This beer is something special.The first glass I poured for this review could have easily been mistaken for a glass of champagne had it not been poured into a pilsner glass.The beers colour is probably one of the lightest shades of yellow I have ever seen.It’s taste starts off bitter and dry and then transitions into a slightly fruity aftertaste.There isn’t much of a beer smell other than that given off by the hops.Peroni makes for an easy drinking beer.

ELM Bomba Rosso 2022Emerging winemaker Madeleine Marson has launched her first wines under the ELM label. ELM wines pay tribute to the upbringing Madeleine and her two sisters, Emily and Laura (together ELM), had in the Yarra Valley and Heathcote, where winemaking and the traditions of the Italian family table were strongly held. A long (official and unofficial) apprenticeship under the instruction of her father, Mario Marson, followed, and together they now run Vinea Marson in Heathcote. There, Madeleine got her hands on some parcels of fruit from Heathcote and the Alpine Valleys and crafted these playful takes on Italian family favourites.
ELM ‘Bomba Rosso’ takes an Australian approach to Friulian blends, with Heathcote Shiraz’s bright fruit concentration married with the enticing savouriness of Nebbiolo. A complex nose of red berries, blackcurrants, liquorice and dried herbs is followed by a rich and intense palate with dry and chewy tannins typical of the Nebbiolo variety.

Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.
Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.
While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.

Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Rose 2021 375mlNever judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? Domaine Pajot Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2022The Domaine itself is plonked on the hills overlooking Eauze the capital of Armagnac. Its certified organic and has eighty acres of vines that grow on the gentle hills of sand and fine silt soils. All harvests are done by hand and the domaine does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This is a dry and textural blend of Colombard, Ugni-Blanc, Sauvignon, and Gros-Manseng.
We were super impressed with the latest vintage here. Much more texture and weight then in previous vintage with an emphasis on phenolic grip and slippery fruit. There is lovely chalky, white pepper note on the nose with fresh nashi pear and green apple to the fore. Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2023Fontaleoni is a family estate run by brother and sister team, Matteo and Simona Troiani, with a little help from consultant Paolo Caciorgna. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer with particular emphasis on Vernaccia which, it has to be said, has been a revelation in the years since we first started seeing them in Australia.
Bright and somewhat crunchy with a direct line of fresh apple like acidity. Plenty to enjoy here with all the usual elements you would want from Vernaccia of this quality, apple fruit, lemon oil and white flowers along with just enough texture to provide a little tactile interest.
