This steep vineyard is the cradle of the Soufrandière estate and one of the Mâcon's most significant sites. Ploughed mostly by horse and farmed biodynamically since 2001, it's a vineyard that produces the Bret brothers' most profound wines. Here, the Bajocian-era limestone soils are high in both calcium carbonate and quartz, and rich in iron (giving the rock an ochre tint). There is also some granitic influence.

SWEET SPOT, OUTSTANDING…painfully intense, super-sleek and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors that also flash plenty of minerality on the youthfully austere and very dry finale. This is also very promising and warmly recommended. BURGHOUND

The 2023 Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat Les Quarts has a delightful bouquet that has more charm than the Les Longeays cuvée: yellow fruit, hints of French patisserie, lemon verbena give way to crushed stone. This has very fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, vibrant and fresh with a touch of lemongrass on the finish. Just a bit more persistence here. NEAL MARTIN
