The Brajkovichs remain firmly on top when it comes to New Zealand Chardonnay, finding another gear over the last decade as the competition around them heats up. They are undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest white wine producer and have set a blistering pace for the variety over the last four decades.

Yes, this small family winery that's sandwiched between a winding river and a busy highway is  a world beater. Collectors from the across the world are eager to snap up their wares upon release. Pulling off the highway just beyond the outskirts of Auckland and stepping through the lemon-yellow archway that leads into the tasting room it all seems a bit impossible. Maybe better suited to a few souvenirs, tea and scones perhaps? Then you taste the wines.

No oak at all as Clayface is an amphora wine; the fruit is basket pressed to a single Italian amphora. This started out shy on the aromatic front, even if the palate came out textural and seductive. It’s worth decanting so that all the aromas and flavours are revealed: stone fruit, dabs of Meyer lemon and preserved lemon, too. The palate is invigorating, with ginger spice, galangal, and there’s a tanginess offset by a light layer of butter/cream, but oh-so light. It’s complex, energising and different. Matured in clay amphora from gooder bits of good vineyard in Margaret River.

This has some mojo. Succulent texture with a rub of granitic chew, elements of terracotta and briny savouriness amongst peach, nectarine and cumquat sweet-sour tang. Exotic in a way, but pleasingly so, very even and well balanced in flavours, evocatively perfumed and generally, wildly drinkable. Lots of charm and x-factor here. Keen. From the Dash Farm's vineyard which is also a single vineyard wine, designate, but here done in a slightly different style.

Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey. Character filled, compelling drinking, a chardonnay not afraid of flavour but happy resting in a space that feels cooler and brighter too. Apple, cashew, almond, pulpy grapefruit, cumquat, cinnamon. Golden Delicious apple and sweet Elberta peach aromas encircle the head, with a touch of thyme and spicy cinnamon basil. This is a crisp, lighter-bodied Chardonnay that delivers white peach, lime and saline flavors on a laser beam of acidity. It will be difficult to resist a second glass. Best Buy. Spiced nectarines, honeycomb and saline notes allude to its underlying ripeness. On the palate, it's ripe yet constrained by a savoury scaffolding of spicy oak. Earthy notes of wet pebbles and seapsray add to the wine's texture and flavour profile. The finish is pulled together by a lovely line of fine and chewy phenolics, adding to the tension and energy. Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!

It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. 60/25/10/5% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre/cinsault. The grenache spends 16 months in 1600L seasoned foudre, the rest matured in barriques (15% new for the shiraz). A wine that shows both the potential of these varieties and this blend at Mount Mary. Perfumed and spicy with red and black fruits and a little Mediterranean garrigue. Brightly fruited and with tannins that are juicy and balanced, this medium-bodied wine is already a treat to drink. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

This is from a vineyard planted in 1990, and it seems all the wines from 2024 are made the same way. 30% new oak. Full malo. And that’s a nice thing to do.

Lemon and ginger, lemongrass, almond, a little oyster shell salinity. It’s a tight and frisky wine, lots of zip and energy, maybe a little too much sour green apple and bony texture, some chamomile mouth-perfume, lemon peel, lime and licking a 9V battery zip with a dash of Angostura bitters on a finish of good length. Grown by Lucy and Alysha in Maffra, Central Gippsland. A single block Chardonnay made from 40 year old vines grown on alluvial soils. Whole bunch pressed and 100% barrel fermented in aged French oak. From the Full Moon Vineyard in Gladysdale. Wild ferment and 100% mlf. There's only one wine from winemakers and friends Steve Flamsteed and Dave Mackintosh, and it's always a good 'un. A bright green gold. There's aromas of ripe stone fruits together with some savoury and complex briny notes. On the palate, this has lots of flavour and punch, finishing long with a refreshing touch of grip. Delicious now and over the next 4–6 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.

