Crushed mint, dried rosemary, blue flower and woodland berry aromas come to the forefront on the gorgeous 2020 Paiagallo from Mauro Veglio. On the full-bodied palate, notes of star anise, coconut and coffee bean accent a juicy red cherry core. Drink 2028–2035. KERIN O’KEEFE
Veglio's Paiagallo is from a single 30hl botte grande, where the wine ages for 24 months. It's very classic on the nose, with dried cherry, liquorice stick, intense Parma violet, cherry kernel and rhubarb. Firm on the palate, it shows very elegant tannins and a velvety texture, with lifted acidity and great red fruited length. A sleek Barolo, more elegant than powerful but no less cellarworthy. Dark and evocative, the 2020 offers up a complex mélange of savory herbs, blood orange, balsamic-infused fruit, spice and new leather. This beguiling, nuanced Barolo hits all the right notes.
