leesy funk.

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2023"It's the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I'll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. There would be a lot of wineries who would love to have this as their top chardonnay. But of course, Leeuwin has that little matter of Art Series above it. This really is one of the best and most complete of this line. Seems to have struck a nice balance between the early more opulent styles and some of the later leaner styles. The vintage has helped but the fruit is so pretty with typical cashew, light grapefruit and a little lemon character supported by such exquisitely applied oak. Very good.

95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino. Temperature controlled (maximum 26° C) cofermentation in open tanks with selected indigenous yeasts takes place over 20 days. Aged for 12 months, primarily in cement vats with a small proportion in old oak casks. I think you could say that this wine really displays the freshness and brightness of the estate’s northerly site while offering genuine Classico depth an character. Cherry, blueberry and raspberry fruit is prominent on the bouquet, with a touch of floral perfume in the background. Very lively on the palate, the redfruited flavours are well balanced with the silky but persistent and lingering tannin astringency. Very good drinking now, but a little more bottle age will definitely add some extra depth and dimension. Currently one of my favourites in the portfolio

Fontalpino Chianti Colli Senesi 2020100% Sangiovese coming from the Colli Senesi subzone that hugs the southern section of Chianti Classico, as opposed to the two other Colli Senesi subzones: one to the north of Montalcino, and the other to the north of Montepulciano. Both Gioia and Filippo feel this northern section of the Colli Senesi DOCG far outshines the two southern sections as far as depth and intensity of flavour and structure are concerned. This wine is medium to dark in colour, with a fresh bouquet of spicy plums and violets. Honeycrisp apple skin, lemon zest and green plum. Winter melon and starfruit. Plumes of talc powder, pomice and honeysuckle. Plenty of white delicate florals and a blush of nectarine. Intoxicating acidity and a kefir creaminess on the finish. A spray of saline and oak appears in its round shapes rather than toasty notes. Alive with energy and creeping unsuspecting power. A step up in quality and intensity, but also a bity more tightly wound than the Village wine. Also, more awash with minerality, bordering on estuarine (a character I love with these wines), and that really brings the Chabliness to the fore. Well, this is a wild one for sure. It’s kind of sweaty and clove spiced, oyster shell, white mushroom, lime and cape gooseberry. It’s saline and savoury, powdery and dusty in texture, some cashew cream in the mix, with a curry leaf finish of good length. It’s kind of dirty, and yet, I find it strangely compelling. Makes you smile this wine. There's a generosity of aromatic that leads you through baked pastry, fresh cut stonefruits and then an invogorating punch of crushed stone minerality puffs into view. It's kind of like a Champagne letting it's hair down on the palate as well, genrosity of well-defined fruit is edged with minerality and oyster shell while the fine bead cinches and tucks in the effusive edges. Its got enough in it for the serious-minded fizz drinker but is also playful and generous enough to keep you pulling it out of the fridge for pretth much any pcassion. MICHAEL MCNAMARAThis thing hits it out of the park in terms of delivering quality and value. It doesn’t hold back with packing in the flavour either. The fruit is present and accounted for, with a nice lick of minerality and some back end punch, but what is really striking is the yeasty, brioche, burnt toast mealy characters that immediately greet you as you take your first sniff. It has all the bells and whistles. As a Champagne nerd I love to see that in the wine, as distinctly different to my fetish for Grower Bubbles, give me some of that expressively yeasty goodness. Dicey Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021James is the grower, Matt the caretaker and they are the Dicey brothers. They are also neighbours with all the fruit for Dicey is sourced from the family's vineyards in the Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago. All sustainable and all about showing place.
Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.

Dormilona Clayface Chardonnay 2023No oak at all as Clayface is an amphora wine; the fruit is basket pressed to a single Italian amphora. This started out shy on the aromatic front, even if the palate came out textural and seductive. It’s worth decanting so that all the aromas and flavours are revealed: stone fruit, dabs of Meyer lemon and preserved lemon, too. The palate is invigorating, with ginger spice, galangal, and there’s a tanginess offset by a light layer of butter/cream, but oh-so light. It’s complex, energising and different. Located in the commune of Radda, Piero and his sister, Benedetta, took over the estate from their father in the mid 1980’s and have extensively renovated the vineyards and, more recently, the old property at Bugialla in to a stunning agriturismo. The wines are typically full and rich yet retain beautiful elegance and perfumed fruit. They taste like Chianti should and they are always good, even in lesser years.

The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti with floral notes, spice and ripe red cherry and berry fruit, the structured palate rounded by sweet persistent tannin.

Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey.
