Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo DOCG 2020Out of all the brilliant Rizzi range of Barbaresco, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nervo bottling. It doesn't carry the gravitas of their Pajore plot but I love the understatement in the wine with its lilting and delicate aromatics and fine, detailed palate. Pure, with a lovely austerity on the back end.
In 2020, it strikes me as just a touch more open so the red fruits and bruised strawberry jump up a little more than usual, and the dusting of spice, red petals, dried mint and cut hay aromatics are beautifully accessible. So much so, it's hard to draw yourself away to actually drink the thing. But, when you do the just-right-ripeness gives you fruit that ranges from raspberry to cranberry all draped in complexing brown spice. The structure is there but like all Nervos, it's fine and ever so long giving the balancing austerity of powdery tanins to the effusiveness of the fruit. I love it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

The 2020 Barolo Parussi is a classy, nuanced wine. It shows lovely textural depth and resonance, but in the mid-weight style of the year. Dark red cherry, lavender, rose petal, mint and spice all build nicely, filling out the layers effortlessly. The 2020 is weightless and elegant, with the understated textural depth that is such a signature of this vintage. Organic. Lalù farms just 0.5 hectares in one of Monforte’s great Crus, Le Coste di Monforte. With an average altitude of 420 metres, this south-facing vineyard is the highest and southernmost vineyard in Monforte. The site perfectly fits Lalù’s preference for finesse and openness. Although its 35-year-old vines lie parallel to the Ginestra and Mosconi Crus, Barolo from this vineyard is typically prettier and rounder than its neighbours—this being attributed to the unusually high content of sand layered throughout the region’s Sant’Agata marls.This year, the Barolo was mostly destemmed and fermented in a tronconique oak vat. It spent one month on skins, including just over two weeks with the cap submerged in the juice. Aging was in large oak vats (from Austria and Alto Adige) for two years before eight months in concrete.This release is only Lalù’s second Barolo and explains why there is already so much excitement surrounding this producer.

Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2020The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. A ripe ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is incredible on the nose. Initially lightly smoky on opening, it needs a little time to reveal notes of candied roses, wild raspberries, tea leaf, and sweet sage. Medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, a balanced, compact nature, and a velvety texture, it is nicely concentrated, yet with a weightless feel. This is one of the most complete wines I've tasted from Vjara to date. It has depth, but with a defined feel, and is long on the palate, with an exceptional finish.
