Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2023Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer with particular emphasis on Vernaccia which, it has to be said, has been a revelation in the years since we first started seeing them in Australia.
Bright and somewhat crunchy with a direct line of fresh apple like acidity. Plenty to enjoy here with all the usual elements you would want from Vernaccia of this quality, apple fruit, lemon oil and white flowers along with just enough texture to provide a little tactile interest. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer and packaged it up with some of the besta value coming out of the region.
Unbelievable value again this year. A bit of white pepper and sour cherry fruit that opens into a slight darker fruit profile in the glass. Same goes on the palate with a little more dark plumb and morello cherry here than in other years. Plushly fruited but all held together with nice savoury tannins and a splash of leathery spice.

Weingut Dorli Muhr Samt & Seide Blaufrankisch 2021The 2021 Blaufränkisch Prellenkirchen Samt & Seide was made from 10-35-year-old vines from around 15 parcels along the mid-slope of the Spitzerberg. Beautiful, dark fruit shimmers with red berry and pomegranate juiciness, promising freshness and verve. The palate is its fine-boned self, agile, bright and articulate. It's alive with a pepperiness and structured tannins that crunch like starched silk. It is absolutely approachable, savory, and red-fruited, but it is also a candidate for lying down.
