Dark cherry and blue fruits, plenty of spice, black olive and grilled meat. It’s medium-bodied, spicy and perfumed, meaty too, with a surprisingly intense burst of ‘minerally’ acidity through its core. In the crucial early days of vinification, Rosalind foot stomps the ferments three times a day to ensure each berry is quickly but gently popped, maximising the juice’s exposure to skins and stalks. Havilah Shiraz 2021The Havilah Shiraz is a dream finally realised for Ricky Evans.
He'd had his eye on some Shiraz planted on the western side of the Tamar Valley for quite some time, and a warm vintage meant all of the fruit ripened neatly - making it perfect to go into this cuvee.
Filled with all the hallmarks of cool climate Shiraz like white pepper, blue fruits and a nice crunch of acidity, this is yet another killer wine to add to Ricky's stable.

Dormilona Clayface Chardonnay 2023No oak at all as Clayface is an amphora wine; the fruit is basket pressed to a single Italian amphora. This started out shy on the aromatic front, even if the palate came out textural and seductive. It’s worth decanting so that all the aromas and flavours are revealed: stone fruit, dabs of Meyer lemon and preserved lemon, too. The palate is invigorating, with ginger spice, galangal, and there’s a tanginess offset by a light layer of butter/cream, but oh-so light. It’s complex, energising and different. Matured in clay amphora from gooder bits of good vineyard in Margaret River.This has some mojo. Succulent texture with a rub of granitic chew, elements of terracotta and briny savouriness amongst peach, nectarine and cumquat sweet-sour tang. Joshua Cooper Chardonnay 2024From the Dash Farm's vineyard which is also a single vineyard wine, designate, but here done in a slightly different style.
Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey. Character filled, compelling drinking, a chardonnay not afraid of flavour but happy resting in a space that feels cooler and brighter too. Apple, cashew, almond, pulpy grapefruit, cumquat, cinnamon. Hits the ripe stone fruit and slightly exotic register but with air it tightens up significantly and turns on the southern charm. Fleshy, nice volume and intensity, no lack of freshness but this nails the succulent and juicy mark, offering up all the bits you want from a great Chard that drinks like it was made for the table. Upfront and loaded up with pleasure on all fronts. Southern Chard made by a master from Burg and it shows. Well played. This is should be on your highlight reel for summer. Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!
It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvedre 2021Since being planted in 2005, Mourvèdre has evolved with maturing vines to the point it is now ready to go under the Isolation Ridge label in its own right. It’s a variety that I really do like, especially from Frankland River where some very smart examples are starting to emerge. This is certainly one of those. Lemon and ginger, lemongrass, almond, a little oyster shell salinity. It’s a tight and frisky wine, lots of zip and energy, maybe a little too much sour green apple and bony texture, some chamomile mouth-perfume, lemon peel, lime and licking a 9V battery zip with a dash of Angostura bitters on a finish of good length. Based on the nose, this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its quinine, petrol, oyster shell, lemongrass and algae scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. The rich, sleek and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity as well as an abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine supporting the clean, dry and youthfully austere finale where a touch of rusticity eventually appears. Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 2021The reason the POCW folks went to this vineyard was for the syrah, this being the first of the releases solely from this site, from a singular year.
Very floral in the perfume, violets and lavender, whiffs of eucalyptus and loads of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, in a fog of scent too. Lots of concentration to taste but with a glossy wash of acidity under the tart red cherry, game meat, dried herbs and white pepper characters. Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Chardonnay 2022I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. The palate sings with fruit intensity and tightly strung Gingin acid, both of which bode well for time in the cellar. A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. Satsuma plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruit tones are joined by hints of fine spice, sage, violets, softly spoken vanillin oak and earth. The fruit darkens on the palate, tensing before fanning out on the finish with a cascade of dusty, granitic tannin and plenty of Eden Valley drive. Lovely. Kenzie Waiohinganga Chardonnay 2022Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.
Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.
Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

Well this is the Gin Gin clone from Karridale, gets the whole malo thing, and 40% new oak. Heavy bottles still, unlike Leeuwin and Cullen, who are leading the way in this respect.Powerful wine, and glossy, and buttery, cashew nut richness, toast. ginger and clove, with some struck match, pear and grapefruit. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Domaine des Carlines La Vouivre Chardonnay/Savagnin 2021Coming off a terrible low yielding 2021 harvest resulting in the loss of 80% of their crop!! The up side to this is all their top sites go into this one "lower tier" wine. A wine that really reflects the unique and exceptional Jura terroir; driven by rocks and minerals and is loaded with flavour and interest. Fennel seeds and just ripe apricots on wet stone. Avani Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021
From Gippsland and, by the label, Issan Vineyard, a site winemaker Shashi Singh is into for its high density planting and organic farming. Avani is one of those very important Victorian wineries, from where I sit, making beautiful wines (by beautiful people). Always a treat to revisit. Avani is based in Mornington Peninsula, of course.
This is a cool and restrained pinot noir, lithe and shapely, fine boned, a web of lacy, silty tannin lends structure and the wine sits comfortable in its dark cherry, black olive, faintly game meat-meets-rosemary savouriness with a little sweet. smoky earth character in the mix for good measure. Understated and elegant but with plenty going on. A little spread in texture gives the wine a moreish feel. It feels fancy too, in that distinct way that great wines of the world hold themselves.
