Rizzi Barbaresco Pajore 2013
DOZEN: $972.00 or $81.00 each
It's interesting, when I tasted these at the property earlier this year I preferred the Nervo on the day but made mention that it looked like the Pajore had more stuffing and substance but that it was a little withdrawn on the day and a bit harder to assess, however both wines were utterly gorgeous, impeccably crafted Barbaresco from a super vintage and some of the best vineyards in the area. Today though the promise of the Pajore is starting to really shine through, it still needs time in the bottle but there is absolutely no doubt that this has everything needed to one day become something majestic.
Dark cherries, incense, mint leaf, subtle spices are all apparent here. The nose is so enticing, if you could sit around and sniff this all day and you would find more subtle nuance and detail emerging with air and time, but you know I am going to drink mine well before that happens. While the wine is cool, refreshing and delicious there is a serious side to this as well, like a monster lurking in the depths of the impressive layers of fruit. It gives you the impression that with time this broodingly powerful wine will unleash its full potential and when that happens it will be quite something to behold. It will also be the moment you sit back in your chair swirling your glass with a big smile on your face and satisfied glint in your eyes. Right up until the point you realise that this cost so little and you didn't buy anywhere near enough of it when you had the chance and now it is all gone! My advice, don't let that happen to you, don't be that person, buy up big now and avoid the crushing realization that is inevitable if you miss this fleeting opportunity. This isn't a sales pitch it is life advice. ROSCOE
