Barolo 2021 Part One

The Mauro Veglio 2021 Gattera is another knock-out new release from this excellent estate. It opens with heady aromas of mature woodland berry, fragrant purple flower, exotic dark spice and a whiff of eucalyptus while the delicious, elegantly structured palate features ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, vanilla and licorice. Hailing from estate grapes in La Morra, it's a great expression of the site and of the vintage. (96) KERIN O'KEEFE

The 2021 Barolo Gattera is fabulous. Rich and ample in the glass, the Gattera marries the natural richness of this southeast-facing site with the greater transparency that is common in the Veglio Barolos today. The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Gattera comes from a site in La Morra, and you taste the softness and the delicate nature of this site. This village tends to make the silkiest and sometimes the most accessible expressions of Barolo. This balanced vintage shows pretty floral and fruit nuances and a hint of dusty limestone. Aromas recalling ripe forest berry, eucalyptus and dark culinary spice mingle with a whiff of botanical herb on the fantastic 2021 Castelletto from Mauro Veglio. Elegantly structured and linear, the palate has nervous tension that underscores red cherry, cranberry, licorice and ground clove. Taut, refined tannins provide support. The 2021 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most potent of these wines. It exudes tons of textural depth and overall intensity. Dark cherry, red plum, blood orange, spice and rose petal saturate the palate. All the 2021 needs is a bit of time to shed some of its baby fat. Today the aromatics are especially alluring. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin round out a super-classic expression of Monforte's Castelletto district. ANTONIO GALLONI

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Castelletto (with 6,500 bottles created) reveals power and important richness that is noticed in the wine's darker appearance. Blackcurrant and cherry are framed by licorice, tar and rusty nail. The Castelletto performs very nicely in 2021, showing balance, precision and power. On the elegant, almost ethereal but full-bodied palate, taut, graceful tannins accompany layers of succulent red cherry, raspberry, star anise and white pepper before closing on a note of crushed mint. The 2021 Barolo Arborina is a gorgeous, deep wine endowed with serious textural depth and intensity. Dark red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal fill out the layers. There's gorgeous palate presence and tons of class here. The tannins, often a challenge in this site, are refined and very nicely balanced. ANTONIO GALLONI

The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Arborina stands apart for its special bouquet that features a hint of chamomile tea or wild nettle layered in with the dark fruit and earthy aromas of this important vineyard. The Veglio family has three hectares in this MGA site, but fruit for this wine comes from one hectare with vines 35 years old and older. Grapes that are not used for this wine go to the Barolo.
