The compelling 2020 Monvigliero from Paolo Scavino has intense aromas recalling blue flower, ripe berry, dried mint and new leather. Full-bodied and enveloping, it shows structure, concentration and elegance in the form of fleshy cherry, crushed strawberry, blood orange and licorice before closing on a mentholated note. Velvety tannins provide taut support and texture. It's utterly delicious. Drink 2028-2038. (97) KERIN O'KEEFE
Hints of varnish and rose are complemented by violet and sour red cherry on this Barolo's typically perfumed, almost aromatic nose. Then light on its feet and easygoing (just as you'd expect a Monvigliero Barolo to be), this is at once elegant yet powerful and lingers nicely on the floral and herbal palate. A whiplash of minerality on the back end adds interest. I remember this wine well for twenty years ago Monvigliero wasn't a cru as highly thought of as it is today: back then, only GB Burlotto was making a really noteworthy wine from the site, and all the Barolo producers I talked to about Monvigliero always said the same thing. And that was that Burlotto's Monvigliero success was due to the winery's talented technical director (Fabio Alessandria) and his vinification tactics (ie. use of whole bunches). But I knew well that at Paolo Scavino, their Monvigliero Barolo was already mesmerizingly good in its very first vintage; and so, to my way of thinking, it clearly showed that there was a lot more to Monvigliero than only one man's talent levels, and the rest is history. Drinking window: 2030-2040. (95) IAN D'AGATA
Coming from an esteemed site in Verduno, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a dark ruby hue and opens to notes of ripe black raspberries, grenadine, candied roses, sweet soil, and fresh sage. Medium-bodied, it’s rounded and approachable up front before revealing ripe tannins and a savory saline finish with notes of fresh orange. It is another impressive and highly refined wine from the Scavino family to drink over the coming 15-20 years. AUDREY FICK, JebDunnuck.com.au
