  1. Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2020
    Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2020

Aromas of dog rose, wild herb, camphor and dark spice come together on the stunning 2020 Paolo Scavino Ravera. It's spicy and savory, delivering a core of raspberry compote accented by star anise, mocha and a hint of orange zest. Tightly woven, fine-grained tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2027-2032. (97) KERIN O'KEEFE

Vivid red with some garnet. Red cherry, blackberry and tar on the inviting nose. Fresh and lively on entry, then rather full-bodied and monolithic in the mouth, but light on its feet with more fruity oomph than the winery's more floral 2020 Monvigliero. Drinking window: 2030-2040. (95+) IAN D'AGATA

The 2020 Barolo Ravera is sleek, elegant and polished. It offers a captivating mix of the savory/mineral intensity of this site and the slightly smaller-scaled structure of the year. Black cherry, lavender, sage, coffee, mint and gravel abound. Elisa Scavino has done a terrific job softening the potent Ravera tannins. I can't wait to see how this ages. 2. Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2021
    Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2021

Vibrant and boasting great intensity, the compelling 2021 Monvigliero from Paolo Scavino mesmerizes with aromas of wild rose, menthol, blood orange and dark spice. Firm and elegantly structured, the delicious palate delivers crunchy red cherry, strawberry compote, pink peppercorn and licorice before a minty close. Close-grained tannins provide support. What a gorgeous wine. (98) KERIN OKEEFE

The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is a pretty dense wine. I don't see quite the delineation or nuance of the finest wines in this range or the best wines from this site, which leads me to believe Scavino is still getting a feel for Monvigliero. For many top producers, this would be a superb wine, but in this lineup, it's in the middle of the pack. Macerated cherry, spice, tobacco and cedar struggle to emerge fully. I hope to revisit the 2021 in a few years' time. (94) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

This has aromas of tar, violets, cherries, orange rind and a touch of aniseed. Medium- to full-bodied with a firm tannin structure that seems to recede toward the finish. The fruit is juicy, tender, pretty and refined. It should be more evident once the tannins mellow out. Exciting. Better from 2030 (96) ALDO FIORDELLI, Jamessuckling.com

  3. Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2021
    Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2021

Paolo Scavino has knocked the 2021 Barolo vintage out of the park and the firm's Ravera is another impressive showing. It opens with alluring aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit, iris, menthol and star anise while the delicious, full-bodied palate delivers succulent Marasca cherry, raspberry tart, licorice, cinnamon and crushed mint. Tightly woven, velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and together they give the wine a weightless concentration despite that belies its impressive structure. (98) KERIN OKEEFE

The 2021 Barolo Ravera is captures all the signatures of this site. Iron, white pepper, sage, mint, chalk and red-toned fruit all grace this sculpted, vibrant young Barolo. I especialy admire its energy and tension. Clean mineral notes support the bracing finish. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2021 for at least a few years.(95) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

A very floral wine with aromas of fresh roses, cherry stones, licorice and smoke. Very fresh on the palate, almost zesty, with a medium to full body, tight yet ripe tannins and an aftertaste of licorice and tobacco. (95) ALDO FIORDELLI, Jamessuckling.com
