Burgundy
The soils and vineyards of Burgundy have been very well defined thanks to the studious Monks a few hundred years ago - and the swathe of others who have picked up the baton since.
The Golden Slope (Cote D'or) is divided into two; the Cote du Nuit to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot noir dominates the Cote du Nuit as it loves the limestone nature of the soils and Chardonnay thrives in the heavier calcareous marl soils on the Cote de Beaune.
The essence of Burgundy comes down to the place where the vines are grown. The more definitive you can be (e.g. a single vineyard like Grand Cru or Premier Cru) then the higher the price you'll pay. A village wine, which will most likely be a blend of vineyards from within the village won't be as expensive as its origins are a little broader.
To the north, Chablis is an outpost. Lying closer to Champagne than the Cote d'Or, its marine fossil laden soils (Kimmeridgian clay) make scintillating renditions of chardonnay which age beautifully.
To the south the Cote Chalonnais, Maconnais and Beaujolais make wines that are easier on the pocket. There's some great value to be had here. A few different grapes are added to the mix including Gamay and Aligoté (as well as pinot noir and chardonnay).

Styles
The purity of chardonnay is on full display in a bottle of Chablis. Chiselled and tightly wound this is a crisp and salivating white. White Burgundy tends towards a riper heart but with spicy oak support.

Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. Its cushioned core offers just the right amount of flesh for a mid-weight style, a spine of savoury tannins corrals the flow of fruit nicely. Domaine Goisot Bourgogne Aligote 2022OUTSTANDING - A ripe yet very aligoté nose offers up mostly notes of citrus confit and spice. There is fine mid-palate density to the delicious and lightly stony flavors that deliver fine length on the bone-dry and highly refreshing finale. Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvee Reserve 2022From that mad-man Nicolas Potel this is no second thought, left-over grapes, I'll see what I can do, situation for his second label. After starting Domaine de Bellene in 2008, shortly after he launched the maison side working closely with the same growers and domains that Potel had built relationships with over the past 15 years, living and working in Beaune. Like his domaine, he chooses to focus on individual terroirs mainly from old vines (40 years old or older) only working with sites that are BIO certified or at the very least farmed according to the principles of lutte rasionee. This philosophy allows Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision at affordable prices.
The entry-level red Burgundy comes from vineyards in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The vines range in age from 30 to 80 years and are farmed sustainably. The major part of this wine is matured in barriques and the remainder is done in stainless steel. This maintains a pure style with bright fruit and a fine texture.
This looks great in 2022! A heady mix of red and black cherry, some ground sweet spice and bit of black pepper, savoury elements winking at you behind the plush fruit profile. Lovely drive of fruit that rushes your palate slowly fading away revealing a little savoury goodness in some darker spice and fresh crushed herb notes. Deep colour, a glossy purple. Ripe, plush and fruitful. Nice undertow of spice, but the array of dark fleshed fruit is what come across most prominently, it's well rounded and fulsome but the underpinned by fresh acidity and fine, sweet tannins. Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2022Attractively spicy aromas include those of green apple and plenty of citrus wisps. The racy, delicious, detailed and nicely textured flavors exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere, refreshing and inviting finish. Nathalie Theulot Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Blanc 2022Nathalie Theulot’s Côte Chalonnaise white is usually a domaine bottling drawn from vines in Mercurey. In 2022, hailstorms reduced yields by 60%, meaning this year’s wine includes a measure of purchased grapes. It’s a delicious, pulpy white that wafts from the glass with buttercup, fleshy stone fruit and citrus. The palate is attractively punchy and succulent, its’ satiny texture flecked with stone fruits, rock melon and sweet orange with a nip of reduction tying everything neatly together. Goisot Blanc Saint-Bris La Ronce Blanc 2019OUTSTANDING - Here too there is plenty of sauvignon blanc character to the ripe aromas of ocean breeze and lemongrass scents. The citrus character of the nose also appears on the sleek, intense and nicely saline-infused flavors that deliver very fine length on the balanced and dry finale. Slowly building a floral perfume in the flavour and holding that floral perfume the longest in the finish. Also chalky finishing but seemingly with even finer texture. Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Blanc 2020Here's a nicely composed white Burgundy from several parcels of 40 year old vines on average, with pretty meadow flower aromatics mingled with ripe citrus and white and yellow-fleshed orchard fruit. The palate is broad and ample without any heaviness and the depth of flavour and length are impressive indeed. This is a wine "toute en finesse" as they say, but also with power and palate presence. Gabin et Felix Richoux Irancy Veaupessiot 2018Thierry embraces each vintage for its uniqueness, which makes for a lot of diversity between years. Veaupessiot, like the other Irancy wines in the range, when first opened can hold its cards close to the chest—2010, 2013 and 2015 vintages are exceptions. Like a great Nebbiolo wine, the initial resistance begins to soften with time open and all its noble qualities begin to unfold from the glass. They are a rustic, clean style of wine that with patience shows an array of specific noble complexities unique to this place. Veaupessiot is the most elegant and brightly aromatic than the other lieux-dits bottlings, Les Cailles and La Palotte. Domaine de Bellene Beaune Blanches Fleurs 2021This comes from two plots have been part of the Domaine since 2006 and cover 38.51 ares. They were planted in 1971 on a quality rootstock, giving them late maturity. From Les Peuillets and Hauts Jarrons

Lovely aromas of raspberry and dark cherry fruit laid over a faintly stony backbeat and gorgeous blue florals of violets. Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Rouge Jean Ferte 1er 2022This is a relatively new wine to the Bellene releases and like the Francois Potel Homage wine, this is a blend of two sources, 1er Cru Haut Jarrons and 1er Cru Peuillets.
Perfumed cherry, drying petals, turned earth and limestone create the backdrop for a palate that is beautifully pure fruited and brimming with energy. Like many of the Bellene 2022s it has the combination of ripe fruit and then the driving limestone drying structure that ultimately gives this wine so much energy and lift. It finsihes with a lovely chewy tannin profile. I'd love to see this with some duck; lively "crunchy" character of the wine would be great with food. For the money, it's really smart Burgundy. Fabien Coche Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022Coming from 7 parcels of beautifully situated vines owned by the estate all within Meursault just below the village. This wine is whole bunch pressed then raised in a 3000 litre foudre before being moved back to stainless steel for 6 months in tank and bottled with no fining or filtration in January after a total of 16 months on lees. This is clearly not an average Bourgogne blanc with weight texture and character way above its humble appellation label. Domaine SC Guillard Gevrey Chambertin Reniard VV 2022Deep crimson, quite deep color. The nose is layered with berry fruit, raspberry, wild strawberry, cassis and briary fruit. There is lovely perfume lift and a purity of fruit, a good lick of new oak just appears, it is a super fresh and delineated wine. The palate is beautifully balanced and finely structured with spice, red berry loads of silky tannins and a long driven finish. The old vines providing depth and persistence. An enticing nose of maraschino cherries and freshly turned earth awaken the senses from the get-go. The palate is awash with sweet spices, cherries and forest floor flavours. Chewy tannins frame the bright and inner-lit core, creating a savoury tail on the finish.