A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Light straw-yellow; reserved aromas of straw/hay and tealeaf, nougat later, and pleasant more fruit-driven flavour, attractive, tight and refreshingly dry. Slightly biscuity oak. Reserved, possibly still a bit in its shell and needing more time, but has the makings of a very smart chardonnay. HUON HOOKE, therealreview.com

Yields were way down in '22; thankfully, the wines are generally very good to excellent, this in the latter camp. Pristine flavours comprising white peach and lemon, lightly spiced and offset by fluffy, creamy lees. The palate is superfine, the oak superbly integrated and the finish absurdly long and fabulous. Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.

Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.

Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. The palate sings with fruit intensity and tightly strung Gingin acid, both of which bode well for time in the cellar. A delicious Chinese greens crunch and a frame of fine, voluminous fruit carefully wrapped in top-notch oak. (95) DECANTER

A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. The palate has a slightly crystalline minerality with a lingering finish. Has a distinctive sea spray talky character which is most appealing. (95) RAY JORDAN

This is an elegant chardonnay with layers of roasted almonds, white sesame, apricots, pie crust and peach pits. Full-bodied, nutty and delicious, with a fresh minerality and a creamy and seamless finish. Vegan. JAMES SUCKLING

A touch of funk here, some smoky sulfides and toasty barrel derived character allied with nougat honey and toasted nuts. A wine of refinement and restraint as well as good depth of flavour, the refreshing acidity towing the flavour long through an extended finish. (Karridale fruit, Gingin clone; underwent malolactic). Well this is the Gin Gin clone from Karridale, gets the whole malo thing, and 40% new oak. Heavy bottles still, unlike Leeuwin and Cullen, who are leading the way in this respect.

Powerful wine, and glossy, and buttery, cashew nut richness, toast. ginger and clove, with some struck match, pear and grapefruit. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Brisat is a blend of 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeu from 15- to 35-year-old vines around Capçanes, grown at between 300 and 350 metres on sandy clay soils locally known as panal. The fruit is harvested earlier than typical for the area—when flavours are ripe and acidity is still vibrant.

Brisat in Catalan refers to wine fermented on skins. Half the grapes were direct-pressed, and the other half macerated in their juice for five to seven days. If you tasted earlier releases of Brisat, we should note that these days Huber and Peceric are searching for more finesse and expression of place in this wine, and thus have toned back the ‘skinsyness’. The must fermented with indigenous yeasts before the wine rested on lees for six months in tank. It was bottled unfiltered.

Prizing finesse over concentration, Serbian-born vigneron Tatjana Peceric has a beautiful touch with Montsant’s high-grown Garnacha and Cariñena. Except for the skin-contact white Brisat, the wines are fermented as whole bunches in concrete, amphorae and stainless steel (no oak is used), and extraction is as gentle as possible. In the cellar, Peceric works with the infusion model—a buzzy term for sure, yet we should not forget that this kind of no-bells-and-whistles winemaking is scarce in this corner of Europe. In short, the grapes are gently crushed by foot and taken off their skins at between eight and 12 days to continue fermentation. “We don’t need to extract tannin,” says Peceric.

Another key to the style and quality here is that regulations allow for harvesting early for lower alcohol; minimum levels here are 12.5% for reds and 11.5% for whites (compared to 13.5% for reds and 13% for whites in the DOQ Priorat). This year’s Negre is a pure Garnacha, from mature vines sited around Capçanes. The 25-year-old (on average) bush vines sit at 350 metres on the mixed sandy clay soils (known locally as panal) with varied exposures.

A lovely mix of nectarines, apple danish and white button mushrooms pique the senses. With air whiffs of crushed rock and smoked meats appear. The core is awash with flavours of stone fruits and pomme fruits, earth and spice – layers build upon each other. This is a sophisticated and stylish chardonnay that doesn’t reveal its hand fully – it plays a cat-and-mouse game. Subtle oak spices remain deferential to the core of finely etched fruit. A fine framing tail of acidity and phenolics signs off. Very stylish indeed. GABRIELLE POY

Complex and highly lifted aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon and white nectarine combine with gun smoke and freshly grilled nuts. The palate is soft and full yet refined and complex, driven by fine acidity that flows into a creamy, velvety texture. The finish is round yet precise leaving a sensation that is long and moreish.
