Mulline Sutherlands Creek Pinot Noir 2023SPECIAL BUY - A single-vineyard wine from the Strathmore Vineyard, planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late 1990s; 20% whole bunches. Matured in 30% new puncheons and barriques. A deepish crimson ruby. More darkly fruited and concentrated than last year's version. Dark cherries, damson plums, peony and spice on the bouquet. Saturates the palate, which is concentrated, structured, fleshy and very long. It's so good now but will get even better over the next six to eight years and probably longer. Last year’s release was made with MV6 and Abel clone pinot noir, on vines planted in 1998 at Sutherlands Creek in the Moorabool Valley. I assume this release is the same.It presents a bed of fruit-filled flavour, all macerated and strewn with herbs, and while it sings and impresses through the mainstay of the palate, it’s the finish that really moves the bar higher. This wine pushes flavour well beyond the point where it had every reason to stop. The winemaker probably won’t like me saying this, but it’s a Pinot Noir that feels very Australian, in a positive way. It’s varietal, but it feels “very MV6”. Its flavours nestle into the palate, rather than being over-eager to lift off and out. It has that feel of being settled, like a cat after it’s finished kneading your lap. This is a highly unusual wine, Brachetto itself isn't well known and most are made in to lightly frizzante sweet wines. Like Moscato d'Asti. There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. I pretty much never drink any samples, because it’s not a good habit to get into, though maybe a few swallows might make a summer while I’m actually tasting, but hey, that’s what I call the FCE (Full Consumer Experience). Anyway, I had a few glasses of this last night while watching the documentary about Ennio Morricone – “Ennio” – which is currently streaming on Stan. Very good too, and this, in a way, while not Italian, seemed a suitable style of wine for that show. I cooked my children some duck breast for tea, with jasmine rice, steamed greens and plum sauce, but I didn’t eat any of that, though this wine would have been most excellent with it. I had a piece of bread with some Laughing Cow cheese on it. Economies must be made.Fine, kind of stony, perfumed, cherry and red fruit, gentle spiced oak, something a little earthy/autumnal too. It’s light to medium-bodied, pleasantly sappy, with a good crunch to acidity, really pleasing pumice stone tannin, and a offers a juicy/savoury finish of excellent length, with a little blood orange bite. Gentle Folk Scary Gully Pinot Noir 2023Peppery, herbal, lifted and grippy. A good combo of things when it strolls through a sluice of tart cherry juice and cranberry tang. Tightly coiled too, a vigorous and streamlined pinot noir, albeit it has expressive nature, a distinct personality and flair. Refreshing all up too. The broodier and deeper of the three single-site pinots this release. Scary Gully is the oldest site with the most elevation. The essence of a long ripening season is cast here with black cherry and plum, compact and dense. There's a cosy up-in-a-log cabin appeal to it, all crunchy and wild, confident in its expression, with ample spice and twiggy herbs, thyme and bay. It feels unperturbed and complete. Dirty Three Dirt 3 Pinot Noir 2023Fruit off the D’Angelo vineyard at Officer, fermented with 50% whole-bunches, so expect it to be perfumed with joss sticks, violets, roses, a little sappy/twiggy and dusty, too, but in a good way. There’s some volume, a bit more oomph with ripe, fleshy and decisive tannins, the fuller-bodied palate flush with dark cherries, roasted tomatoes, amaro and energising, lively acidity. In the heart of Gippsland Marcus Satchell and his wife Lisa Sartori craft some of Gippsland best wines with a focus on single site pinot noir. Marcus was a bit of a trailblazer for the region bring the wines of the region into the consciousness of the local Vic wine scene with there open and generous styling and subtle complexity. As a native to the region he was perfectly placed for the inside-line when it came to sourcing the regions best fruit for his wines.
He spent his formative years in the Yarra Valley and overseas forming friendships and working with some of the best in the business. Mentors and friends that he holds dear to his heart drive his ongoing pursuit of making better and better wine. If he's not off consulting, wine judging, pruning vines or talking passionately about his craft, you might find him out in the surf or playing music around town but don't be fooled, the man knows is way around the winery better than most.

Onannon Main Ridge Tudibaring Pinot Noir 2022So pretty and appealing thanks to its up-front red cherries and spice flavours. At first quite fruit-sweet, then other elements come into play: tangy, tart, pomegranate-like acidity, a touch of menthol. The oak is oh-so-subtle, adding some background nuances to the lighter-framed palate with lacy tannins. This is lovely. Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2022The 2022 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is supple and spicy, with pink peppercorn, cherry blossom, red apple skins, a hint of blond tobacco and white pepper. Francois Carillon Bourgogne Rouge 2021While there is no reviews for this rouge, he doesn't make much, we continue to buy it every year as the quality has been consistently excellent. So much so that it seems to be popping up in more and more staff orders, always a good sign. The red also has garnered a bit of a following here amongst some customers. For the price I think it's a bit of a steal, many Bourg Rouge are now topping the $100 mark. He doesn't make us take it, we buy it because we think it's excellent. I suggest trying some yourself. Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir 2021The most structured offering in the Quealy stable – the tannins are textural with seemingly more fruit weight. It still has the vivacity of the ’21 vintage, yet incorporates hints of sweet and tart rhubarb, dark cherries, mocha and dried herbs plus cedar oak flavour. The palate doesn’t quite flesh out, even if it is medium bodied, as the acidity is keeping everything reined in, bar the slightly bitter, charred radicchio character on the finish, which adds to the mouthfeel and pleasure of drinking.

Strong release. Both woodsy spice and oak notes aplenty but with the fruit to support it. Back cherries, strawberries, toast and coffee grounds, with cedar and dried herb notes over the top. Both inherently complex and inherently bold, even at 12.6% alc. Savoury to the point of bitter, but not. Firm-ish. It’s not for drinking now; it’s built to be matured.
